But something had changed. Prince believed that he had experienced a spiritual and moral epiphany, and that Chavez, serving as a guide, had shown him the way to greater connection with God and other people. The Black Album, he decided, represented the anger and licentiousness that he must leave behind. After casting about for months for a way to truly put the Revolution era behind him, he had found one.

Neither did I, but I did once I read the lyrics.
Lovesexy... the feeling you get when you are falling in love, not with a boy or a girl, but with the heavens above.
Simply put: Lovesexy is a feeling.
The feeling of falling in love with God.

On Second Thought Prince - LoveSexy
or better or worse, we here at Stylus, in all of our autocratic consumer-crit greed, are slaves to timeliness. A record over six months old is often discarded, deemed too old for publication, a relic in the internet age. That's why each week at Stylus, one writer takes a look at an album with the benefit of time. Whether it has been unjustly ignored, unfairly lauded, or misunderstood in some fundamental way, we aim with On Second Thought to provide a fresh look at albums that need it.
...
LoveSexy is sublime—a work of utter beauty—Prince’s most distinct and fluid statement. The fact that the CD has the album all on one track is frustrating at times, but one has to get a kick out of Prince’s sentiment: This was the closest the Purple One ever came to a concept album and he was clearly passionate about listeners taking it in as one giant whole. As opposed to the style hopping of Sign Of The Times or the simply down-&-dirty funk of The Black Album, LoveSexy can only be described as LoveSexy. It’s LoveSexy music; Prince music in the purest and least compromising sense. It’s pretty funky—and sexy—but it’s also rocking and spiritual—spiritual in the best way possible: euphoric not pious. Prince proved himself a master of the beat and hook on previous albums, but here he reaches another level by enriching his grooves with stronger and more intricate harmonies. More than any other Prince album, LoveSexy is a vocal playground and there’s true joy in the singing. For an artist who had already broken many clichés, LoveSexy was the consummation of everything Prince was suggesting in the 1980s. Yes—it’s indulgent, but never in a boring or contrived manner; it’s always engaging; always honest. I could get on the traditional tip and attempt to describe each track, but hey—there’s only one track! One track. One LoveSexy. One Prince. And this is his Number One album in my book.

I was scared of the idea back then of Prince being 'born again' I didn't know what that meant still feeling the Purple Rain 2 Wearing Something Peach Prince
I loved getting lost in the sound of the album and I think I got it, still can't put it in words, but it felt like Purple Rain & Parade, just that whole previous periods feeling and I got it.

Prince's resurrection BY DAVID WILD
"I DIG YOU, and you dig me," Prince told a cheering crowd of 17,000 Parisians at the Palais Omnisport Bercy toward the end of one of the extraordinary shows that opened his Lovesexy '88 Tour. "And together we'll dig him to death. Thank you, Jesus." Pointing his guitar meaningfully toward the heavens, or at least toward the painted clouds that hung overhead, Prince then ripped into "Purple Rain," offering one of his most divinely inspired solos of the evening.
As the shows went on, Prince became increasingly direct about his intentions. "The first half, I gave it to you because you were expecting it," he said during the third night in Paris. "The second half is what it's all about. It's about how we all dig each other and him."

I thought back then that this album was way spiritual, and with the cover not something U wanted your prude parents to see. Prince I will always miss and love U.

The album was disturbing. I got rid if my copy, but had to go buy another after trying to stay away. It's kind of silly now, but at the time it shook my understanding of God & spirituality. I didn't feel that spooked by the Black Album when I eventually heard it. I felt like it was saying that sex could lead to damnation or losing one's soul. I had a similiar reaction to Shockadelica, and maybe Scarlet Pussy. Scary stuff to a 19yr old. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

Bought a different pair of headphones 2XL and I set up a Lovesexy playlist the music is hitting hard, some very good sounds swirling around in your head
No Escape (B side) Glam Slam Anna Stesia Dance On Lovesexy the Line (outtake) When 2 R in Love Pink Cashmere * Scarlet Pussy (extended B side) I Wish U Heaven God is Alive (outtake) Positivity Still Would Stand All Time (outtake) We Got the Power (outtake) Girl Power (outtake featuring Sheila E)
4 a minute I felt Scarlet Pussy sounded like something from SOTT era. But then I rethought it and felt La La La He He Hee sounds like something that could go with Scarlet Pussy and mesh well with Lovesexy music.
I need to mix in some Madhouse 16 now to get the full feel
some considerations: R U Legal Yet? Dance With the Devil, Electic Chair, the Future

Although not 1 of my favorites. I love the positivity of this album. I love the over the top style, that also came w/ it. It was almost an introduction to a side of Prince, I'd never seen before.
I still cant believe ppl were shocked by the album cover. Prince has done so many wild, and well sexually driven things. that you would think this wouldnt even be a BIG deal. I dont think this was sexually driven though, i think he just wanted to be open.
btw he has pretty hand writing

My favourite prince album. I wouldnt change a single note. I know a few people think the album is overproduced but it sounds perfect. such a great headphones album i listen to this one more than any of his other work Still collecting that vinyl

Yeah, the cover is actually not shocking. There's nothing sexual about the picture. It's a naked man....that's it.
Maybe it's a US thing. Lovesexy was very big in Holland and I can't remember anybody saying somthing negative about the cover.

Cause LOVESEXY IS THE ONE!!!! Till my day is done Hundalasiliah!!!!! smile It took me a while to realize this, but Lovesexy just defines why I'm a Prince fan. For someone to make such an album that makes no sense, yet comes together, is just Glam Slam!!!
I love the fashion!
This era is my favorite, because I don't know how it manages to make Prince 'Horny' for the heavens above, but it succeds. The 'Spooky Electric' makes the whole show dive into pure lust. IN LUST you will suffer, but in LOVE you will grow! It's so beautiful and strong. It leaves me feeling positive. EVERYtime I listen to it, I am assured HEAVEN, PEACE, AND POSITIVITY!
It's GLAM SLAM! I can't stop saying... kNOw! [Edited 2/29/12 20:31pm] It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I don't see it as 'born again'. I don't think that's what it's about either. LoveSexy is Prince's gospel album. it's all about the love for God he feels and wants to share with everybody.
It was the album that made me a fan too. Never cared much for Prince before, but this one settled it.

at the time that is the phrase I was hearing a lot about Prince from media, so the term was confusing to me. the Black Album was his Funk Bible and Lovesexy was his Gospel

Lovesexy remains a favorite among die hard fans. it is in my eyes his most personal and spiritual releases till this date. I used to spend my whole work day bumpin this album on repeat.
But in the eyes of popular culture at that time it was Prince's lowest selling album up to that date since his first release "For you". it only sold 175,000 units
many things could have hindered its markebility:
* releasing it as only 1 continuous track so the listener could hear the album as a whole entity. but this basicaly alienated the casual listener.
* Not initially putting out any promos or videos for the album just to create a air of mystery.
* not touring the USA first which would have boosted the sales at home
* The album cover brought controversy and forced some stores to hide it behind the counter or not carry it at all.
some people say this is the turning point for prince which started a decline in his artistic output. but i greatly disagree. Lovesexy is a testament to Prince's most truthfull and honest release. Annastesia is one of my fav songs ever. alphabet st. is a for sure classis. dance on is a great follow up to sign o the times. all and all who really cares about what the "market" has to say or has not to say about this album. true Prince fans indeed know how trully artistic and eye opening LOVESEXY really is.
