Prince Original Album Series

Just seen on HMV with a 12 of March release date from Rhino

5 disc set...so is it the first 5 albums, are they re-mastered or possible the first 3 with out-takes.

Anybody know?

here's the HMV link

Nothing to get excited about, I have a couple of these "Original Album Series Box Sets" by Rhino.

It's jsut standard albums in shit cheap cardboard sleeves which are housed in an outer card box. Cheap and shite.

Good for someone on a budget but certainly not the proper remasters with extra tracks you hope they are.

I was unimpressed with the two I have. They were not remasters.

I think if these were remastered in any way it would have said so in HMV's link. Just checked on Rhino's site and they have no mention of it at all yet.

Also, i'm not being funny but I think 5 remastered Prince albums would cost a little more tahn £12.

These collections are good for what they are, but if it's a quality product your after then I would avoid them.

Just my opinion of course. wink

If they do turn out to be remasters then i'll be really disappointed that they were packed and thrown together in such a cheap manner.

Shit, I wouldn't care if they came in a paper bad just as long as they were remastered.

lol

I'm quite sure that these are just a good way for people to obtain 5 classic albums for the price of one.

I could be wrong though, I often am.

I've bought similar sets put out for Bootsy Collins and Sly Stone. As The Digital Gardener says, the CDs in these sets are the same as what was available before, but the packaging is bare-bones cheap. Which would suggest we're just getting the same CDs in cheap packaging.

On the other hand, the vinyl remasters of Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999 were released by Rhino with zero promotion of the fact that they were remastered. I had to email Bernie Grundman Mastering myself to get confirmation of that. The information that was out there was inaccurate as it stated that the remasters were not done by Bernie himself (as was the case) but by someone else working for him. So, giving us Prince remastered CDs in this odd way would be consistent with Rhino's past zero promotion strategy.

I'm with rdhull on the paper bag packaging. As long as they aren't too scratched to play. lol

I googled it, and this site came up with a tracklist. Not sure if it's accurate or not..

http://www.grooves-inc.co...01005.html

It says the 5 albums are: 1999 - Purple Rain - Parade - Lovesexy - Diamonds and Pearls . It lists no bonus tracks. It says nothing about whether or not they're remastered. It does, however, have the tracks ordered incorrectly on each album.

It contains audio samples of each track.. I'm not sure if that would be a way to tell if they're remastered or not.

What an odd choice of albums. I guess SOTT didn't make the cut because it's two discs? Looks like something thrown together by a marketing person who was randomly given this assignment and has no knowledge of the history here. Maybe there's a chance that these will turn out to be remastered by mistake.

The Original Album Classics series features what has already been available and as someone has noted, in minimal (=cheap) packaging. Oftentimes, the albums are remasterd with bonus tracks, but just as often they are not. Since Prince'salbums haven't been reastered, guaranteed it's the same old ones repackaged.

As for why those particular titles...from other artist's sets, it seems this series tries to present a cross section (combiniing some essential or very popular with other lesser known works) of a artist's catalogue, not necessarily the definitive, or even consecutively released ones.

I actually like those two songs myself, but there are other fish to fry.

Namely: SOTT, Dirty Mind, or Controversy.

Plus I think all the post 1990 cd's are ok in the remastering/sound already.

This is supposed to go on sale March 20. Does anyone have an update? Are the discs the same old versions as we've suspected?

If they aren't remastered and do not have any extra's then there's nothing to see or hear.
Please go on...

True indeed udo but, I still want em to add to the memorabilia I have. Would be mad cool if they were re-masters ...
