What's next for P..?

Hey y'all,

Just wanted to garner your ideas on what you think P's next move's gonna be. He seems to be the Midas man right now with how he's moulded his career and his ability to keep himself fresh and exciting as a performer. There really seems to be no limits to him as an artist and performer. So what do you do once you've done it all? He's mastered most music genres, performed extensively throughout the world, managed to beat the labels and not be edited by them anymore. Is there anything else he hasn't done? What new frontiers await him? There seems to be no end to this man's power and success. It's almost as if he knows something the rest of us don't (maybe he does). Anyhow, what do y'all think about this? Where do you go as an artist/musician when your in Prince's position..Thoughts?

For most artists reaching this stage in their career, the only thing left is 'best of' collections and a greatest hits tour. But I'd be very disappointed in Prince if he goes down this road.

What he should do is try recapture the essence of a Sign o The Times/Purple Rain, find a big enough label and release it to the mainstream. There is still an audience for good music if it's marketed well enough. He just needs to swallow his pride and admit that these independantly released albums like 20Ten & Lotusflow3r might be good enough for some of the faithful, but if he wants to get his point about real music by real musicians across then he needs a way of promoting it, and free giveaways with newspapers/magazines aint good enough.

Or he could just release a best of album that nobody will buy...

I think Prince has been on auto-pilot a little bit these past few years. Personally, I'd like to see him collaborate with some other people and not just keep it to young and new female performers or someone safe like Chaka or Lenny or Larry. I don't know maybe a rocker like Bruce Springsteen. Most importantly, I'd also like to see remasters like what U2 has done with their albums or what Island Records did with Bob Marley's albums - they remastered the albums but added a second disc of era-related material, either live or studio stuff. I like the idea of an acoustic tour too. I think there are things we will always get from Prince: a new album, a new tour, protégées, etc. Prince's career is far from over and I'd never say no to a new album however. I just don't want everything to so safe and predictable.

I agree except for the play it safe predicatble elements. Not coming from you but the the general consensus of web fans for the last ten years or so.

I dont think we see him actually playing it safe with specific songs and releases.

LF had several different types of songs (Wall Of Berline etc) seems like something left field for him. Doing shows with deep cuts songs theme nights etc etc

PE title track is a grand effort, Guitar an electric stomp, SHOE an attempt at Damn You elegance but less 'forced'

The Rainbow Children album and tour was inspired as hell imo.

The one off songs even though crticized as terrible: Rich Friends, Purple n Gold..he attempted a traditional old school fight song, F.U.N.K. was as god as anything on The Black Album imo....

not to mention the club song releases such as C-Invasion, Piano album, NEWS etc...

I think overall Prince gets a bad rap in the play it safe determination.

I would like to add however....that as long as Warners has some kind of say over Prince's albums, I seriously doubt we will ever see any remasters.

I wouldn't disagree with you there, RD. I loved LF and PE and TRC - oh goodness that album is brilliant! I know I can't expect Prince to be unpredictable all the time but I suppose, for example, take his recent tours. Do we really need to hear those same songs? He's been doing them for a several years now. The 2009 Montreaux shows are what I guess I'd like to see more of. I mean....this is Prince for god's sake. Sure he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone, but like those 2009 shows demonstrated, he switched it up a bit and flexed some other muscles we may not see regularly.

I have no idea, no one has, as always. The only certainty is that an Allo/Prince collab is in the works, but that doesn't mean it'll be released.

There'll obviously be more touring, since Prince always tour anyway, and hopefully he will put an end to his "strike" and release his next album in 2012, as well as Andy's.

As for remasters and stuff, it's probably not for 2012, with WB still being in the mix. 2014 maybe, if Prince gets his first masters back in 2013?

One interesting thought is that George Clinton's 2 Paisley Park albums are still unre-released, the only Clinton albums still out of print by now I believe. IIRC, Clinton has been known to fight for his masters, and we now know that Prince (not WB) has the rights to these albums. I wonder whether Clinton just doesn't care or if he allowed Prince to retain the albums without fighting for them, against the promise that they'll be reissued later, alongside the remasters and most of Paisley Park's back catalogue, with the hope that the whole thing would create a buzz big enough to make these record sell better than they would if re-released on their own right now.
