ok, so a copy of something called 'work it 2.0' fell into my lap not long ago...

my question to all of you is this:

how the heck does 34 cds of rare and unreleased material leak out of 'the vault' and into the world?

maybe no one will know for sure, but i am up to hear your theories and speculation.

i've been plowing through this material and a few things stand out about it:

1-there are hundreds of songs (647 to be exact. about 40 hours of it.)

2-the fidelity of most of them is quite good

3-some of this stuff is wicked good (the irony isn't lost on me that it betters a lot of the officially released materials)

4-some of it has never been out in any form ever

for someone who is a known control freak, it seems odd that this much would seep out like it has.

did prince work in the studio for 3 days in a row, pass out under the mixing desk and forget to lock the vault's back door?

and finally, if there's 34 cds worth here, how much more is there in the vault that isn't in this set or hasn't been accounted for. it does truly boggle the mind!!

This is from the wiki article for bootleg recording

Many bootlegs consist of private or professional studio recordings distributed without the artist's involvement, including demos, works-in-progress or discarded material. These might be made from private recordings not meant to be widely shared, or from master recordings stolen or copied from an artist's home, a recording studio or the offices of a record label. A number of bootlegs originated with FM radio broadcasts of live or previously recorded live performances.

I think this covers most of the material we have from Prince. He has obviously tightened the control over what he produces in his studio now because there has been virtually no 'new' studio material leaked for a long time now.

Ignoring (with difficulty) rdhull's obsession with with the Prince+JB+MJ performance biggrin , Prince passed a lot of cassettes around to friends and other musicians. Bobby Z. sold a bunch of tapes (like the Rebels sessions for example, and others) to American tape traders using money from Per Nilsen and other Dutch fans for a great deal of money. It mostly comes from people within Prince's bands/organization that were paid by people that wanted it and then circulated through the tape trading community.

that gives me some insights into it. that was pretty much what i figured, but i was hoping there'd be some crazy wild stories of men with trucks full of loads and loads of stolen tapes and a big purple car chase and all of that! LOL

it's funny, that sort of cycle doesn't really exist like it used to. now, in the digital age, everyone is used to getting cool stuff for free, so no one wants to pay for it anymore. at least not like in the 80s and 90s. so that means if no one is wanting to pay, the bootleggers who have this material have no motivation to let it out into the world since they don't want the risk with no reward. back in the day you'd buy a boot on vinyl or cd and the money would go back to the bootleggers to cover the costs of sourcing the materials and pressing it up.

i think if you consider that so much of this stuff is old material, it's been paid for many times over and now it's trickled down to be free. so whoever had/sold the tapes to begin with got the $$$ and they don't care. nowadays, who is going to fork over 2000 dollars for a tape that they have virtually no hope of making their money back on.

and i actually dig that video of p, mj and jb. it's great!

i hear that! how the heck do you wrap your head around 647 songs, let alone outtakes, demos and variations of songs you know and love...some of these have 3-4 versions of the songs. so you can see how it progresses as he re-records or adds parts to it.

i think this set and a copy of the vault book could make for a great few weeks of very intensive study!!

Try $10,000 (that's what was paid for The Rebels and some other early demos to Bobby Z.) It's not always bootleggers trying to make money on their investment, though. Just being able to hear that stuff was THAT valuable to certain people back then. Nowadays: You're right. The google search has replaced the journey.

If you're trying to imply that Prince is behind this you're DEAD WRONG.

These tracks come from people working around Prince at the time: musicians, associates, record companies executives, engineers, management teams, friends and girlfriends, all kind of people who were most often GIVEN tapes for personal use by Prince with the instruction of keeping the tapes private, and possibly a few who stole them here and there. Then Prince got aware of the leaks and it pissed him off and he tightened his security and stopped giving tapes to anyone and that's how and why we don't have a single post-1995 outtake circulating.

These tracks come from people working around Prince at the time: musicians, associates, record companies executives, engineers, management teams, friends and girlfriends, all kind of people who were most often GIVEN tapes for personal use by Prince with the instruction of keeping the tapes private, and possibly a few who stole them here and there. Then Prince got aware of the leaks and it pissed him off and he tightened his security and stopped giving tapes to anyone and that's how and why we don't have a single post-1995 outtake circulating.

if you read my original post, there's no implication by me that prince is behind it.

i know enough about prince to know that he wasn't. i only imagined a scenario where he fell asleep and people stole the music from him. which it seems is pretty much what happened. not literally, but for sure figuratively.
