Hypothetically Speaking.... O)+>

Have you noticed that Michael Jackson's fanbase quadrupled after his death?

Some of my friends who didn't even know who Michael Jackson was before he died (I'm only 16), magically became his 'biggest fan' right after the fact.

Let's say that Prince dies. Will his death have the same type of reaction, especially from the younger generation?

The reason I ask is because when I was younger, Michael Jackson was going through his 'trial'. Everyone that was my age kind of made fun of him and his younger fans and whatnot.

I don't think it will be as big when Prince passes. I really hope it will but Prince isn't as comercial a force that MJ was. Based upon what happened with Michael, I say that there will be an increase in hit albums like 1999 and Purple Rain. Probably more iTunes downloads... A book or so. But being that he isnt as comercial... I dont see as many younger people who weren't already fans freaking like they did 4 MJ. Of course, the real fans like everyone on tthis site will freak. Warners may rerelease Purple Rain memorabilia/ the film/ the remastered album. Don't mean 2 be a downer but.... Let's hope the purple yoda won't see the other side 4 a very long time.

Well, I kinda agree, everyone became ''fan''..... most of those people(yes, people I know...) aren't even fan anymore and were fan for like less than 1 year or 1,5 year....

I don't think exactly the same will happen with Prince, but I do think he'll gain a lot of fans...

It happens a lot with artists, even with Amy Winehouse, not as much, but sure a lot .....

This happens with anyone who dies.

No doubt HMV shoved a shelf-full of Etta James best of's to the front of the shop at the weekend, and the record labels are scrabbling to repackage their old ones and ship them out as quickly as they can.

I don't want him to die. He has years of happiness ahead of him, and he can easily keep recording material for 30 more years if he stays in good health. 30 more years of Prince stuff PLUS everything that's already been recorded? I'm in! biggrin

As for the OP's question: he will get more iconic but nothing like MJ. MJ was THE biggest pop-star of all time. Bigger than Elvis (because Elvis was mostly an American phenomenon) and The Beatles (because their career didn't last that long). Prince is among the greatest, but nothing as universal as MJ.

No I didn't notice that, what I did notice was that after his death this place quickly filled up with teeny MJ fans looking for a new favourite pop star.

Prince did "die" in 1993, replaced by prince. It didn't do miracles for his career.

Morbid and awful thread. Anyone who has experienced death close to them would never create such a ridiculous and pointless topic.

I think once Prince dies (Jehovah forbid) everyone will begin to appreciate what a true musician he was.
With MJ I LOVED all his music but wasn't overly obsessed in it like I am with Prince - but once he passed away I felt sad that I didn't appreciate him enough while he was alive.
I guess in a way I never really thought that I'd see MJ as an old bald man with Alzheimer's, I kinda knew he would pass away while he was still young. Prince on the other hand: I can see him still being funky & wearing cool outfits & jamming well into his 80's.
pray Peace in the House of Prince.

Okay i was a big MJ fan from the time I was 9 up until the year he died. I had zero intention of jumping to being a Prince fan just because he was there. It just happned one day. Yeah... after the buzz around him died off (no pun intended) that left room for me to engage my time in Prince music (and affairs lol ) and see him as a awesome musican he is today! Anyways, I see Prince living for a very long time, because he's so happy doing what he loves and I can tell touched If he had a life like MJ, he probably wouldn't be in top shape like he is today. I see a lot of Prince in the future. smile

My answer to the question of the thread is No..not to the magnitude of Mj's passing. But I know some ignorant people will be like "Didn't he already die?"

It is funny.... he was pretty much a joke. If you were going to rock some MJ at a party, it was probably from "Off the Wall" or Jackson 5.

Then the day he dies, people you didn't even know had a record player are posting "CRYING SO HARD RIGHT NOW!" as their Facebook status...and now, every house party I attend, I go in fear of the inevitable Thriller dance party that might break out.

And I know there were always those who stood outside the hotel or court house crying for a glimpse, but the message board cult is some whole other other thing. When Prince dies, people will be sad, but none of this will go on.
