The Beautiful Experience - a little appreciation thread

I've just been watching this again... such fun, such a return to form... It's obvious from this video that there is massive discontent within Prince and it is driving his performance, the staging at Paisley Park, etc.... This was such a fun time to be a Prince fan, musically.

Now and Days of Wild are just sublime... but, for me, the tracks that really stand out are Come - the bassy, seductive version - and Race... such a fantastic version of the song and a tremendous video, too. Possibly, if ever properly released, would have to be up there with the best Prince videos ever.

And then, there's the bootleg that goes with it... It sounds like Prince is having a blast "I just wanted to see if it worked..." Brilliant.

Can we show some love for this show... as close as I'll ever get to a Paisley Park Party! smile

Yes I like it.

I prefer the audio boot over the video, but both are fun. The video suffers (imo) from the silly story clips with Nona Gaye, I think it would have been a whole lot more enjoyable if it were just the whole gig with no interruptions. The video clips are ok, but again just the gig and nothing else would have been great because it was a killer show.

I attended the show for $100.00 and the night was epic! Much of the lower level of Paisley Park was open to view, most notably the studios. I had been in Paisley Park before for after parties and private concerts, but nothing like this.

Prior to the actual concert Eric Leeds played in a rehearsal area off the atrium where they had some tables set up, like a little jazz club. Jacob Armin was in the band. This was the same room where the "infamous" Terence Trent D'Arby incident took place.

They had a "gift shop" set up in the lobby and were selling The Most Beautiful Girl In The World single, as is was yet unreleased.

A press table was also set up in the lobby, as there were a lot of celebrities in attendance due to the fact that the NBA All Star game was the same weekend.

Also prior to the concert they did a fashion show to the Come version shown in the Beautiful Experience video. They then introduced the girls who won the Most Beautiful Girl In The World contest and then proceeded to show the video for the first time. Mayte and Jamie King also did their routine to Pheromone.

After that an announcer introduced Tony Mosley and crew and they came onto the stage and "rapped" a song, don't know what it was or haven't heard it since. Obviously the low point of the evening! lol

Lastly, Prince and the NPG came on stage. At the time the band were being billed as something else, but I can't remember what the name was (10,000 maybe?). It ended up being the same line up. Not sure what that was all about. The rest is documented on several boots. After the show was over, so was the event. Michael Bland handed me one of his drumsticks.

About a month later they showed the clips of The Jam and Shhh at Glam Slam. I was so excited to see myself front and center in the videos. In April they premiered the Beautiful Experience film. I was a little disappointed with that, as a lot of the concert was cut and videos from Come were mixed in. Although, it was nice to have a live document of something I had went to.

i remember turning up at work one day and my boss giving me a tape of this recorded from sky one the night before. i didn't even know it was on. that was the problem before the internet

so i took it home and was blown away by an hour or so of pretty much all brand new unheard of music with videos to go with it, and such fucking fantastic tracks. even to date the live show dat soundboard bootleg is one of his best and one of my favourites

it's just a shame stuff like that never got an official release in any shape or form apart from the vhs copies sold online that were taken from an actual tv broadcast

it's stuff like that and ryde dyvine and the love4oneanother special that should have got an official dvd

Some may find the storyline a bit silly but I kind of liked it because it was, considering that this was shot in 1994, very futuristic and gave us a hint of things to come (internet addiction, not going out, loneliness, virtual reality, downloads, online concerts etc.). I rarely see people complain about the Sign of the Times movie "storyline" lol ...and keep in mind, the Beautiful Experience, unlike the SOTT movie, used real live footage.

It is a very underrated project and his following film projects, like the Love 4 One Another special, never really came close to this one in terms of raw energy, delivery and passion. He was surely on fire and the whole film has aged very well, IMO.

I would have liked to see some more real concert footage but that probably would´ve meant no videoclips, and I happen to like the whole concept of live footage with some clips mixed in.

Nona´s moaning is a bit distracting during Shhh... but other than that, this is an almost flawless project. Prince should´ve released much more material in this vein and of this calibre instead of releasing weaker stuff like Graffiti Bridge, The ONA Aladdin (Las Vegas) DVD etc.

This one, the Undertaker, SOTT and the Lovesexy live VHS are true gems and showcase his talent much better than some of his vanity projects.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Totally agree. May be because the Beautiful Experience was a concert (the live portions) and Love 4 One Another were individual songs pieced together from a few different tapings out at Paisley Park. Also by Prince standards the songs were almost a year old...if you get my drift.

Yes it was part of that classic 1993-1994 period that almost rivaled the late 80s for all the great music prince put out.

That stuff looks totally amazing!! I'm so jealous, uughh why was I always there at the wrong time?! My friend & I went 2 mpls March 1994 & just missed the Beautiful Experience being filmed a few weeks before. Then I heard Prince was at Glam Slam on Easter Sunday 3rd April 4 an over 18s BE party & we were damn well stuck up in Duluth! It was absolute torture knowing prince was at Glam Slam! Then of course we then left 4 home a few days before the 17th Beautiful Experience party at Glam Slam. Just wasn't meant 2 b! We promised 2 come back 2 Minneapolis 4 our 21st birthdays but life over took & our dreams got suspended in time.....almost but not quite! wink

Prince did a show at Glam Slam in Jan 92, basically a preview for the Diamonds and Pearls tour. Afterwards there was an after party at Paisley Park and Terence Trent D'Arby was there. Eventually everyone was moved into the rehearsal area from the atrium and they did a jam session. At one point Terence Trent D'Arby got onstage and picked up a guitar and started strumming and Prince just looked at him like...confused ...he then walked off the stage with his tail between his legs.

March, huh? Hope it wasn't the first week in March, because he did another show out at Paisley Park that week. Pretty much a repeat of the Feb 12 show. He would go to Glam Slam all the time, usually every Wednesday and Saturday, with afterparties to follow either at Glam Slam's Erotic City room or out at Paisley Park. He also did several shows in April and May of that year at Glam Slam. Great time to be around!

Fantastic memories. I simply remember ma and a mate of mine being blown away by this music and performance; especially after the lacklustre Graffiti Bridge, the overblown D&P and the curiously underrated (imho) O(> albums... Prince was suddenly VERY back and very inspired.

I too love the head shaving... made me laugh.

I am not jealous of the attendee and the souvenirs.... not jealous at all.... oh no... no me mister... not one bit. (Having I protested a little bit too much yet? wink )

Living in Minneapolis definitely had its advantages when it comes to Prince. You just had to get in with the right people and not act like you were a Prince fanatic. Just so you know though, after all these shows I've seen...I'm still jealous of the people who were able to go to a Lovesexy aftershow or see a Sign O' The Times show in person.

I saw this film in March '95 around the time of his UK shows, a friend at school loaned me her sister's copy. I pretty much knew nothing about Prince at this time but had got into him with the release of 'Letitgo' and listening to 'The Hits/The B-Sides'.

After seeing this film I was hooked. The music, the visuals... everything was amazing to me back then, I couldn't get enough. And the fact that most of this material was unreleased was so cool and mysterious but soon grew frustrating as I got into Prince's stuff more... I needed The Gold Experience!

I like the storyline, it fits with the whole 'interactive' theme and was a peek into the future, he'd obviously been thinking about using the internet to get his stuff out there for a while.

I managed to track down a copy of the 10,000 magazine which is featured in the film for £40.

Great times.

We promised 2 come back 2 Minneapolis 4 our 21st birthdays but life over took & our dreams got suspended in time.....almost but not quite! wink

We were in Minnesota 3/20-4/11 & we missed everything by the sounds of it! fit

Had to listen to it again, it's been so long. Tommy was the "piano player". Prince was just going around the stage basically giving each band member a "moment' in the spotlight.

On Peep the Technique, Prince was playing the drums from about 3:15 to the end of the song.

"Bud Light" was standing right next to me and a couple of friends up front and center. He had long hair and tattoos. I'm assuming Prince knew who he was and that he could play guitar, since he brought him up onstage to do just that. It was a little awkward at first. He was trying to play and nothing was happening. That's when Prince grabbed it back from him and said let me see if that works, and played a short solo. He then gave it back to "Bud Light" and he did his thing for a bit, then when Prince called out for him to do a solo...NOTHING! lol a la Terence Trent D'Arby.

Actually at the point of this concert WB was out of the picture, their employees that were based at Paisley Park had been gone for nearly a year and a half.
