You got that right jackmitz! Some people are just so ignorant. Does this person have any clue how many people worldwide have recorded a Dylan song?? Probably not.

Of course people have re-recorded a Dylan song, how could they go wrong...a tone deaf hoover would pull it off better than howling Bob.

[Edited 1/11/12 17:04pm]

Its not really about his vocals. Never has been (unless we are talking about hisveryman persona). Its about the meaning, content, and lyrics of his songs..and yes, arrangements at times.

Folks/musicians could only hope to be able to write a song with as much relevance and meaning as one of his songs.

Good lord...sometimes I wonder why I visit the .org Even Princey himself covers Dylan...in fact, just a few weeks ago we were lucky enough to see the band cover 'Make You Feel My Love'. And, on the biggest stage in the world (the Super Bowl), P covered a Dylan tune.

Look, come on, Dylan is a shocking vocalist/performer and he writes poems not songs...anyhooo Clapton is the same, he can not sing for shit but at least he can play the guitar.

even if true, which people will debate, it doesn't mean he can sing

His voice IS shot now, but through '97 he was still a very strong vocalist. It's a different style of singing. Some people can't stand Tom Waits' voice, or Garcia's singing, while I think they're all great singers.

Yea, they're right up there with Gaye, Wonder, Green and Franklin. Unbelievable. No wonder Prince doesn't get the credit he deserves on this site for his genius when you have people with this worldview.

I suggest that anyone who doubts Dylan's contribution to 20th century art and literature listen, while reading the lyrics to Visions of Johanna. Totally agree about Blind Willie McTell, which was an outtake til the late 80s.

Obviously, Dylan is revered in the American music world. I won't ever dispute that. Don't you dare tell me he has a gifted voice. Hell to the no. Never did, doesn't now. no no no!

First, show me a post where I didn't give P his due. Go ahead...I'll wait.

Second, like I said, it's a DIFFERENT style of singing. Nothing like Al Green, or Areths, or Stevie.

No need to get snarky, pal. There's room on this earth for Stevie and Dylan.

the difference is if Stevie was a new singer just getting started, he'd be able to get a recording contract as a singer, while Dylan would get laughed out of the room. If not already famous, he wouldn't even make it to the first audition of American Idol. They'd say something ot the effect of "you do realize this is a singing competition, right?"

People "think" too much. These figures aren't pulled out of the ether. They're based on public records of property holdings, touring income and totals of what things like song publishing royalties are worth to him. Some of y'all acting like $250 million isn't an INSANE amount of money. With the lifestyle the guy lives and the amount of lawsuits he's involved with HE'S lucky to be worth that much.

Right, and the ONLY way to gague someone's merit is how they would fare on Idol? God knows, Paula Abdul IS the ONE great arbiter of talent. Different strokes for different folks, people. Vocal gymnastics (or soul yodeling) may be impressive, but that doesn't make one a great singer. Phrasing and passion play a HUGE role as well. And god knows, there's more to life than soul singing.

And, by the way...Dylan was a kid when his first record came out. He was hardly famous...in fact, he was a nobody.

I'm aware he wasn't famous before he was famous. It was a different era, though. In an era of rebels and social unrest, his songwriting made him famous. His inablity to sing well may have even been an asset. That doesn't mean he's a good singer. There is pretty much no other era he would have made it as a singer.

My earlier post wasn't supposed to be american idol specific, I just used htat as an example of singing ability

I admit that Dylan is a monument in music history and people should at least respect that. just like Prince fans want their idol 2 get the respect he deserves..even from those who don´t like his music..

I don´t love Dylan, Clapton ,Neil Young... well maybe just a few songs,

I prefer Stevie Wonder and others but that doesn´t mean I will put Dylan down...I just can´t listen 2 his music and his voice really isn´t that great wink a lot of critics have said this through the years...with respect wink

even Forbes them selves say that their estimates are within a range of 100 million give or take. You can't trust these lists, and it has been reported that publicists sometimes push to have their client on such lists, whereas other people maintain privacy to stay off any such lists, because they don't want their business published because it doesn't help them in any way and could actually harm them. Notice these lists don't usually break down how they are adding up the $ amounts so you can really compare different people.

for example (again this is Forbes):

With one exception, no one is putting Dylan down. We're just stating the obvious ... he can't sing.

We're not doubting his iconic status or his song writing abilities. His voice just sounds like ... well.. shit.

Dude, I'm actually agreeing with you here, but that's China. You can't believe anything that comes through their "news" system.

$100 million still don't make Prince a billionaire. And I'd bet he's closer to $150 million that 350. lol

I've seen lists that break it down. In fact, I'm pretty sure Forbes at least lists where the money comes from; touring, album sales, businesses outside of the entertainment field, etc.

Edit: Reading is fundamental
