Initial tracking took place on 9 December, 1986 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (two days after Bob George and Walkin' In Glory, the day before Le Grind). The track, along with Bob George and Le Grind, was recorded for a birthday party Prince was hosting for Sheila E. on 11 December, 1986.

You could definitely hear the songs, but the quality had a lot to be desired. I went to see a Lovesexy show in Chicago a few months later and was so excited to hear Bob George and Superfunkycalifragisexy live. Shortly after that I met a guy who worked in a local record store and he gave me a cassette tape that was actually pretty clear, compared to what I had.

That had to be an exciting feeling to hear something live U weren't officially supposed to hear.

Superfunkicalifragisexy was previewed at the SOTT live rehearsal at 1st Avenue in 1987

I had boots of the first one and a promo copy from a DJ friend of mine for the "official" release. I also got the hits 1/2/b-sides as a promo 3 disc set from the same.
