Purple discourse Do Prince fans share a way of speaking or engaging in discourse? What I mean is, are there certain expressions that are unique to Prince fans, or are there shared ways of speaking just because they belong to a community, as found here at the org?
For example, and by no means should the discussion be limited to such examples, I find myself saying "y'all" a lot, coz I've gotten used to Prince saying it. Then again, sometimes we include Prince lyrics in our discussions or even in the way we communicate with others. Unless one is aware of the lyrics, then one might not understand the Purple context in which they were used.
This thread was meant 2 b a sincere question / discussion.

Yes, some Prince fans use what is known as "Princebonics," for example using 2, R, I noticed recently that after a certain interview with Prince was posted on the org, that a few people began using capital letters because Prince did. There are many other Prince type expressions/whatever used on this (and possibly other) site.
Personally I find it all rather silly. I prefer using the methods of communication that I was taught as a child, I don't need to type or use phrases like Prince. I think that quite a few people (not all) who use Princespeak are actually of the thinking that it makes them like Prince, or somehow brings them closer to Prince, or think that Prince will be pleased that they use Princebonics because they think that he reads this stuff.

Y'all is not a Prince-ism - it's an Americanism. Outside of so-called Princebonics (an affectation that I wish people who are not Prince would swear off using), I can't think of any language that is common or unique to Prince fans. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Exactly, yet people from outside of the USA use it frequently.

I'm from West Virginia. All I say is Y'all. Just throwing that out there. "I never want to stop singing this song!" Prince in Montreal, 12/2/11, just before performing Purple Rain

very interesting. and yes, the symbols that u include above can definitely be said to be part of a Purple discourse.
as 4 your reference to Princespeak and possible motives of using it...I think that's the point I'm trying 2 make...is that around Prince or his music, a discourse community might have been formed.
by no means am i suggesting there is a uniformity in this community, as expressed by the many divergent views we all have at times regarding the man and his art, but i do think there are patterns of things we share now and then in the way we communicate about him or his music or his world in general No justice, No peace

true. but u know, i can actually remember a thread where some 1 here questioned whether Prince was being fake country or something like that by using "y'all."

Y'all is an inclusive statement that means you all. I learned how to talk in Boston but grew up in Detroit. Native Detroiters, swear I speak with an accent of those raised on the East Coast.
Yet, when I go visiting family on the East Coast, they swear that I speak with an accent of those raised in the South (country), specifically because I say y'all, a lot. I haven't been south of Kentucky since I was 2 years old.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

random thought: I noticed in the live setting, Prince likes to say "show of hands..." No justice, No peace

Again, that expression did not originate with Prince. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I once wrote an essay for English Lit in the 4 u 2 language when I was about 14. My teacher made me re-write it. I didn't do it again... Hamburger, Hot Dog, Root Beer, Pussy

yep
but, it makes me think, in more than 1 song, Prince mentions degrees. He does it in Pussy Control and another song which I cannot remember now.
It makes me think that he values education.

I like the sound of Y'all.

fwiw I hate when he says 'y'all' etc. in a "Im down" manner. I liked the faux english accent enigma talk of Velvet Sweat "Climb in my fur."

Yes, I tend to always find myself sayin "ya'll" as well... and I will say "brotha", "ya dig" (and or "can ya dig it" or "I really dug that".) Also my dad is a drummer and when he plays I am always doing the count and saying "On the One! 2! 3! 4! C'mon!!! Haha lol ![]() "I tend to speak only when spoken too" [Edited 12/6/11 1:56am] [quote] [Edited 12/6/11 1:58am]

We all know what it means when we say "LRC" or "IIWYG" so I would say we share some common language.
But as a side note... "engaging in discourse" ... lofty words for the org, smartypants. Raising the bar kind of high for us, aren't you?

Just the other day my boss told me she was tired and done for the day, so I simply suggested she keep dancing cause she oughta keep the blood flowing down to her feet and that our team-member Maurice would be around shortly with a bucket whose contents was solely squirrel meat.
