Shit..the original in its prime (82-83) wouldnt have packed the floor. It isnt exactly Shackles On My Feet. And to be fair, next dj set, go put on Hey Yo and see what happens...and DONT lie either.

Yay, but the original is still better. This new version has more of that laid back, geriatric funk, but it's still cool.

Nay here. It's not bad but as a single or even an odd album track it's pretty weak imo. The cover of Extralovable that was out just a while back nailed it better. C'mon P just release the original!

Hopefully Prince will rerecord then release all of the classic vault material, it's so much fun watching certain orgers spazz out! It's music not war!

This is what I'm afraid of him doing to his recordings once he owns the rights to them. Sure he has a right to they're his creations. I always think of the "new" version of 1999 and pray he never touches the originals unless they're just remastered, not re-recorded. Call it spazzing or whatever. I understand the point where some people get their panties in a bunch over some of this stuff and I agree but I really hope you were being sarcastic about re-recording his "classic" vault material. I liked or disliked it for what it was. Music is art and I can't imagine an artist taking a classic painting and redoing it to fit his mood of the hour.

He said he has 3 versions planned for release. I'd rather wait and see what comes than get overworked over a song. I like the unreleased bootleg version and this one is cool too. I think some people went overboard over it though. It got hilarious on the other thread.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It's not just to fit his mood of the hour, but also (it seems) to suit his girlfriend of the hour. Was that cutsie rap necessary?? It seems the only purpose was to give her exposure or credit/money. Men have gone to war, "slept out in the rain," and done all kinds of crazy stuff for women - I guess sacrificing artistic integrity is just one of the things a guy would do.

YAY - EXCEPT for the rap.

*Devil's advocate*

Van Gogh painted the various sunflower paintings to fit with his particular mood/depression. Same goes for his self portraits.

... And if you look at writers, many have changed their works to fit in with changing public opinion & acceptability.

Yes, you are right - good point! I thought about your point and noticed that with the paintings, people will just appreciate the one that they like better and ignore the others, or they will admire the fact that the artist could create multiple variations on a theme. Basically, people are OK w/ various paintings. But w/ writings, there's a similar agitation/argument among readers as we're getting here among fans about Extralovable - I think it's because the audience views a new or different version as a statement from the writer that the old one doesn't count, it's not the definitive version, it was just a "rough draft," and the new one negates the previous version. This is controversial. In the case of writings, this view is generally true - the writer is "editing" him/herself. Perhaps it would be helpful to think of Prince more as a painter, creating many separate works that are a variation on a theme. One does not negate the other.

Nicely put.

In this case, I like the new track. Not quite as much as the original, but I appreciate it nonetheless as a decent effort and a nice track. Of course, any new reinterpritation of an existing work is bound to polarise a fanbase. You only have to look at George Lucas' constant tweaking of the Starwars franchise to see that sometimes it's best to leave well alone smile

im glad Prince re-recorded this, it proves that the lack of magic in recent recordings is not down to poor song writing, but poor production techniques. The best thing about the original, the energy and rawness has been completely muted on this new version. I would love to see Prince just write a record and get in a decent producer to help him out (yes I know Im not the first person to ever mention this!).

I think the writer analogy is just as valid as the painter one. After all, what is a 30 year old outtake that wasn't meant to be heard by an audience but a "rough draft"?
