The Lyrics Of Prince Rogers Nelson/: A Literary Look At A Creative, Musical Poet, Philosopher, And Storyteller (Volume 3)

The Lyrics of Prince is a thorough analysis as well as an enjoyable read. As a researcher, I know that the time and commitment dedicated to this work is phenomenal. The observations are thoughtful and highly enlightening. The political edge that permeated the entire work is subtle, but sharp! --Kevin E. Taylor, Researcher --Black Entertainment Television

A Literary Look is the most serious study of the Minneapolis artist's body of work since Dave Hill's Prince: A Pop Life. McInnis brings passion and insight to his writing that provides a new context to Prince's place in pop-music history, as well as African American history. A Literary Look is a refreshing reminder of Prince's genius, past and present. --Jim Walsh, Music Critic --St. Paul Pioneer Press

A very impressive book. Stimulating and enlightening! It's about time someone has taken the time and effort to study Prince's lyrics in depth. Full of research and insight, it is an important work, which deserves attention. --Per Nilsen, author --Prince: A Documentary

I've just finished reading it. This is my opinion, I wrote it in a previous post:

The Lyrics of Prince, by C. Liegh McInnis, is very interesting in that it's a thorough and thought-provoking analysis of Prince's lyrics, something that is often omitted in other books. All those who think that Prince's lyrics are only about party and sex should read this book.

Not that I agree with everything he says. Specially, I think sometimes he read too much in the lyrics and he is also obsessed with the issue of race, discussing it even when, in my opinion, there's no room to it.

But I recommend this book. It's also a good complement of the fact-oriented works by Per Nilsen, since it discusses Prince's cultural significance and offers an interpretative look on the man.

So I agree with the positive reviews you mention, except for the fact that the political edge in the book isn't subtle at all, as the first reviewer says, but pretty obvious and, to me, sometimes annoying.

Oh, I totally forgot to mention Barney Hoskins and C. Liegh McInnis. The latter one is very hard to find, I tried to order it several times. Looks more like a thesis paper than a proper book.

My favorite book about Prince is Dave Hill’s Prince: A Pop Life, followed by all of the Per Nilsen works and McInnis’ The Lyrics of Prince. Also Bream’s and Hoskins books are good as well as Matos’ Sign of the Times, and there is another out-of-print book that I love, Prince in his own Words.

just ordered pers nilsen - a documentary off amazon for 50p. any good?

Yes, but there are 3 editions - 1990 which goes up to 1989 only, but has a great photo section with photos and listings of all the bootleg albums up to that date, -1993 the one I bought new in 1995 which has details up to the symbol album and bibliography and a later edition from 1996 or 97 (Which I don't know about it). Be interesting to see hwich one you get. It was pretty much number one book until DMSR the first decade came along in 1998 and Slave to the Rhythmn (For the post 1988 Prince)

Also good (And in my collection) are

Dave Hill - Prince a Pop Life (Early 1989)- Good solid no nonsense English biography

Barney Hoskins - Imp of the Perverse - 1988 A bit gossipy but some GREAT photos

Alex Hahn - The Rise and Fall of Prince (Possessed0 - 2003 Gossipy but essential, a real period piece as its pre Musicology but still essential

Kind of good

Thief in the Temple by ???? Vague but readable

Geoff Brown - Guide to Music of Prince 1995 Small Book, British Black Rock journalists opinions and details on the albums to Come. He at least praises Adore like he should "A superb piece of falsetto soul singing"

Matthew Cracieri - Prince a playlist 2007 - Unique book that describes his career along to 50 essential songs from Games to Musicology

Jason Draper - Prince Chaos and Disorder and Revolution - 2010 Okay if lightweight and up to date career discussion

Tragic

Steven Ivory - Prince 1984, horrendously cobbled gossipy bio put together during Purple Rain Hysteria, a void, some good photos but cheap looking and badly (Childishly) written.

Prince and Some photographer dude with weird name - 21 nights, horrendous vanity book with photos of Prince and maids getting frisky.

Haven't read

Ronin Ro book from 2011, the big picture book sold at Barnes and Noble in 2009

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I bought "Pop Life" on the strength of KoolEaze' recommendation, along with Stevie Wonder's Musical Guide To The Classic Albums.

you won't be disappointed with pop life. whilst it's colloquially written it largely avoids gossip. objectively written, it praises where due but isn't scared to highlight the complexities of prince the personality, the title giving a nod to the fact that prince occupies a world far removed from the author's. let me know what u think smile

It's out of print, and can be very expensive and it only goes up to 2004, but if it's facts you want, there is no substitute.

There are a couple of others worthy of mention.

http://www.princevault.co...ys_Of_Wild

http://www.princevault.co..._It_Up_2.0

Both are out of print, but can often be found on ebay.

Hello.Do you know where i could purchase these books about Prince. Is Ebay the only place..

Thank you

Kimberly...

Steer clear of the various incarnations of the Liz Jones book. You'd be better off tracking down old issues of People magazine or the Enquirer or cutting and pasting together those quickie bios that used to appear in Teen Beat.
