This has briefly been discussed in Seanman's Janet thread in non-prince but thought the Prince documentary warranted its own thread here.

BBC four will be screening documentaries on four legendary American artists of the 80s as part of its all American season, including 'Prince: A Purple Reign'.

Prince revolutionised the perception of black music in the Eighties with worldwide hits such as 1999 and Kiss.

He became a global sensation with the Oscar-winning movie Purple Rain in 1984, embarking on an incredible journey of musical self-discovery.

From the psychedelic Around the World in a Day to his masterpiece album Sign O’ The Times and experiments with hip-hop and jazz, Prince remains one of most ambitious and prolific songwriters of his generation.

He tested the boundaries of taste and decency with explicit sexual lyrics and stage shows and in the Nineties fought for ownership of his name and control of his music.

Still in demand as one of the most flamboyant live performers around, Prince remains a controversial and elusive creative force.

Contributors include: Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson and Paisley Park label president Alan Leeds.

There doesn't appear to be much further info around at the moment but it seems this is a new documentary (not to be confused with previous BBC Radio documentary Purple Reign: The Prince Story) and it will be on BBC four the television channel and not BBC 4 the radio station. BBC four is a reputable channel so hopefully it'll be a good watch!

Well, they've been showing the U.S. version of that Omnibus documentary on Sky Arts recently. Hopefully this BBC4 doc is something brand new and of the same calibre.

At current exchange rates only about 62.5% of it will I am afraid. You will have to make up the rest with the avi files from the Interactive CD-ROM.

BBC Radio Times critic/blogger Jack Seale has previewed the doc and posted a few tweets about it:

“Just watched upcoming BBC4 Prince doc. An hour of TV all about Prince. Every minute concerned Prince. This was a good programme.”

“9pm 25 November BBC4 for that Prince documentary. FOLLOWED BY PURPLE RAIN, OH YES.”

“tbh for big fans there wasn't an enormous amount of new stuff because an hour is nowhere near long enough. Still a joy though.”

Although there may not be much new info it seems like they’ve done a good job within the limits of an hour and a screening of Purple Rain afterwards, if confirmed, is an added bonus. It'll be nice to have an evening of purple viewing!

I wouldn't think so. This seems like it's part of a new series, in a season of programs.

I think I read there showing Purple Rain after?? that would be cool a little night of Prince.
