I don't think so, there was a Miles thread on here a month or so ago the at linked to a Alan Leeds interview who said that the 2 met and then prince sent him some stuff, one of which was Can I Play With U, Miles did his thing on it sent it back and nothing came of it, then a while later Prince sent him som more stuff, (possibly some of the Madhouse 24 stuff) and nothing came of that either, i guess Prince didn't fancy the thought of giving up full control and actually collaborating.

I should elaborate. I know these exist but, he has said that the versions circulating are not his,

or words to that effect.

The story from what I've heard, I think it's on the Prince Vault website, is that both Prince and Miles were disappointed with the outcome and felt it wasn't their best work. They never worked on anything else though (supposedly Miles was quite up for Prince doing a full album with him but Prince worshipped Miles so much he couldn't get his head around 'directing' him in a studio).

The song has 'nearly' been released on Miles box sets a few times and very recently too but Prince has previously stated he doesn't want anything released that doesn't show Miles at his best so he keeps nixing it.

Sweet in it's way but obviously from our point of view we'd just like more archive stuff released!

Of all the outtakes, I've always found Can I Play With You rather horrid, so I haven't bothered getting the long version. I much prefer Prince's pop-productions from this era.

Don't forget the incredible "Sticky Wicked" by Chaka. That one was even released.

Can I Play With You is one of my favorites as well. There's very few pop songs in the world with such an explosively confusing jazz approach. Challenging. Experi-Mental. And very free. That's MY Prince.

Give it a go. I kinda get what you mean about the version that was circulating for years, It's not really one of my favourites either. But the extended version is great. Especially half way through when it suddenly turns into something reminiscent of Crystal Ball for no reason whatsoever. Great stuff. And the quality is far better than that old circulating shorter version.

How long is the 'long version'? I've heard one about 6 and a half minutes long - is that the short version??

^^^ no that is the long version, with the bass solo bit, that's all new, up until it was leaked earlier this year only a short version was circulating.
