April 7, 1985: The artist known as Prince performs at the Orange Bowl during the final show of his Purple Rain tour

During the spring of 1985, there wasn't a bigger music star in the world than the artist known as Prince. His landmark Purple Rain album had catapulted the eccentric musician to the top of the pop charts, eclipsing Michael Jackson. Not only was the album number one in sales at the time, he also starred in the movie "Purple Rain" which also did well at the box office.

At the very height of his career, Prince brought his band The Revolution to the Orange Bowl on April 7, 1985 for the final concert of his Purple Rain tour. The Orange Bowl was transformed into the "Purple Bowl". More than 55,000 people attended and they didn't leave disappointed. The opening act was percusionist/singer Sheila E., who was a Prince protoge and had a popular song on the pop charts "The Glamorous Life". Prince performed 22 songs that evening, including every song from the Purple Rain album. He closed his show appropriately with the album's title track.

The tour sold 1.7 million tickets according to Spin Magazine. It also marked the touring debut of his band The Revolution. The Orange Bowl performance would be Prince's only appearance at the legendary stadium. But it wouldn't be his last or most memorable South Florida concert. Nearly 22 years later, Prince performed at halftime of Super Bowl XLI at Dolphins Stadium (Now known as Sun Life Stadium).

Sheila did these songs?? Were they even written yet?
I have a boot of the final show ("I don't know when's the return") which includes Sheila's set and it doesn't inlcude these songs.

Really curious to hear more!

Also, I wish video existed of her set. (from any date)

I was hoping someone with info or who was at this show would comment on that as well. I got this from a site, they are supposed to get back to me on the accuracy of it too...

Sister Fate basic tracks were recorded by Prince and Sheila E. in the first week of January, 1985 at the Cheshire Studio, Atlanta, GA, USA, while in town for five dates on the Purple Rain Tour (during the same set of sessions as A Love Bizarre).

Dear Michaelangelo, Bedtime Story Toy Box were recorded in early December, 1984.

Girls & Boys initial tracking took place on 8 July, 1985 at the Washington Avenue Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA

Holly Rock initial tracking took place on 24 April, 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA,

Initial tracking took place on 27 January, 1984, at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (seven days after A Million Miles (I Love You), five days before Tricky). The track was initially intended to be credited to Apollonia 6 and it was included as the first track on a 29 February, 1984 configuration of the Apollonia 6 album, before being added to the final configuration of Purple Rain, compiled on 14 April, 1984 (its inclusion made it necessary for Let's Go Crazy and Computer Blue to be shortened). The recording used on both albums was the same (although edited for time restrictions on Purple Rain), and was always intended as a duet between Prince and Apollonia. Lisa Coleman actually sang behind Apollonia's voice when it was evident her vocals couldn't carry the song.

Released January 25, 1985

Take Me With U

I can't disguise the pounding of my heart
It beats so strong
It's in your eyes, what can I say
They turn me on

CHORUS:
I don't care where we go
I don't care what we do
I don't care pretty baby
Just take me with U

Come on and touch the place in me
That's calling out your name
We want each other oh so much
Why must we play this game?

Don't care where we go
I don't care what we do
I don't care pretty baby
Just take me with U

I don't care if we spend the night at your mansion
I don't care if we spend the night on the town
All I want is 2 spend the night 2gether
All I want is 2 spend the night in your arms

2 be around U is so-oh right
U're sheer perfection (Thank U)
Drive me crazy, drive me all night
Just don't break up the connection

CHORUS {x2}

Just take me with U
Won't U take me with U?
Honey, take me with U

In a hotel during the 1984 Victory Tour, Michael reading a story about “Purple Rain” “Will Prince’s Purple, Reign?”

Prince visits Michael, 1984

Soon after viewing “Purple Rain”, Michael invited Prince over to his home for dinner with Janet and La Toya. Prince is said to have made a few unsuccessful passes at La Toya. At the end of the evening, Prince gave Michael a gift – a box containing leaves, twigs and a cassette of some satanic like chants. “Michael Jackson: The Magic and the Madness” reported a similar event. “At another encounter with Michael, Prince brought him a present in a small box. Inside there were some colorful metal charms and some feathers. Michael closed the box quickly and shot a look at Quincy Jones, who was present. Then Prince left.”

While Prince was in Los Angeles, Quincy Jones arranged for him to meet Michael Jackson over dinner at Jackson’s Encino family home. Jones felt the two creative forces should know one another. “It was a strange summit,” according to writer Quincy Troupe. They’re so competitive with each other that neither would give anything up. They kind of sat there checking each other out, but saying very little. It was a fascinating stalemate between two very powerful dudes.”

Jackson showed up backstage at a couple Prince shows in 1984. The two icons, whose “Thriller” and “Purple Rain” defined the 1980s, never did work together. Later that decade, when both were recording at the same Los Angeles studio, Prince invited Jackson to play ping-pong. Michael, a star since age 8 who had lived a sheltered life, didn’t know how.

“You want me to slam it?” Prince asked, according to engineer David Z, who was there. “Michael drops his paddle and holds his hands up in front of his face so the ball won’t hit him. Michael walks out with his bodyguard, and Prince starts strutting around like a rooster. ‘Did you see that? He played like Helen Keller.’”

But Bland insists the two icons got along fine: “They’d shoot hoops at Paisley Park,” Prince’s studio/home in Chanhassen. “We used to get packages from MJJ Productions [with] footage of Sly Stone performing in Europe. Prince would pop it in the VCR, and we’d watch it.”

BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY

ALAN LEEDS: Prince went to a James Brown gig [in 1983] with Bobby Z, his drummer at the time, Big Chick, who was his security guard, and I think Jill Jones, who was one of his protégés. By now, everybody knows what happened at that gig. I don’t think Prince realized that Michael was going to be there. James looked a little puzzled in that video when Michael whispered in his ear, “Hey, bring Prince up.” And of course Prince didn’t really know what to do either. He went to the guitar first but he fumbles with that because it was left-handed. He playeda few licks, did some dancing and knocked over a prop by accident. Now I always wondered if Michael intentionally brought Prince up to put him in that position just to say, “Hey, you think you’re on my ass? Well follow this, motherfucker [laughs].” Bobby Z called me and said, “Oh boy…he made an ass of himself tonight.” He said Prince didn’t say a word the whole way to the hotel.

ALAN LEEDS: Before we set out on the Purple Rain tour, it was a case of Prince wanting to see what Michael and the Jacksons were doing in terms of production, lighting, staging and everything with the Victory tour. We charted a jet with a couple of his bodyguards and Jerome Benton from the Time and Leroy Bennett, who was Prince’s lighting and production designer for his tours. We flew to Dallas to the old stadium where the Cowboys played. There was a feeling in our camp that while what they were doing was a very solid stadium production, there was nothing really cutting edge about the technology. The Varilites, which was a brand name for a type of computerized lighting, was the gold standard in the industry at that time. And we made sure we had all that shit. But the Jackson’s production didn’t. Prince had a lot of respect for Michael, but he was mildly impressed with the show.

17 Days

the rain will come down, then U will have 2 choose. If U believe, look 2 the dawn and U shall never lose

17 Days", written by Prince, Wendy, Lisa, Dr. Fink song slated for the Vanity 6 album. background vocals include Brenda Bennett

When Doves Cry B side

released 5.16.1984

Called u yesterday
U didnt answer your phone
The main drag is knowing that
U probably werent alone

So here I sit in my lonely room
Lookin 4 my sunshine
But all Ive got is two cigarettes
And this broken heart of mine

So let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

Youve been gone 17 days
17 long nights
The main drag is knowing that
Youre holding someone else tight

I wanna to call u everyday
And beg u 2 be near me
But I know your head is underwater
I doubt that u could hear me

So let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

Ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
17 days
Ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
17 days

Called u yesterday
U didnt answer your phone
If youre the one whos always lonely
Then Im the one whos always alone

So here I sit in my lonely room
Lookin 4 my sunshine
All Ive got is 2 cigarettes
And this broken heart of mine

Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

Why dont you answer your phone?

Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down, down

Let the rain come down
Let the rain come down
