People hate the fact that Larry influenced Prince's religious views.

I don't know why. It's not that big a deal but people make it as if it is so.

Here we go with the trolling thing

It must be just sooooo empowering when you're a teenage girl to accuse everyone on the internet whose statements you don't like of being a troll (whatever THAT is), huh?

Prince is a grown man and ultimately made the choice himself but, from the outside (at least to me) Larry Graham coming on the Prince scene marked a dramatic tangent in Prince music that has continued to this day....its not just Larry but I think its widely aknowledge that Larry was the catalyst.

This is just seems to be the genera opinion on here before I get jumped on -

Prince was, it seemed, still doing some soul searching under the name prince ...then Prince started to work with Larry Graham and, by Princes own admission, Larry took him to task about swearing and raunchy lyrics saying that only uneducated people swore because they were stuck for articulation (tell that to Stephen Fry). Obviously theres the introduction to JW faith and certain political/social views and theories which, unlike any of the other religious influences Prince has displayed in his music, really seemed to change the feel of the majority of track...how could it not, Prince was now using his music to do The Work.

It also coincides with the (at the time in my opinion) awful New Power Soul album which over time has got better due to virtue that theres plenty of other more recent stuff to pip it round the U-bend.

It may be nothing to do with Larry, Jehovah Witness faith, a change is subject matter, an interesting view on certain political and social situations,...but something changed and has never really got back to how it was before it jumped track.

It has been argued that perhaps Larry exploited Princes disillusionment with the music biz and 'got his claws' into him to champions certain views dear to Larrys heart...he ceratin succeeded in getting his influence on tape, on tour and even probably boosted a few sales of his own music that wouldnt have been shifted if the 'associated artist' tag hadnt been slapped on him

You cant really BLAME Larry for Princes choices because he made them but I guess you could apply the 'in with the wrong crowd' principle if you consider the influence detremental

Thanx

I had been noticing on here that everyone mentions Larry Graham's name with an underlying contempt and I didn't know why.

I wasn't aware of this supposed influence on Prince's religious practices and that everyone held him responsible for converting Prince and the decline of his music

Eros, a lot of fans blame Larry for Prince becoming a JW based on hearsay. From what I've been told and mentioned here several times, "...it was Prince's mother who wanted Prince to become a JW before she passed away, and he had many discussions with her about the JW religion before then." Obviously he fulfilled her wishes. It's also been mentioned on here by others, that he had many talks with George Benson about the JW religion, long before he met with Larry Graham and had discussions on the topic. At the end of the day, Prince is a grown man, obviously capable of making his own personal, life decisions and choices; including making the choice to become a JW, but many fans can't seem to accept that, and express distaste for a musician's 'personal' decision they have absolutely no rights to or will ever have control over.

Some fans also blame Larry for Prince's decision to no longer use sexually-explicit lyrics and swearing in his music. Which makes absolutely no sense for fans to blame Larry for a grown, man's decision, but again, some fans can't seem to accept or let go of that and tend to go on an anger fest against Larry on here, as though he stole a loaf of bread off their table. lol

If somewhere down the road, Prince chooses to embrace a different religion, it will still be his personal choice, not the fans.

The topic has been raised several times here and I'm sure your inquiry won't be the last.

Thank you.

Prince IS a grown ass man, perfectly capable of deciding whether he wanted to become a witness for Jehovah lol or not and so he did. Larry didn't have shit to do with that, so the folks who keeps saying so....that's a big NEGATIVE!

My reasons to hate Larry Graham:

The old crappy music Larry brought to Prince's setlists... like Everyday People - I Want To Take You Higher - Thankyoufalletinmebemiceelfagin etc...

Those old Larry G./ Graham Central Station songs are making me: barf

Then there's the religious sect, the Jehovah thing: rolleyes

Prince censoring his dirty words in his music.....

lots of reasons for a Prince fan to really hate Larry Graham with a passion!!

Dearly love Larry Graham but really reject most of the JW doctine, although I find

them incrediby fascinating and admit I go JW for Christmas and my birthday.

Golly, man, the guy can really, truly slap a bass, and I love his support of Prince,

even though things get a bit twisted when you combine stiff-neck religion and funk.

The bottom line is Larry is a great performer, one of the best, IMHO. When Larry and

Prince jam, the world stops for me.-they are that good together.

I can use the word "dislike" instead of "hate" - "hate" is such a powerful word right?

Btw. I take my warning from the mods for being inappropriate, in case someone is wondering: the yt clip was a "humorous" clip from the film: Life Of Brian.

but let me take the warning. I hope this isn't causing me trouble to discribe what the yt link was about, to those who did not see it.

Larry Graham is one hell of a funk musician. The distaste for him on this board is what seperates funk and music fans from Prince fans.
