Condorcet Album Poll: Sign O' The Times-Final Results Available

UPDATE: The polls is now closed. Click here to see the results:

http://www.cs.cornell.edu...thm=runoff

Hi there,

The series of polls ranking the songs on each album officially released by Prince ended last week with Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, which was the lowest ranked record in the poll of the best Prince albums conducted in April.

The first album poll was Sign O' The Times, due to this record being the highest ranked in the poll of the best Prince albums. But the poll had to be interrumpted due to some people commenting the results in prince.org before the poll ended. This led to less participation, precisely in the favourite album of the fans in prince.org according to the above mentioned poll.

To correct this issue, I'll conduct the Sign O' The Times poll again. So please remember: don’t discuss the preliminary results or campaign for your favorite song(s) until the poll is closed. I plan to close the poll on Thursday, but I may close it early if the preliminary results are discussed on this site. This is to make sure the poll is as accurate as possible.

Click here to vote in the Sign O' The Times poll:

Thanks everybody!

I just voted. I wonder if I ranked the songs the same this time around? Can't remember what my choices were last time...

54 votes and still more than one day to vote! We may break the participation record here!

I agree with your comments. When voting one is reminded again of how many amazing tunes are on this record.

V10LETBLUES

I agree with everyone, I had a difficult time deciding my order of preference. They are all so good. And my preference changes all the time depending on my mood.

That was tricky... It's hard to rank down songs that are still so good but just not your favorite

Good to see so many votes this time! Is this a record?

Thanks, Javi, for doing a revote. I was sad when I had to cut it off the first time around.

We have 79 votes now, that's a lot, but still far from the 98 that voted on the Batman poll. There are still 4 hours left, but it's difficult that this will be the participation record.

Anyway, it's great to see so many people taking part. wink

Interesting. Who would have guessed that the Batman poll would set the participation record? Must have been a slow couple of days on the org. lol

The poll is now closed. If I Was Your Girlfriend has won, and the title track has ranked second.

The results are similar to the first time the poll was conducted. But the winner then was Sign O' The Times. Curiously enough, the title track has been winning for a long time during the current poll, but it has finally lost to If I Was Your Girlfriend. It seems that a higher participation benefits IIWYG!

83 votes! Thanks for taking part.

The switch in the top two positions is actually consistent with the results in the U.S. singles poll, which included the same songs:

http://www.cs.cornell.edu...thm=runoff

There were only 35 voters in the first SOTT poll because I cut it off early due to discussion of the preliminary results. The discussion involved the song "The Cross," which people thought should rank higher than it did at that time:

http://prince.org/msg/7/360382

Since "The Cross" actually moved down a slot in the revote, from #12 to #13, it appears that it was not underranked in the first poll.

Thanks for doing the revote. I have a lot more confidence in these results. I'm especially glad to see "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" ranked pretty high at #4, as that's one of my favorite Prince songs.

Adorecream

Its heart breaking to see Adore only made it to 3rd place, this song is incredible. But at least my #2 favourite "If I was ur girlfriend was #2 and the superior #3 SOTT is in the top 3 too. Dorothy Parker I don't think is as strong and surprised it got to number 4 and I think Housequake deserves at least the place it got, "stripped down, get down and shake yo ass funk" was what he did best after the ballads.

Still an album like this has absolutely no weak nuimbers you can give last place too, because it is just so strong, having such a great album like this, is hard for any of us to rank, because most of us feel bad about giving a song off it a low ranking. But its like we should have in bold - Relative to the quality level of this album. A song like It or Slow Love which comes near the bottom here (A to E scale, these songs are E's) would be at least a strong B on any other record.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Quite 'expectable' results there I think, taking in mind that Prince fans have such diverse musical tastes, and not everyone visits this site daily or weekly (so chances are people have missed the poll).

I didn't vote myself, because i didnt see this thread before, but i was right in guessing the names of the top 3 songs and the 3 lowest scoring songs before i opened the results... lol

Two things i notice:

A relatively 'low' position for The Cross. When the album was released over here in Europe that was one THE most favourite songs of the album it seems. I would have expected to score it at least at number 6, taking places with Strange relationship.

I expected U got the Look would have scored higher, since it was such a big hit on the charts and the clubs and one of his most catchy singles ever.

I suspect that the lack of love for "The Cross" these days may have something to do with the later evolution in Prince's spirituality toward the more repressive aspects of organized religion. If you had polled Prince fans in 1987, they might have ranked the song more highly.

"U Got the Look" is indeed catchy, but the lyrics don't do much for me compared to some of the more sophisticated material on the album.

I agree with your opinion about what has happened to "The Cross". However, that doesn't seem to have affected other spiritual songs of the 80's, particularly Anna Stesia. Well, maybe Anna Stesia is too good to be affected by anything... lol

I'm sorry you missed the poll. It was decided that each poll lasted two days, as it seemed enough to get a high participation and it reduced the chances of people discussing the results before the poll was over.

However, now that people are used to the rules, the last set of polls, which will determine the 25 favourite Prince songs as decided by the fans in this site, will probably last 3 or 4 days.

I agree that the results are quite expectable. I would have liked Dorothy Parker reaching the top 3, but it ended up 4th. I like If I Was Your Girlfriend a lot, but it isn't among my three favourites on this album (the title track, Dorothy Parker and Adore).
