Does prince have to be dirty in order to write good music?

He fought so hard for freedom, and now he seems to censor himself. This binding of expression seems to have bled into the music itself. What do y'all think?

Very true, but the music and lyrics were written during a period when prince did not censor himself. Could he write that music and those songs today if he had never written them?

Music is neither clean nor dirty. You're talking about lyrics. And all that is just a matter of perception, anyway.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Duh captain obvious. The question is whether or not prince, in his apparent desire to censor his own material from having words or lyrics that HE PERCEIVES as dirty has bound his freedom in writing music.

He didn't 'fight' for the right to have X-rated lyrics, he had those all over the place from the get go any way.

Maybe he's tired of giving his gift to rude people.

That's a good list, and those are good songs, but that are not great songs. I think it can be argued that his music has become as careful and cautious as his lyrics. Compare these songs, music wise, to erotic city, anything from sott, or lovesexy.

The Rainbow Children, She Loves Me 4 Me, Last December, Musicology, When I Lay My Hands On U, Black Sweat, 3121, Fury, Guitar, Somewhere Here On Earth, Colonized Mind, Dreamer, No More Candy 4 U, Future Soul Song, Laydown

True, he fought to be independent, but there is a little irony with becoming independent and this putting a muzzle on that side of ones personality that makes them both creative and interesting.

I really appreciate albums like the rainbow children, planet earth, musicology, lotusflower and mpls sound, even parts of 20ten, so yes, I think he can write good music since he has been less dirty, as you say.

In order 2 understand Prince's music people have 2 understand his gifts. biggrin

He is Philosophical, Visionary & Brilliant. biggrin

Because his mind is so highly philosophical, his struggle is 2 ground his thoughts & make practical use of them but it is not easy 1.

He MUST take his fertile imagination & visionary abilities & ground them in pragmatism. biggrin

I think you actually tried to answer the question. But I personally don't feel that prince is very philosophical or pragmatic, just very creative musically. Come on, we're talking about a man that believes in chem trails. That alone lends me to the belief that he isn't very bright.

His talents are many, but he makes songs about pussy and dancing, he's not Nietzsche.

Of course it depends on what you call "dirty". He's over fifty now, if he'd still sing Sister, he'd make a fool of himself. And I think it's safe to say that everything he's done since then was intended to move away from the overblown sexuality and mature as a songwriter. That's why Gett off felt like a cold shower. Ever since then his sex songs feel like a trick and I don't miss that.
What I do miss is a Prince who really has something to write about. Everything seems to revolve around religion these days and I think that blurs his vision. Although he would obviously see it different!
