the Parade era 1985-1986

Purple & Paisley Chic

Goodness will guide us if love is inside us
Let's go fishin' in the river, the river of life

I wonder U, I wonder U?
I want 2 live life 2 the ultimate high
Meet me in another world, space, and joy
It's a wonderful world, paradise
Love will conquer if U just believe

Les enfants qui mentent ne vont pas au paradis
I want 2 be your fantasy, maybe U could be mine

Revolution, put the groove on the bus
United all 4 love
And love, it isn't love until it's past

Probably the most prolific era in Prince Music history the Flesh recordings the Family introduction of the Camille voice the Dream Factory recordings(another thread) Sheila E. Birthday Party music and outtakes

Lead vocals are sung by Wendy Melvoin, marking the first time lead vocals were not sung by Prince on a Prince/Prince and the Revolution album.

Initial tracking of the track took place on 17 April, 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, with Prince recording the drum track in sequence of Little Girl Wendy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U and Under The Cherry Moon, all in one take. He then layered other instruments over all four tracks. The song was initially recorded with Prince and Wendy Melvoin both singing lead and Lisa Coleman doing a harmony background vocal.

That version was placed on an early configuration of Parade (before it even had that title), compiled on 1 May, 1985. The song was sent to Clare Fischer in mid-late 1985 for his input. Fischer did two different orchestral arrangements; one with full orchestration, and after a later request of Prince, one with only 'flute family' orchestration, much like the finally released version. These versions had Prince's lead vocal mixed in loudest, mostly obscuring Wendy's vocals. Before release Prince then omitted his own voice, so that Wendy was now singing the lead. Clare Fischer's full orchestration arrangement remains unreleased although Prince did use some of it as incidental music in Under The Cherry Moon.

The blue floral tele picured here is a custom job made by Roger Sadowsky

His Royal Badness has quite a few Hohner teles, all destinguishable from each other in detail and purpose. Hohner also supplied him with new examples during the "Purple rain" and "Parade" tours. All of them in that translucent ocher yellow with the leopard pickguard. http://www.photopix.ch/gu...e&Itemid=2

But Prince also owned a special one off.

http://www.photopix.ch/gu...7&Itemid=8

Prince started using this guitar in 1980. Its unmistakeable funk rhythm sound has graced just about every Prince recording since. Amazing when you take into account the fact that this guitar was a cheap alternative to Fenders Telecaster model.

Prince fell in love with its quirky looks and honking funk tone and has never let it out of his sight for long. He has several of these guitars, most of which have had the necks replaced over the years due to the fact that he has worn them out!

Even some of the guitars with replaced necks are starting to look worn – a clear indication of just how much Prince loves these guitars.

In recent years Prince has changed the pickups in his Hohners, he now has Australian made "Kinman" pickups (these are noiseless pickups but are still passive and retain that vintage sound). But for a long, long time the pickups were standard. With the Hohner being a ‘cheap’ guitar, the pickups weren’t exactly quiet. Noisy pickups combined with Prince’s love of ‘Boss’ effects pedals made for a sound engineers nightmare !

The guitar is beautiful! Does anyone know how much a custom guitar like this costs? Those pics - there's nothing quite like a man who can play guitar!

Parade Outtakes

Tracklist:

01. Little Girl Wendy's Parade 2:07

"Christopher Tracy's Parade" was originally recorded as this outtake. The song is basically the same but with a reference to Wendy's guitar (rhymes with "car" in the next line) as opposed to Tracy's piano. Incidentally, Prince sings "little girl Wendy's parade" in "Kiss" right before the third verse.

Everyone come behold little girl Wendy's parade
The show will proceed unless it should rain strawberry lemonade

02. New Position 2:16 Originally from the Controversy era

03. I Wonder U 1:33

04. Under The Cherry Moon 2:51

05. There's Others Here With Us 2:38

*Prince's experimental frame of mind is evident on this track, a dark, strange number with a stark instrumentation made up of tribal-like drumming and various sound effects, such as someone weeping. Prince's vocals are harsh and confused, matching the nightmarish lyrics mentioning death and suicide. Recorded during the Parade sessions, it confirms Prince's belief the spirit lives on after death.

It's strange how your mind works when Love is in power
One learns 2 care and appreciate a flower
What makes others want 2 change your mind?
All the things I've seen, life is so sublime

06. Life Can Be So Nice 3:08

07. Sometimes It Snows In April 6:41

08. Old Friends 4 Sale 3:30

*This slow bluesy classic is one of Prince's most autobiographical songs in which he sings about Steve Fargnoli, Wendy Melvoin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the late bodyguard Chick Huntsberry. A somber mood is established from an eerie slightly discordant synth with a piano the main accompaniment. Recorded during the Parade sessions, two versions exist, with one including Clare Fischer's orchestra. It was revised in 1991.

The sun set in my heart this afternoon
4 2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow
In Uptown when winter's alarmin',

This song I originally heard a few times on 104 WDKX back in 85, it was played as a PROMO. I really believe Prince might have released it as such, instead of it being 'leaked'
I had it on tape the same time I added the Black album boot to when it was 'leaked' to the underground. I love(d) this song, it's so personal, so much feeling and history behind it versus the version released on the Vault cd which is so overworked/destroyed impersonal and just not enjoyable. Like Hello, Old Friends 4 Sale is recounting some experiences that happened near the end at the end of the Purple Rain era/tour. His 1st real move toward a jazz feel. Piano, bass, drums with use of the brush and some strings.

Old Friends 4 Sale
Get em while their still hot
Watch out they'll kiss U till they get what U got
And they'll show U the friends that their not
Old Friends 4 Sale

09. All My Dreams 7:12

Welcome, this is where I live
This is where I dream my dreams

10. Girls & Boys 5:37

11. Love Or Money 4:10 Sung in Prince, not Camille, voice

Nothing comes 4 free now
If U want 2 be with me now
What's it gonna be now?

12. Heaven 7:04

*12. Heaven (recorded in France summer '84), this whimsical track was recorded in May of 1985 but was never placed on any configuration of Parade. Prince plays the main "carnivalesque" theme on the organ, alternating with a different figure, played on synth sounding like a harp. The lyrics reflect Prince's belief that heaven can be a place on earth.

Heaven will be here on earth
If we just try 2 love

- An Honest Man

Complete instrumental version of the song, from Under the Cherry Moon movie & an accapella lyrical version

- Neon Telephone Parade outtake later given to Three OClock 3:52

Sometimes her pride is like a big tall building
It hides the street that leads 2 a sweet mystery

^ I have that very vinyl version at home, in Ireland, was one of my first ever vinyl records, and your nick was my fav track off it, along with "All My Dreams" which ran a close second. "Old Friends 4 Sale" is quite possibly my fav song ever, it is haunting on this Charade album...

Wendy talked about a lot of music they made with Prince that was very simple like Sometimes It Snows In April

I wonder what a stripped down set of the music sounds like

I could hear Old Friends 4 Sale along with Sometimes It Snows in April

When I think about Prince's unrelased stuff, I'm glad to see so many brilliant songs... but I'm also sad that they didn't make it into any album. I mean, Old Friends 4 Sale, All My Dreams... certainly among his best stuff, but unknown to the general public (I don't count the Old Friends 1998 version, which is much inferior to the original, in my opinion).

opps, I didnt read all the posts before posting myself...the other interesting track on this is "Theres others here With Us" especially if you listen to it on headphones in the dark. Apart from "All My Dreams" (which is actually a very sad song in an up-tempo beat) Charade is the angst ridden twin of Parade, SOTT was a double anyway, then Black Album V Lovesexy...many of the other out-takes of this time, including what many call "Moonbeam Levels" have this dark side about them...Raises the question, did Prince change after the Black album episode? Has he ever come near this sort of quality since?

To be honest, it is the first time I have ever looked at it from this angle...

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I'm with U now that we know the full effect of the era and all the unreleased music it's bittersweet

Prince was moving sooo fast to the next project he could just settle and put thing in good musical perspective. They definately rushed the Romance 1600 album, it feel short of what we got on the Glamorous Life album. then the Family music,

But more than anything, the Flesh recordings / Junk Music / the slew of instrumentals similar to Venus de Milo & Alexa de Paris, and still in this time period all the Dream Factory recordings

All My Dreams Heaven & Old Friends 4 Sale are my 3 fav

I quite agree,

4 1 the SOTT band didn't have much 2 do with those songs that were Dream Factory outtakes

Dr Fink

Sheila E

Eric Leeds

some Atlanta Bliss

played with the Dream Factory music/Revolution

and As well as they represented, I think the finished work of the Dream Factory would have taken Prince's music to a more 'muturing level'

"Kiss" is a 1986 song by Prince and the Revolution, from the album Parade. Kiss started as a short acoustic demo, about a minute in length, with one verse and the chorus. Prince gave the song to the funk band Mazarati for their debut album. Mazarati and producer David Z. drastically reworked the song, giving it its unique raw funk and oddly effective stripped-down minimalist sound. When Mazarati delivered the song to Prince, he was amazed at their work and decided to take back the song for himself. He replaced their lead vocal, added the guitar break in the chorus and edited the song to its present form.

Mazarati were credited for their backing vocals, which Prince left intact. He added the song at the last minute to Parade. Despite Warner Bros. not wanting to release it as a single, Kiss became Prince's third number-one U.S. hit following 1984's highly successful "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy". It was also a big hit across the Atlantic, reaching #6 on the UK Singles Chart. The song won Prince another Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, and was nominated for Best R&B Song. The song has become a staple at Prince's concerts and is usually sung partially by the audience.

The 12" single of the song is an extension of the album track. The extended section is based on the funky guitar line and contains much fuller instrumentation than the main track, including bass, keys and horns. New lyrics are present from Prince with Jill Jones that ends with a humorous dialogue between a wife and her husband watching Prince on television. The B-side of Kiss was the funky "¢¾ or $" ("Love or Money"), sung in a processed, higher-pitched vocal, which Prince would later use for his Camille material. The song relates to the theme in Under the Cherry Moon and a bit of the song was heard in the film, as was a bit of the extended version of Kiss. The extended Kiss was included on 2006's Ultimate but "¢¾ or $" has oddly never been re-released.

Kiss

Kiss arranged by David Z
background voice by Mazarati

Uh!
U don't have 2 be beautiful 2 turn me on
I just need your body, baby, from dusk till dawn
U don't need experience 2 turn me out
U just leave it all up 2 me, I'm gonna show U what it's all about

CHORUS:
U don't have 2 be rich 2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool 2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your... kiss

U got 2 not talk dirty, baby, if U wanna impress me
U can't be 2 flirty, mama, I know how 2 undress me (Yeah)
I want 2 be your fantasy, maybe U could be mine
U just leave it all up 2 me, we could have a good time

CHORUS

Yes, oh
I think I wanna dance, uh
Gotta, gotta, oh
Little Girl Wendy's Parade
Gotta, gotta, gotta

Women, not girls, rule my world, I said they rule my world
Act your age, mama, not your shoe size, maybe we could do the twirl
U don't have 2 watch Dynasty 2 have an attitude, uh
U just leave it all up 2 me, my love will be your food (Yeah)

U don't have 2 be rich 2 be my girl
U don't have 2 be cool 2 rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm compatible with!
I just want your extra time and your... kiss
