Around the World in a Day era 1985

Around the World in a Day 4.22.1985 © 1985 Paisley Park

chapter 6 Hangover p74 Possessed

...he now opened himself more to genuine exchange of ideas.

Prince previewed the album for Warner bros.
during a ceremonious listening party
for about 20 company officials
in early February 1985 in Los Angeles.
Joni Mitchell and Prince's father John L. Nelson
were among the special guests present.
Attendees were seated on the floor of a large conference room,
and as the high pitched flute that begins "Around the World in A Day"
lilted from the speakers,
Prince & Lisa walked in holding flowers;
the whole scene was according to one attendee very Haight Ashbury

-Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince p 77

Overall, the album was not as radio-friendly as 1999 or Purple Rain,
but it still had two U.S. top 10 hits,
went double platinum and was an important step in Prince's musical evolution, incorporating new instruments and musical styles.

THE ELECTRIFYING MOJO (1986)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the eve of his birthday in 1986, Prince gave a surprise interview to legendary Detroit disc jockey the Electrifying Mojo. He had never offered a live radio interview before. Of the experience, Mojo later said:

"I had no idea he was going to call. I had no list of questions or anything like that. First I talked to Billy Sparks and he said, 'Hey Mojo! Prince wants to talk to you. You got a minute?' I said, 'Do I have a minute? Give me a minute to make sure we have a tape on,' and Prince says, 'Hey Mojo! What's happening? This is Prince.' If I hadn't heard Billy Sparks' voice prior to that, I may have said, 'Yeah, right.'"

The following is the text of the spoken interview, as transcribed by Rose Gardner on the Emancipation mailing list.

MOJO: Let's talk about the album, Around The World In A Day... which I think was one of the greatest albums.

PRINCE: My favorite!

MOJO: It's absolutely my favorite, without question. Tunes like "Around The World In A Day," "Paisley Park." What type of mood were you in when you recorded that album?

PRINCE: Yeah, I sorta had an f-you attitude, meaning that I was making something for myself and my fans. And the people who supported me through the years -- I wanted to give them something and it was like my mental letter.

And those people are the ones who wrote me back, telling me that they felt what I was feeling. Record sales and things like that...it really doesn't matter, ya know. It keeps a roof over your head, and keeps money in all these folks' pockets that I got hangin' around here! (laughs) It basically stems from the music, and I'm just hoping that people understand that money is one thing but soul is another. That's all we're really trying to do, you know? Idon't know.

I wouldn't mind if I just went broke, you know, 'cuz as long as I can play this type of thing and come here, ya know. There were a lot of people there tonight and they turned the lights on and I looked up...it brings tears to your eyes because it's just -- you can feel the love in the room, ya know? And that means more than money. I could just go on for hours...I don't know, I just have fun, and I'm thankful to be alive, ya know?

Around the World in A Day
Cello Oud Fingercymbals & Darbuka perf. by David Coleman Tamborine by Jonathan Melvoin, background vocals by David C Susannah-Jonathan Melvoin & the Revolution.

Recorded at Paisley Park by Susan Rogers & David Leonard

their is an unreleased version with a bass line

The track was first written and recorded by David Coleman (Lisa Coleman's brother) in June, 1984, when given two days of studio time as a birthday gift from Prince. When Prince heard the resulting track, he loved it and wanted to include it on his next album. He re-recorded the track and made some musical and lyrical changes. Basic tracks for Prince's version were recorded on 16 September, 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA.

Around The World In A Day

Open your heart, open your mind
A train is leaving all day
A wonderful trip through our time
And laughter is all U pay

Around the world in a day, oh!
Around the world in a day

Now dig...
Loneliness already knows U
There ain't no reason 2 stay
Come here, take my hand, I'll show U
I think I know a better way, y'all

Around the world in a day, ow!
(Listen 2 me now)
Around the world in a day
All the babies sing it now

Ooh la, la
Ooh la, la, la, la
No, sha, sha
No, no shouting every day (No shouting every day)
No shouting (No shouting)
No, no shouting
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha

The little one will escort U
2 places within your mind
(The former is red, white, and blue)
Former is red, white, and blue!
(The latter is a purple climb)
The latter is a purple - come on and climb!

Around the world in a day, sugar (Oh, baby)
Around the world in a day
Come on, say it!
Around the world in a day
Say papa, I think I wanna dance!

(In summer she's sweeter)

Around the world in a day {repeat to fade}
Oh yeah!
All the little babies sing around the world
A government of love and music boundless in its unifying power {fade out}
A nation of art 2 production
Sharing ideas, a shower of flowers

No offense Oldfriends4sale, but u've been doing this 4 what? 2 years? And as I was wondering how the threads kept being updated after all this time, I realized u were just re-creating 'em again & again, so... can't we just stop this (or at least limit ourself 2, I don't know, one thread a month)?

Thanks, and peace wink

Maybe the threads could be made permanantly accessible up front. That might be a cool idea. The threads on an album/era offer a lot more Prince-culture perspective with pics, comments, and opinions and such.

Truth be told every time there is more information added, more pictures that weren't there from the last time. People add their stories information or photos

You're saying 'can't we..." or "limit ourself"

Sure let's read more threads about who Prince is screwing or if his hair is real lol

Also the threads most of the time are never 'completed' I don't know how they lock where you can't post anymore, but a lot of these never even get 1/2 the song/musician/images/history information posted.

Yep, he sure was on that "When Doves Cry" craze. Even The Family album got 1/2 of its bass tracks omitted, I wouldn't think it was such a big deal until I heard the unreleased versions for some of the songs drool

This may be sacriliedge but i'd like to hear WDC with the bassline to compare, I still think it would sound good if not better.

the unique thing about When Doves Cry is it has so much tom drum action, there is a bass line formed by them. Another bass guitar on top of that wold be like two bass lines.

Novi Novog

Music: Eclectic, High strung instrumental quartet Novi Novog and her viola have been heard and seen on recordings, films and concert stages all over the world. She is one of LA's top session musicians, with a long list of credits including solos on Prince's "Purple Rain" and "Raspberry Beret," The Doobie Brothers' "Black Water", and album appearances for such diverse artists as Shaun Colvin, Bonnie Raitt, Terrance Trent D'Arby, Carly Simon, 10,000 Maniacs, Cher, James Taylor, Spinal Tap, Madonna, Tom Petty and Tangerine Dream. Her touring credits include such names as Frank Zappa, The Doobie Brothers, Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Warnes. A valley girl from North Hollywood, CA, Novi began playing piano at age four. When she was eight, she took up the violin, then moved on to viola. As part of the American Youth Symphony, Novi studied under Mehli Mehta, then attended California Institute of the Arts on scholarship under Louis Kievman, where she received the American String Teachers Award. Novi has recorded several albums with her own groups - Freeway Philharmonic (Sheffield Lab), Chunky, Novi & Ernie featuring her cousin Lauren Wood (Warner Bros. Records) and Sumner (Elektra/Asylum). Novi combines the background and training of the most intense classical disciplines with the improvising and listening abilities of a great jazz musician. She is one of the most versatile musicians in the Los Angeles scene, equally at home in classical, jazz, pop or rock

There is an extended version(4 those that don't know) with an opening with sounds of a beach/park scene sounds of seagulls, girls laughing and a pretty good guitar solo
I always use this version instead of the album cut when listening 2 the album

Released May 24, 1985
Recorded The Warehouse, St. Louis Park; 1984

Initial tracking took place on 9 March, 1984 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA.

Paisley Park

There is a park that is known
4 the face it attracts
colorful people whose hair
On 1 side is swept back
The smile on their faces
It speaks of profound inner peace
Ask where they're going
They'll tell U nowhere
They've taken a lifetime lease
On Paisley Park

chorus:
The girl on the seesaw is laughing
4 love is the color
This place imparts (Paisley Park)
Admission is easy, just say U
Believe and come 2 this
Place in your heart
Paisley Park is in your heart

There is a woman who sits
All alone by the pier
Her husband was naughty
And caused his wife so many tears
He died without knowing forgiveness
And now she is sad, so sad
Maybe she'll come 2 the park
And forgive him
And life won't be so bad
In Paisley Park

chorus

See the man cry as the city
Condemns where he lives
Memories die but taxes
He'll still have 2 give
(who) Whoever said that elephants
were stronger than mules?
Come 2 the park
And play with us
There aren't any rules
In Paisley Park

chorus repeated 2 times

your heart, your heart
Paisley Park
your heart, your heart, your heart (sing, sing it)
Paisley Park
Paisley Park
Paisley Park

Paisley Park" is a song by Prince and The Revolution.[1] It was the first single in both the UK and Australia to be released from their 1985 album, Around the World in a Day. The song has a psychedelic feel, similar to some of The Beatles' later work with echoed guitar and finger cymbals. The lyrics describe a Utopian place that one can feel in their heart, despite the chaos of the world around them. "Paisley Park" was recorded before Purple Rain was completed, indicating the new direction Prince wanted to take after the success of that album and film. Violin on the song was played by Novi Novog, and Wendy & Lisa provide backing vocals.
