The Black Album CD performed by another band/artist?

I've tried this a few years ago already, but no one could help me out back then. So i'm trying again today! wink

In the early nineties I once ran into a CD of the Black Album at a recordstore in Leiden, the Netherlands. I was extremely excited, because all i had was a very bad quality incomplete copy on tape.

Anyway, i ran to the counter of the shop to listen. It turned out that it wasn't the actual Black Album by Prince, it was a band or persons' effort to meticulously recreate the complete album!

Although it was well done, i was extremely disappointed that it wasnt the real deal, and i didnt purchase the CD.

Years later of course i started to regret not buying it then. Ive never been able to find a copy since.

Does anyone have this cd, or information about who performed this CD? Any information on this would be very much appreciated!

around 1993 or 1995 i bought the vinyl copy of it for 80 German Mark (round 40 €) because i thought and was told by the owner of the recordstore it was a copy of the first pressing of the black album - lol lol lol

i never played the vinyl - until..

around 2005 i opened the copy .... and were pissed eek

I have it as audio files somewhere, and I think it's brilliant! NOt as in a good album to listen to, but it's such a good reverse engineering of all the musical ideas on the album done in a much cheaper sounding MIDI kind of way.

I used to do that for fun myself, recreate the music to Prince songs I wanted to figure out the beat or rhythm structure of. But not on that level, with vocals too!

Yeah I am pretty sure that is the one I had in my hands back then!

Will start the hunt now that I've got some more details. Thanks!

I also bought it in the early 90's. I only discovered it wasn't Prince when I played it at home. I was disappointed, of course, but still I played it a lot. It sounded good. In 1994, when the Prince record was offically released, I got rid of the copy.

I bought it in vinyl, and it had a sticker that said: "I own The Black Album". lol

Recently I've read from Per Nilsen that the album was played by a German band. I don't know its name.

I bought it in the early 90ies on vinyl and CD. All the record stores in my area here in germany had it. The vocals were awful. But it contained a nice "I own the black album" - sticker. lol

I was discussing recreating a Prince song with my bandmate yesterday. It seems like a fun (and probably educational) thing to do!

The cover version was released by a small record label from Frankfurt called TNT. Back then it was the label boss Ralf Thomas who came up with the idea of rerecording the whole album with some musicians from Frankfurt and a flown in vocalist from NY in order to make it sound more authentic.

Benny Braun, a German producer, composer, arranger and former drummer of TTD's Band "The Touch", was mainly responsible for the musical realisation of the project.

If anyone has a link to this version, please let me know! I'd love to hear it just to say I did lol . It seems like it might be a hilarious experience......

If you have a CD copy & wouldn't mind making a link for it, that would be awesome too biggrin
