Does Rave Un2 the Year 2000 DVD have overdubs?

I was curious if anybody knew if Rave Un2 the Year 2000 has overdubs or sweetening? Its hard to tell since it was a live event, but the DVD came out later...

You're new to Prince, right?

It's OFFICIAL, therefore it's incomplete, chopped, not in correct order, overdubbed.

In a word: a turd.

Wit the rare exception of TV performances beamed out live, Prince has final cut on all his performances and ALL camera feeds are checked and the audio overdubbed by staffers to Prince's explicit instruction prior to the network in question being given the ok to air it.

Fact.

I don't even think it was live. I think it was recorded in October or something and broadcast on New Year's Eve.

It was actually filmed over two days in December, the 18th and 19th if I remember correct.

yep!! They even edited out completely Jonny Lang's part completely!! I understand why as Jonny smoked Prince in a guitar battle. I was looking forward the most to seeing this again but when I watched the dvd it was spliced out!! I couldnt believe it!! So disappointed!!

Nor do I. If anyone has some real examples, please share.

I think some are getting confused. 'Overdubbing' refers to going back and adding/re-recording instrumental parts that they either missed or stuffed up. It's not really the same as 'editing', nor refers to whether it was broadcast live or not. Rave 2000 was not broadcast live. It was recorded in a very controlled environment in mid-December 1999 (I remember reading stories of Prince doing certain tracks 3 or 4 times until he was happy with them), and yes, it is heavily edited (2 nights worth of material down to 2 hours). And yes, I agree that it's kind of lame that they faked New Years Eve in order for it to appear genuinely live lol

But having said all that, the audio of each song is pretty much as it was performed, straight from the soundboard. I don't hear any audio trickery, other than between track transitions. Again, if anyone has examples of parts that have been added/re-recordeded to hide mistakes etc. (which is really what overdubbing is), please share!

A lot of fans love to complain about Prince's overdubbing of live material, yet he does it a lot less than is often believed. Normally when he does it, it's very obvious and used more as an effect than a crutch - "Days Of Wild (Live In Montreal)" springs to mind. The Purple Rain album is largely a live album full of overdubs and yet no one seems to care about that lol

Editing, well that's a different story lol. Prince loves to butcher his live releases. Release a full-length concert DVD muddafunka!!

Hmmm... I'm curious - where you at the concert/s at Paisley Park, or was this broadcast on the pay-per-view? There is a Johny Lang bit in the DVD Bonus Material...

You mean the one from the audience? Maybe. I guess that's a grey-area one, as it's not really affecting Prince or the NPG's performance, which is what I'm talking about.

I don't remember any overdubs on that show... what's up with all these "yes, obviously" posts?

They did visually "overdub" the video of Greatest Romance over a performance though... if memory serves. I'll have to check.

I can't be bothered watching it right now, but I think it was half the music video then half the live performance.

i don't agree with toejam...

there's only 1 live album - ONA which DOES have overdubs (culled from loads of performances). Purple Rain was never billed as a live album...so the fact that base tracks are made from live cuts means nothing...

it wouldn't surprise me if it is dubbed to f***. it's so pants i've only watched it once...so i don't know but the splicing already sounds like it has gone a long way to adding band aids...

boots are the best...

Got my mojo working...it just don't work on you!

i dont remember anything that comes across as being obviously overdubbed at all, and as a musician i notice these things. also being that they supposedly played things more than once there is also the chance that if it seems like something isnt quite right that possibly a visual bit is edited in from one performance and the audio from another. hate to break the news people, but even if it was overdubbed in spots, thats fairly common practice for a commercialy released convert video. and before you start saying 'so and so' doesnt overdub their releases, yes, there are a some that do release them as is, but most dont.

Very interesting stuff. I figured it had overdubs, but I hadn't known about the pre-taping. I've also got a Prince and the Revolution Live VHS which is a show from 1985, which is awesome, and I don't think that's been touched.

So to make this even more interesting, what about the Anotherloverholenyohead video?

This is what I was thinking of. Splicing a studio track and a live track seems pretty overdub-ish to me.

I haven't seen it for awhile, but Prince screams before one of his guitar solos, and there's another scream that also sounds like Prince, on top of it, much louder, drowning out what appears to be the live one (which may have been slightly strained?).
