Controversy's sell-out cousin. I love this record sooo much. Love the colors and the vibe.

I do see this album as a continuation of what began on Controversy from the look to the sound, but its execution is just way more grand.

sounds like a Prince song: Sell Out Cousin

Yes for me the image/sound connection started with the 2nd album where he is sitting what looks like an attic room on the bed with the guitar in the Dawn. That image looks like the music of 4 U & Prince sounds. In the suburbs.

Dirty Mind took it Uptown and took us back to his room when the sun was going down

Controversy continued with that but via Private Joy Do Me Baby but took his sexuality & politics into the streets.

1999 followed (Prince on his bed with the watercolors afterdark) with the neons. He has a loft in the city experiencing life sex while grappling with politics (not God yet) really

Still hanging with his gang of Purple Hippies

B-side Original: "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?"
Released December 18, 1982 (original)

1999" is a song by Prince, the title track from his 1982 album 1999. The song is one of Prince's best-known, and a defining moment in his rise to superstar status. The apocalyptic yet upbeat party anthem saw chart success in 1983, however it didn't make it into the Top 40 on the first attempt, but did upon re-release after "Little Red Corvette" hit the Top 10, peaking at #12 in the US and #25 in the UK (reaching #2 in the UK when re-released in 1985). [1] The album version of the song starts with a slowed-down voice, reassuring the listener "Don't worry, I won't hurt you. I only want you to have some fun." Prince shares lead vocals on the track with members of his band The Revolution, namely Dez Dickerson, Lisa Coleman and Jill Jones. Originally conceived to be a three-part harmony, it was later decided to separate out the voices that started each verse.

1999

Don't worry, I won't hurt U
I only want U 2 have some fun

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was Judgment Day
The sky was all purple, there were people runnin' everywhere
Tryin' 2 run from the destruction, U know I didn't even care

Cuz they say 2000 zero zero party over, oops, out of time!
So 2night I'm gonna party like it's 1999!

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, so sue me if I go 2 fast
But life is just a party and parties weren't meant 2 last
War is all around us, my mind says prepare 2 fight
So if I gotta die, I'm gonna listen 2 my body 2night

Yeah, they say 2000 zero zero party over, oops, out of time!
So 2night I'm gonna party like it's 1999! (Yeah, yeah)

People, let me tell U somethin'
If U didn't come 2 party, don't bother knockin' on my door
I got a lion in my pocket and, baby, he's ready 2 roar (Yeah)
Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day (Oh)
But before I let that happen, I'll dance my life away

Oh, they say 2000 zero zero party over, oops, out of time!
(We're runnin' out of time)
So 2night I'm gonna party like it's 1999! (We gonna, we gonna, oh!)

Say it one more time
2000 zero zero party over, oops, out of time! (No, no)
So 2night I'm gonna party like it's 1999! (We're gonna, we gonna)

Alright, 1999
U say it, 1999
1999 (1999)

Don't stop, don't stop, say it one more time
2000 zero zero party over, oops, out of time! (Yeah, yeah)
So 2night I'm gonna party like it's 1999! (We gonna, we're gonna)

Yeah, 1999 (1999)
Don't U wanna go? (1999)
Don't U wanna go? (1999)
We could all die any day (1999)
I don't wanna die, I'd rather dance my life away (1999)
Listen 2 what I'm tryin' 2 say
Everybody, everybody say party!
Come on now, U say it (Party!)
That's right, everybody say
(Party!) {repeat in BG}
Can't run from Revelation, no!
Sing it 4 your nation, y'all!
Dreamin' when U're singin', baby!
Say the telephone a-ringin', mama, now!
Come on, come on, U say
Everybody, 2 times
Work it down 2 the ground, I'm sayin'
(Oh baby, say it again)
(Oh, shake your body, baby!)
That's right, come on, sing the song
That's right, everybody say
Got a lion in my pocket mama, say!
Ah, and he's ready 2 roar!
Yeah!

Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?

Those shots of Lisa & JJ playing keyboards together were erotic as hell!

It's funny how just playing the keyboards looked really sexual and lesbionic.

I'm sure it was Prince's idea, and it's one of the sexiest things I've ever seen in a Music Video.

Let's Pretend We're Married
Directed by: Bruce Gowers
Released 1982
From Album: 1999

The B-side, "Irresistible Bitch", received equal airplay and so qualified to chart alongside the A-side. The track was actually written and recorded in 1981, and segues from the song "Feel U Up", which was re-recorded in 1986 for the Camille project. The original version of "Irresistible Bitch" has a much rougher vocal, and is an organ-driven song. The 1983 remake has more percussion, both live drums and drum machines, along with bell-like keyboards and vocal backup from Wendy & Lisa. The lyrics are the familiar Prince theme of a jilted lover who treats his woman well, but gets treated badly in return. The song was performed on the Purple Rain tour, and once again with The New Power Generation, for their 1992–1993 tours.

Irresistable Bitch
Lisa Coleman & Wendy Melvoin on backing vocals
Turn it down a little

Every Friday night I call your butt up on the phone
A deeper voice answers and says U're not at home
Now if U think that I'm a fool who'll go 4 any line
Then honey, put down all your money, U win every time Irresistible bitch - I love the way U walk
Irresistible bitch - I love the way U talk
Irresistible bitch - And I really dig the way U kiss
Irresistible - Oh mama, I wish I could resist

All my partners ask me why I take so much abuse
Why am I so faithful, honey? Why are U so loose?
They say why am I the one who never gets 2 take U home?
But they don't know the things U do 2 me when we're alone

Irresistible bitch - I love the way U walk
Irresistible bitch - I love the way U talk
Irresistible bitch - I really dig the way U kiss
Irresistible - Oh mama, I wish I could resist
Hurt me, hurt me!

Oh, ho, ho, ho {x2}

Stole all my honey
Played it off like it was a joke
If stealing all my honey, baby, keep U by my side
Bleed me till I'm broke

Hell if I know why I let U drive my car
Don't I know that walkin' won't get me very far?
Sure, I know that cryin' over U is just in vain
But all things I lose don't add up 2 all the things I gain (Ooh)

Irresistible bitch - I love the way U walk
Irresistible bitch - I love the way U talk
Irresistible bitch - And I really dig the way U kiss, ain't it a shame?
Irresistible - Mama, mama, I wish I could re...
Hurt me!

Oh, ho, ho, ho {x2}

Stole all my honey
Played it off like it was a joke
Stealing all my honey, baby, keep U by my side
Bleed me till I'm broke

Everybody, everybody dance, everybody, everybody
Everybody, everybody dance, everybody (Oh, ho, ho, ho)

(Irresistible bitch) {repeat 2 fade}

Everybody, everybody dance, everybody

Irrestistable Bitch is better than anything on the 1999 album, shame its a b-side.

I like 1999, but the album for the most part always feels a bit cold to me. Its very synth pop, not much guitar aside from title track and little red corvette. Songs go on a bit too long sometimes also in my opinion. Prefer the whole album live, Delirious on the Lovesexy tour is exactly how id love it to be on recording. Something in the water live in the 80s also came across better than on studio.

Automatic is a song by Prince from his 1982 album, 1999. It was released as a 7" single only in Australia, with the B-side of "Something In the Water (Does Not Compute)".

A promotional music video directed by Bruce Gowers, who previously directed the "1999" video as well as videos from Queen, Rod Stewart and John Mellencamp, was produced for the song, which features band mates Lisa Coleman and Jill Jones whipping Prince in a simulated S&M session. The video was not released through conventional outlets but circulates amongst collectors.

Recorded Sunset Sound and Minneapolis 1982

Automatic

U ask me if I love U
It's automatic
Cuz every time U leave me, I die
That's automatic 2

U ask me 2 forgive U
When U know I'm just an addict
So stop the music, baby
U know U're all I wanna do

CHORUS:
(Hey!)
A-u-t-o-matic
Just tell me what 2 do (Oh)
A-u-t-o-matic
I'm so in love with U

U ask me if I'll kiss U
It's automatic
And if U cry, me cry, boo hoo
That's automatic 2, ooh

I would never leave U
No matter what U do
So stop the music, baby
U know I'm an automatic fool

(Hey!)
A-u-t-o-matic
Just tell me what 2 do (Until I stop)
A-u-t-o-matic (Oh)
I'm so in love with U (Oh ooh)

I'll rub your back 4ever
It's automatic (A-u-t-o-matic)
I'll look 4 a needle in a haystack
That's automatic 2, ooh (A-u-t-o-matic)

I'll go down on U all night long
It's automatic (U will?) (Yes I will, babe)
And even when I'm right, I'll be wrong
That's automatic 2 (A-u-t-o-matic)

(CHORUS) {repeat 3 times in BG}
Tell me what 2 do, baby
Mmm
So in love with U, yeah
Tell me what 2 do, baby
So in love with U, baby yeah
Alright, alright
Tell me what 2 do, baby
Yeah, yeah, yeah!

(Hey!)
A-u-t-o-matic {x2}

Come on, baby
A-u-t-o-matic
Tell me what 2 do
A-u-t-o-matic
So in love with U

Don't say that no man has ever tasted your ice cream
Baby, U're the purple star of the night supreme
U'll always be a virgin
4 no man deserves your love
I only pray that when U dream
I'm the one U dream of
I pray that when U dream
U dream of how we kiss
Not with our lips, but with our souls
Stop me if I bore U
Why is it that I think we'd be so good in bed?
Can U hear me?
Why do I love U so much?
It's so strange, I'm more comfortable around U when I'm naked
Can U hear me?
I wonder if U have any mercy, don't torture me

Stop the music, baby
Automatic fool!

When it comes 2 U, I'm automatic, baby
There's no one else like me
I'm the best U'll ever find
No one else could understand U
U're 2 complex
They say nothing's perfect
But they don't know U
It's automatic 2
Can U hear me?

(A-u-t-o-matic) {repeat in BG}

Honey, I'm so addicted 2 your pleasure
I'm addicted 2 your pain
It's automatic
Automatically insane
Undress me

Hey!
A-u-t-o-matic, oh no, no, no, no
A-u-t-o-matic {x2}
Hey!

Fasten your seat belts
Prepare 4 takeoff

I can dream of how U kissed me
Not with your lips, but with your soul
With U I'm never bored
Talk 2 me some more
I can hear U
I'm going 2 have 2 torture U now

How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?

Initial tracking for How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore took place at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA on 26 April, 1982 (the day after Free, two days before Something In The Water (Does Not Compute).

B side
I keep your picture beside my bed
And I still remember everything U said
I always thought our love was so right, I guess I was wrong
I always thought U'd be by my side mama, now U're gone

What I wanna know, baby
If what we had was good
How come U don't call me anymore, yeah?
Oh anymore

(Listen...)
I still light the fire on a rainy night
I still like it better when U're holding me tight
(OK, now umm...)
Everybody said, everybody said that we should never part, ooh yeah
(I always said that we were kinda cute 2gether myself)
Tell me baby, baby, baby, why, why'd U wanna go and break my heart?
(Why'd U wanna do it, baby?)

All I wanna know, baby
If what we had was good
How come U don't call me anymore, yeah?
Why don't U call me girl?
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Sometimes it feels like I'm gonna die
If U don't call me mama, girl U gotta try
Down on my knees, beggin' U please, please! ... oh yeah

Why can't U call me sometime, baby?
It's just one lousy dime, baby
Why can't U call me sometime?
Oh, no no
Why on Earth can't U just pick up the phone, yeah?
U know I don't like 2 be alone {fade out}
Why, why must U torture me baby?
Why U gotta treat me so bad?

9.) Lady Cab Driver
lady cab driver: Jill Jones

being a sessions vocalist for Prince she's probably on a lot of outtakes as well.

Jill Jones was born in a small town in Ohio to a black mother who worked as a fashion model and an Italian father who was a jazz drummer. Her mother’s second marriage meant the family moved to LA and Jill left home at 17 to try and become a singer. Her mother managed Teena Marie and Jill got a job as her backing singer --- she also wrote some songs for her. Jill met Prince on the 1980 Dirty Mind tour when Teena Marie was his support act. Prince nicknamed her the “white fox” and asked her to work with him.

She does co-vocals on 1999, Automatic and Lady Cab Driver and backing vocals on Free all off the 1999 album. On the Triple Threat Tour Prince was supported by Vanity 6 and Jill sang most of their vocals for them from behind a curtain. She also appeared in the videos for Automatic and Lady Cab Driver. She moved to Minneapolis and in 1983-84 Jill began work on her solo album.

mixed videos where the Time & or Vanity 6 members are cast along with noituloveR member or other people in the camp

I wish I could have been his PR man back then, I could play "Jamie Starr" make mysterious appearances at different spots etc

Yeah Especially with her vocal skills and her White Fox character it would have been perfect, the 1987 Jill Jones release as a protege didn't work with the era of SOTT

She should have had a a Controversy/1999 release a Purple Rain release and a Parade era release
