Prince: best blues songs / blues albums

Hi,

I just listened to "Blues on the Bayou" by B B King, and thought, damn, why isn't Prince doing a pure laid-back blues album... I know he has done this video (was it Undertaker?), and he has some nice blues songs - I like Joy in Repetition, not classic blues, but still, and on some of the aftershows he jams...

I think this would be great - Prince on guitar and mike, Allan Toissant and Dr. John on keys, and a southern rythm section... I want a laid-back groovy album, no "Jimi Hendrix guitar ecstasy..." lol

Who else votes for this ? biggrin biggrin biggrin And what are your favorite blues songs by Prince?

I would like him to do some blues as well- maybe some covers and compose more songs in the genre himself

I don't think he has any truly amazing blues songs, Zanalee is pretty good and so is The Ride. Those are my two favourites blues songs by him. Not classics by any means but pretty good anyway

-My vote for best blues Prince song is 5 Women because I like the intro and also the way Prince sings the song. The piano really hits.

5 Women is his best blues jam. The Vault is a pretty bluesy album too.

I love his version of "Red House". I also dig the slow blues acoustic version of "Alphabet Street".

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a brief slow blues acoustic version of "Kiss"?

My favorite blue-sy tracks are 'Papa' and 'Just A Little Lovin'(off of Carmen Electra's CD). The NPG ripped it on 'Just A Little Lovin'.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Yes there is. And one of Thieves in the Temple too by the way.
And I love Prince, John Lee Hooker, The Stones, Dylan, so yeah, a blues album by Prince that would be musical heaven!
I Like it There is more bluesrock, but still a favorite coz it reminds me of the Melkweg...

Just remembered something: the cd that goes with the 21 Nights photo book contains a wonderful Beggin Woman Blues.

Yeah, The Truth would be my fav bluesy album (particularly "Don't Play Me" and "The Other Side Of The Pillow").

But overall, my favourite would have to be The Ride.

For the sake of this thread, can someone define "blues"? Some of these submissions are all over the place.

-No for real, if we really want to 'dig in' the blues and Prince songs, how about 'I Wonder'?

-I say this because some may think it is too I don't know, but I hear nothing but blues with that song.

-The intro tells you that it is gonna be 'Koko Taylor' is singing this! biggrin

-Yes right, anthropologist Ernest Borneman, in his essay "The Roots of Jazz," identifies Africanism within the improvisational concept.

-"the African tradition aims at circumlocution rather than an exact definition. The direct statement is considered crude and unimaginative; the veiling of all contents in ever-changing paraphrases is considered the criterion of intelligence and personality." crysball
