Fans can complain. I've been a fan since 79, some things I love about Prince and some things I can't stand. Doesn't mean I'm not a fan! Just a realist.

Here's how you tell.

When Prince either: a) makes a song that you don't like or b) does something that you don't agree with....

a REAL fan will acknowledge that they don't like it or disagree, or make constructive, intelligent, mature points about why they don't like or why they don't agree...and then move on.

a HATER will bitch, moan, whine, cuss Prince out, make personal attacks on him, his band, and continuously blather on at any given opportunity about how everything since [insert random year] has sucked.... and NEVER stop going on about it, even in threads that have nothing to do with whatever they're complaining about.

Sadly, one of the problems here is that we have a few too many of the latter type...

Just goes to show, asking who is or what makes a true fan is impossible question, because it means something different to different people.

I'll tell you what I find funny.

When Prince opened up his own official forum there was a mass exodus from a section of the fan community over to it. There was a crowd of "fams" who only really wanted to talk about Prince at Princes house. I was a member their too and it was mostly threads about how great everything was.

At this point, the org had never been so peaceful. Activity didn't stop, but it because calmer. Threads became about the music, the only real thing we as fans are well placed to comment on. Differences of opinion was fine. There were no idolisation / swooning picture threads that read like a teen mag. Some could even say is because a little boring.

But when Prince closed the official forum, there was a mass exodus back to the org. All sorts of nothing threads started up and terms like "haters" and "naysayers" because the new language people on the org that didn't like everything. The venomous tongue and tone came WITH a small minority of fams, who spend their time pointing the finger at anyone else.

Oh, and the irony? One of the reasons given for the shut down of the official threads was because of the growing negative tone from the fams. So where is the real problem?

So are Prince's fans good/bad? That depends on your own outlook. All I know is that the fan base is a reflection of the artists own actions.

interesting way to look at it wink

Your a fan when:

1. Signed up for his websites.

2. Bought all his albums.

3. Went through hell to get some bootlegs.

4. Know his discography in order.

5. Know every protege.

6. How long his tours lasted.

7. Know what B-Sides are on specific singles.

8. Inheritate a trait from him.

9. Know all of his public women relationships.

10. When you can tell what era a random Prince pic is from.

Guilty !!!!

Also add to that, every Pop Chart place each released single an album got to.

Random Prince song comes on the radio - its "U Got the look"

My partner "Is that a Prince song"

Me "Yes, off the 1987 Sign o the Times album, it was the 3rd single and got to number 2 on the chart"

My partner "Uh thanks"

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I just finished responding to another thread where my comments and another poster's comments touched on this subject.

I consider myself a real fan. I'm not really a fanatic although I can be close to fanatical at times about Prince music lol

I tend to give Prince (and most people) the benefit of doubt because I have not walked in their shoes and its hard to REALLY know from the outside looking in.

I've learned in my years that things are not always as they seem -- like all that glitters ain't gold, you know?

PREACH ! lol sometimes people let thier love and obsession for something/someone blind them . i la la la loveeee me some prince . i get fanatical at times . lol

Hahahahaha, I do that too.

Like if "Kiss" comes on the radio, I'll start talking about the Mazarati demo, and how Prince took it back, and how they lost out on not only that, but "Jerk Out" as well, which became The Time's only #1, and how it was interesting that Pandemonium had production from Jam and Lewis and Jesse as well as Prince, and.....

Any excuse to launch into a tirade lol.

i like to say im a "real fan" although i have been a fan for almost a year (which is a very short period of time) i have fell in love with prince..no.. i dont know EVERY statistic about him.. but i love him(even though most think hes arrogant ect..) but honestly if we look at our selves, we too can be too... i guess im a fan because, i LOVE his music, listen to it everyday, i love watching him perform, and idk hes just great.. and we all have different ears.. theres no use in argueing about the "old" and "new: prince.. because its the same person.. different sound.. my favorite album is around the world in a day..but i enjoy most of his new work as well..

peace..and purple love!! prince

Owning the complete official works in physical form

Attending a minimum of 10 nights on the same tour

Owning "Strange Tales from the Purple Rain" album and saying "why did I bother?"

Attending every tour on your continent

Owning every Protege Paisley Park and WB record release

Be able to call off the exact playing length of every track on vinyl

Having met Prince on several occasions

Visted Paisley Park

Be able to fill a room wall to wall with Prince CDs.

Own an original black album.

Being that well placed with the above to make meaningful comment on Prince's portfolio of work.

Thats a fan. That should seperate the men from the boys and the women from the girls.

Everyone one else just "likes" Prince.....lol

Well, I’ve been a fan since that fateful Saturday back on June the 7th 1958. In fact I was there for the conception of our beloved lil’Prince. In fact, I was the one who convinced John and Maddie to get it on in a freezing cold October autumn in 1957. I immediately recognized how great the little baby was and went out to start an internet site called the-adventures-of-baby-prince@gopher. (Later Vinton Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee e-mailed me back in the 70s to ask how I did that internet thing and I allowed them to google the answers. The rest is, as they say, history).

Later I purchased all material Prince ever had any association with. If there was a Malawian single, I bought the Malawian single. If there was a slight variant on the cover of Purple Rain in the Swedish edition, I bought it. I even went out and bought the extremely rare Nauruan misprint of Lovesexy (you know, the one where Prince’s massive dick didn’t get airbrushed out). I owned one hundred and five original Black Albums (the one that says “U are my biggest realest fan Cravens” on the spine (later deleted in the repress, but if you own the original you can totally see it written there). I’ve seen every concert he has ever played. I’ve seen every concert his protégés ever had.

Hell, if he made a skid mark in those home sewed boxer shorts, I framed it. If he had a musical note he didn’t know where to put, I bought it and kept in in my locker. I owned pubic hair of every man and woman Prince ever slept with, and not just a “little” pubic hair. I used to take them out of their plastic wrapping at least once a year and caress them while I listened to everything Prince never released.

And I auctioned it all away in 2000 and gave all my earnings to Jehovah’s Witnesses, before joining myself. Now I live in Jehovah’s Witnesses Holy Hole.

So, I’m the realest fan ever.

fans that criticise shelby j are not real fans. by criticising her, you're criticising prince, and if you're criticising prince then consequently you are criticising Jehovah, and if you're criticising Jehovah then you are fated to be cast aside into the digital garden with the banished ones. so if i was you i'd drop the negativity and wanton hostility.

I have been a fan since 1977-I been to over 112 shows and 40 aftershowes-most of them I been in the front row.I sat and sleep in rain and snow for days for the front row.I own every note on vinyle and cd---I hate I-tunes and downloads I have to have the hard copy.I spend endless amount of money on bootlegs----I need EVERY NOTE the MAN MAKES.

He has NEVER made a bad song!I will talk to just about any that will listen about HIS music.

I have had a few words with HIM over the years-He does not know that I am alive.

If u met me u would never know I am a Prince Freak..I have turn on 100's of people 2 HIM though bootlegs--I hand them out 2 the non-Prince Fan!

HE lives in my DNA!!!!

There are no set criteria for REAL FANS - unmeasurable

FANS a shortened word for FANATIC meaning:

'A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause'

Didn't Prince say he didn't like using the word Fans but preferred Fams - relating to Family.

We are all FANS/FAMS of some description, because if we wasn't we wouldn't be on here !!

so, what is the answer 2 the question of U
