Because people wanna be infamous and on the headlines just because they killed a famous figure. Michael Jackson had death threats going as far back as 1970. I can imagine during Prince's most studious period that he got a lot of threats in his time especially when he became a major figure after 1983, 1984. It unfortunately comes with the territory.

I'm glad that he no longer has to deal with mega-fame (such as MJ had) and all the nastiness that comes with it. mad

For real? Yikes.

Man, Prince's memoirs, written by himself and without any preachiness, would be a fascinating read. Too bad it will never, ever happen. neutral

Too bad indeed! I bet he would have a treasure trove of anecdotes.

Because a lot of people are sick as fuck, basically.

I think just about all public figures get death threats at some point, that's one of the reasons they have security.

I don't know about the 80s, but these days every well known star gets tons of death threats... Lady Gaga, Rebecca Black, Justin Bieber, etc.. the internet and email makes that stuff too easy. Plus Prince was considered very controversial and outrageous back then..

People are as narrow minded now as they were then. But you had all these politicians and religious groups trying to use celebrities to draw attention to their own causes.

Usually the psychos get caught because they write letters and are kept track of. A lot of celebs hire private security companies to find out where these people live and their background, and try to make it subtle to stop contacting them, or else the cops will get involved.

There's a lot of people who lose the big picture and live in a dreamworld that involves a celeb of some sort. It's one thing to write fan fiction, but to actually believe it's another thing.

Lennon was killed because Mark Chapman read some book about Lennon and felt rage, because to him, he felt like a phony.

The scariest thing to me is what happened to Dimebag Darrell, in a club. A guy walked into their show, walked right on stage, and shot him point blank, then was killed. VH1 "Behind the Music" showed some of the footage from the concert. It's pretty chilling to watch.

Even though there's a perception of celebrities living in their own world, they still have one foot in reality. They know it's not just art, but a business of entertaining for a living. Michael Jackson might have cultivated an image that seemed a little too bizarre, but when you see "This Is It", he's a guy who sang and danced for a living and expected perfection, from himself and everyone around him.

Kubrick kept letters everyone sent him, even if he never wrote back, and had special boxes made for stalkers and psychos.

That's also why some entertainers will reach out to their fans, pose for photos, sign autographs, and be cordial. They don't want to be in ivory towers. In a way, that inaccessiblity also leads to people trying to climb the ivory tower. Springsteen tried to meet Elvis by jumping the fence at Graceland in the 70s, but was escorted off the property. Celebs can be obsessed fans, too. I don't know if the whole thing with Sherri Shepherd losing her cool on The View whe P showed up was for real or a bit.

Back in the day, celebs didn't have security except at red carpet events. They'd live in a brownstone, maybe some fans would be hanging out trying to get something signed, but they were usually kids or one paparazzi photographer.

Bob Dylan said he had to leave Woodstock because there were fans showing up INSIDE his house, and he had young kids. But he also took boxing, and knocked an obsessed fan out himself, who wouldn't leave his wife and kids alone.

The year after, in LA, Charles Manson had his "family" kill Sharon Tate and the others. In the mid 80s, someone showed up at a young actress' home and killed her, he found her address not on a star map, but through DMV.

If anything, that was the start of celebs getting security, because in LA, you have canyons where anyone could just crawl up and wind up in a celeb's backyard. Now they have state of the art stuff but every now and then you read about someone's home being broken into.

I once teched for a lovely Canadian piano player who insisted on having a guard in the back hall of the theatre, because she was convinced that she was going to one day be shot during a performance by an intruder from backstage. Of course this was not really based on anything, it was just her own premonition, but it just goes to show again that these public figures have concerns/worries that the rest of us, thankfully, don't have to think about.
