The New Breed fan club *cough cough* is lonnnnng gone now. Died a death back in '85.

You may be able to pick up a pack on eBay, I've seen a few in my time. Expect to pay top dolla for it though.

There was an address included on the early albums where you could write off for information.

Think it was something like 14 bucks a year - you got some postcards, a fold-out poster, a metal pin and a membership card. I think that was about it.

Prince's involvement with it was paper thin to say the least.

also: I swear my cassette was red or raspberry in color and had a more paisley like design on it...

also: wasn't it one of the very first tapes to have the clear plastic? (another being Motley Crew's 'Theater of pain' which had a similar design for the CD cover? fold out long box with a mini=LP sleeve for the cd?)

It's a very generalized statement for you to say the 'rest of Black radio' like you heard all of them across the nation. Like all black people think alike from coast to coast.

Why are you using Black radio and Black people interchangeably...and why do you think they wouldn't get marketed to the same way coast to coast?

Why do you think radio had individuality outside of the free form format, for that matter?

I'll explain it to you again - you grew up in one of the small markets that had a privately owned station catering to Black audiences. Your experience was unique. Give it a rest.

In my opinion this album always gets overlooked in favour of Parade. Just as Controversy gets overlooked by Dirty Mind.

I for one will always love this album, the arrangements of the music is phenomenal but there is less funk. And I for one am glad about that.

Just a really beautiful album. The best...

Shut up already, damn.

One of my top three Prince albums. Too bad the promotion was so low key, with cheap videos and all. At least the Raspberry Beret clip was nice.

He should have milked this project a bit more instead of just squeezing a few of those great songs into the Parade hit and run tour.

And yes, he lost a lot of his RnB and Funk fans with this one, but keep in mind that George Clinton liked this album, and if a funky person like George likes it , it is funky enough.

Besides.....Prince doesn´t HAVE to be funky all the time. I miss this facet of Prince...the songwriter, the guitarist, the rock musician, the diverse band.

yeahthat

Shut up already, damn.

You give it a rest, don't generalize about "black" radio or what Black people will or won't listen to. I noticed before you had to look it to figure out what city it's in. So if a city the size of Rochester had it, don't tell me NYC and some other major cities didn't.

Cool to see some Rochester folks up in here. Yeah DKX used to rock Prince big time back then. I remember them rocking tracks from ATWIAD the day it dropped. They would also rock the Bsides going back to Gotta Stop Messin About on up to the Bsides from ATWIAD. Prince got major play here. OldFriends4Sale said:

uh I can't say he lost Black radio entirely. Because he didn't loose Black fans entirely. I seen Parade concerts in the US was predominately black faces loving the Parade/Around the World in a Day/1999 music

Where I live the 'Black Station' is/was WDKX 104, and Raspberry Beret America Pop Life Hello the Ladder She's Always in My Hair got lots of regular airplay. the whole album was played in its entirety.

the Family album got serious airplay on that station: Screams of Passion, High Fashion, Mutiny, Nothing Compares 2 U

Sheila E's A Love Bizarre, Sister Fate & Dear Michelangelo got lots of air play too

Old Friends 4 Sale was played as a 'promo' for the new Prince movie, New Position, Girls & Boys, Kiss, Love or Money, Under the Cherry Moon, AnotherLover... & Sometimes It Snows In April were constantly on the playlist

From what I know back then, Black music was anything a "black" person did. Come on PR was a rock album and Let's Go Crazy, the Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki Purple Rain was seriously played. Another Lonely Christmas to this very did is still played a few times a day on Christmas

They didn't. I spent time in NYC, LA, and SF during that period.

They were playing Mr. Telephone Man and Oh Sheila in heavy rotation. Not America.

By the way, the Parade tour played MSG...the idea that it was mostly Black faces as you claimed, is far fetched. Maybe you saw it in another city, but check prince vault...he barely played ATWIAD songs live, he'd moved on to Parade already.

Your just mister everywhere and here it all huh lol

I'll leave it at there are over 100 black radio stations throught the country at that time and

non of of knows what was played regularly.

I never said it was mostly Black face's at all the shows. I said I've seen Parade tours in America(video) that had a large percentage of Black faces, it will never be a majority because they are not the majority in number

Again you said He lost Black radio entirely, (generalized statement) you never retracted which means you believe it. 104 WDKX was a Black radio station.

ATWIAD opened the Parade tour usually and led into Christopher Traceys Parade

Pop Life

America (scattered)

the Ladder (scattered)

Raspberry Beret

Condition of the Heart (piano medley) scattered

Mico Weaver: Yeah, actually we did the Purple Rain Tour. It was like 100 shows in the States. The last show was in Florida so everybody was chillin'. Now the tour was over, 'what are we gonna do right after this?' So he called me and said 'Hey come up to my room, and he showed me "Around The World In A Day", the cover and all that stuff. He said 'this is the new thing'. I thought 'this is cool' -- it showed his own label and then he told me 'I want you to play in The Family'.

Sorry I'd it was mentioned:

But after the PR tour prince made a statement through steve
Or David or someone that prince was not going to tour anymore. When asked why the guy said "he's looking for the ladder." when asked "what does that mean?" he said "sometimes it snows in April"

Edit: in 86 I had to do a project for speech class and I dropped the names of several uneealased prince songs in it...

I just re-read the interview where they are talking about the backwards part of darling Nikki... As if that guy was so smart that discovered it? Huh I knew as soon as I heard it what it was I was able to get it hear it the day I got the album. (I had a tape player for a computer that would play and record in all modes (ff or rewind) so I just recorded it in ff mode and then played it in rewind.

And people that had the LP also had heard it too...

There was something cool and cryptic and mysterious about this things Prince did, especially at that time when so much music and protege bands were coming out of Erotic City.

You never knew what to expect.

The belief Prince "lost" black fans was a myth purported by magazines like Right On magazine. Prince always had a stable black fan base. For anyone to think he "lost them" when Around the World came out, that's like buying into generalizations purported by stereotypes of racial backgrounds that if you're a certain race, you'll turn off from someone because they're doing different type of music. Black folks knew Prince was on a different edge by the Prince album anyways. So I agree with OldFriends4Sale.

The blue floral tele picured here is a custom job made by Roger Sadowsky

His Royal Badness has quite a few Hohner teles, all destinguishable from each other in detail and purpose. Hohner also supplied him with new examples during the "Purple rain" and "Parade" tours. All of them in that translucent ocher yellow with the leopard pickguard. http://www.photopix.ch/gu...e&Itemid=2

But Prince also owned a special one off.

http://www.photopix.ch/gu...7&Itemid=8

Prince started using this guitar in 1980. Its unmistakeable funk rhythm sound has graced just about every Prince recording since. Amazing when you take into account the fact that this guitar was a cheap alternative to Fenders Telecaster model.

Prince fell in love with its quirky looks and honking funk tone and has never let it out of his sight for long. He has several of these guitars, most of which have had the necks replaced over the years due to the fact that he has worn them out!

Even some of the guitars with replaced necks are starting to look worn – a clear indication of just how much Prince loves these guitars.

In recent years Prince has changed the pickups in his Hohners, he now has Australian made "Kinman" pickups (these are noiseless pickups but are still passive and retain that vintage sound). But for a long, long time the pickups were standard. With the Hohner being a ‘cheap’ guitar, the pickups weren’t exactly quiet. Noisy pickups combined with Prince’s love of ‘Boss’ effects pedals made for a sound engineers nightmare !

One of my favorites lately and have been playing this one in my car for the last few weeks everyday <3 I Love it!

It's an instant turn on to hear Prince play America rainbo Paisley Park, & Condition of the Heart. I'm hoping that if Prince brings the Welcome 2 America tour back to the States, that he'll be playing some or all of these gems from Around the World in A Day.

America is Amazing guitar it primes prince fans who want to get pumped up for what's coming up next. It's electrifrying excited

Paisley Park is heart warming hug and inclusive rainbo

Condition of the Heart is soothing heart & soul music heart

What the hell does Right On magazine have to do with it?

There's a difference between saying no Black person listened to Prince again, and saying his appeal within a certain market decreased as his style changed.

If you want to pretend there aren't demographics that's a lovely dream, but we're talking 1985. The OP wanted to know the realities of how people felt that record. Today it's meaningless for someone to cross over...but back then it meant something.
