Sign O The Times Movie Outtakes So I'm sitting here watching the outtakes 4 the Sign O the Times film. The movie is one of my all time favorites and I remember seeing it in theaters when I was 6 years old. When I got older, some of the luster was taken away when I found out that the film wasn't "live" per se, but Prince and the band lip syncing and miming 2 a pre recorded tape. We all know the story of how the film was his way of getting out of doing a full scale world tour in 1987 and the shows he filmed had problems with either the audio or the film, so they had 2 shoot new footage at Paisley Park.As I watch these outtakes, Prince is dropping the mic, almost tripping over the crystal ball, forgetting to sing lines,etc. And clearly he and the band are tired. So my question is why didnt they just do a one off show at Paisley Park,film it and release it? Clearly Prince and the band were at the top of their game, so why not just do one more kick ass show rather than film multiple takes of multiple songs, ACTING like Ur performing your ass off? Was it cheaper this way? |

Because the money for filming a live movie had already been spent. Filming with a live audience and getting the lighting right is not easy. SoT was not the first big concert film that ran into this problem—there's a reason “The Wall” concert film never got released.Forcing Prince to do it on the Paisley Park sound stages was a cost effective way of making sure that a usable movie got done. This was also done to keep music video costs down in the 1980s; cheap live videos would film most of the stage shots during rehearsals and the final video would have some and grainy crowd shots spliced in. | |
