I agree with joe, this thread should be locked. Prince is not the president of any country, he is not a politician, he is a musician, thats all. While there were some funny posts in this thread, it also is quite ugly because of the steryotypes and bigoted comments on this thread. Seems like alot of closet racists/bigots are using Prince as an excuse to show their hatred. Besides its a pointless discussion at this point.

the musician that this site is about. Prince has made the news. why shouldn't it be discussed and debated here? he gave the interview to put himself out there, so it's being discussed by his fanbase.

this shouldn't be discussed because there are supposed racists or bigots posting on the topic? it shouldn't be discussed for that reason? then nothing should ever be discussed by anyone in a public forum because a bigot might happen to come along and throw out a thought that you don't agree with.

P, you DUN GOOFED.

i'm not surprised in the least that he said any of these things. he's just gonna keep getting kookier and kookier and no one around him is going to tell him ish because they want to keep their jobs with the most talented musician around. he's got nothing but hanger ons and 'yes' people around him telling him that his nutso crap is absolutely correct.

and that's a shame.

bull headed little shhhhhhhhh...

I find it more interesting that he equates a peaceful state to the subjugation of women and boo to reporters who save their snark for the written piece and don't actually interview/challenge the subject. I'm not really up on how involved he is in religion or is he using as a tool to control people, esp women.

Based on what Prince is reported to have said my guess is that he has no clue what he's talking about. Very few Muslim women wear burquas, those who do live primarily in regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan that Prince has probably never been to. Very few Muslim women even live in countries that require all women to walk around fully covered by any garment. What he said just doesn't make sense.

That's the only time in recent memory he put out a first-rate song with some genuine emotion in it. And you can thank the "haters" for inspiring him. But he's not recording anymore, or so he says. lol

it sounds like Prince was making a strategic barb at the French decision to outlaw women from wearing their shit. That's the likely context. You know? Where was he when the interview took place?

He seems to think that burqa is a synonym for hijab. Which is exactly what you would expect from someone who has zero knowledge of the issue. Yes, he might have heard something about the controversy during his stay in France, but that doesn't mean he has any coherent understanding of it. Judging from both interviews, he is mainly preoccupied with his usual neuroses about people covering his songs or making money from them without his permission.

I know jack about these coverings but i associate hijab with Saudi Arabia and the burqa with Afghanistan. It doesn't matter what the truth of the coverings are in his mind he associated a peaceful state automatically with the suppression of women or visual femininity. I'll still rub my one chin hair and psychoanalyze him from afar.

On the real reason or my theory of his poor record sales....he just go too rigid plain and simple. I hypothesize that artist have a 10 year period in which they are at the peak of artistic ability, open and the output resonates with the widest amount of people. There are exceptions to the rule like Stanley Kubrick,Alfred Hitchcock and the the early pixar films. Prince had a high rate of output that made him unable to work through musical problems later on in his career making him rigid. He only seems able to create something "new" in a comfortable arena (reworking his old songs on tour). With the examples above these are people(or a collection of people) who are able to produce one product over a long period of time allowing the development of higher varied material for later use. I think his golden age was 1979-1989 by the way.

Seems to me that Prince's main problem in terms of selling music is that he no longer believes in the message of personal freedom that made him so popular in the 80s. His recent attempts to make sexy but not-too-dirty pop music sound halfhearted because they are. His heart wants to release The Rainbow Children: Part II as his next album, but that's not going to pay the utility bills at Paisley Park regardless of the state of the music industry. So he gets up there and sings the old songs without believing the words. Most of the people going to the concerts don't know the difference anyway.

I wonder how many of those unreleased music videos in the vault are for weird fundamentalist religious songs that Prince knows nobody wants to hear.

is believing whatever you read in the media at first uninvestigated glance "crazy" ?

or is everyone just a tad naive?

i dont think anyone here is nuts and i dont think prince is either.

but naive? i think we all fall victim to that.

This whole topic discussed here has played on my mind since I saw it first posted, looking at some of the replies posted has left me numb...a handful are actually interesting and engage discussion in a human manner, but the rest is pitiful, thoughtless comments and statements made by people who surround their lives with soap opera...very very shallow.

I dont like to judge people, but what I have read here on this topic/post, shows humanity is in full di-gression rather than progression. (of course this is based on the fact that I would use the odd 800 replies as a basis for a scientific study)

Just remember one small thing, Opinion should not be confused with freedom or freedom of speech...
