Prince.. and Lisa Stansfield - the reaseon why she turned down a Prince song

Long time ago I read that Lisa Stansfield denied to record a Prince penned song, bacause she wouldn't like to be viewed as another "Prince bimbo", (like Sheena Easton, Vanity, Appolonia, Susannah Hoffs etc...?),

Later I read that one of Lisa Stansfield's favorite records was "Parade",

Anyone know which Prince song she was offered to record...?

Or... anyone who remembers these stories about "Prince and Lisa Stansfield" ?

Prince 4Ever. heart

I remember this story. It happened sometime in the 90s.He offered her a song but she turned it down, insisiting that she's a huge fan,but "his reputation takes a nosedive when it comes to the female artists that he produces".

I don't know what song he offered her,but can you imagine Lisa singing "Open Book"? That would have been amazing!

I could hear her doing this song justice even though I think Jevetta Steele's version is just fine.

I think I'm more content with artists - the ones outside his circle that is - covering his music as opposed to be produced by him. He's good at producing alter egos of himself(Vanity & Morris Day) but producing artists who have already established their musical identity is not exactly one of his strengths, simply because he only throws a song that no where highlights their talent instead of giving them a song that was written with them in mind.

I'll say this though...

I'm interested to hear the song that he recorded for Joni Mitchell, and the other songs he recorded for Bonnie Riatt.

I doubt she would've been viewed as another Prince bimbo - At this point Prince was submitting a lot of songs to all kinds of people - most likely this would've been the case, just one song on the album. Maybe the song he submitted was just not up to much.

Agreed. The Bangles, Celine Dion, Kate Bush etc are hardly categorized as "Prince Bimbos"

I wonder if she still feels being labeled a "Prince bimbo" would be worse than "Obscure singer who only did one song the world ever heard of." biggrin

Only people who think hits matter (instead of music) would care about this.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Are you saying Prince can't create good music?

Anyway, relax...I was just kidding.

^But that aside, she never really got anywhere, did she?

Maybe, had she recorded a Prince track she might still be remembered by some people...

Susannah Hoffs was definitely portrayed as a Prince plaything as a result of recording his song.

Hmmm, she had quite a few hits in the UK (her home market), dunno about the US.

She amassed 4 top 40 hits in the US:

"All Around The World" no. 3

"You Can't Deny It" no. 14

"This Is The Right Time" no. 21

"Change" no. 27

She also charted with "All Woman" (no. 56) and "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" (no. 74). She may not have endured as a hitmaker but I would say she's respected by anyone who remembers her. And thanks to Diddy interpolating "All Around The World" for "Been Around The World," she reached a new audience who, even if they didn't know her name, knew her music.

She is certainly more memorable and talented than Vanity and Vanity6, Apollonia 6, Carmen Electra, Jill Jones, Kim Bassinger, Elisa fiorillo etc. They all got there one Prince song or album and they are only remebered by the folks on this site. i left Taja Sevelle off because she was sooooo damned hot.

LS did not need a Prince song to be heard. Cannot say the same for the others.

Good job she refused! Her post-Coldcut career might have hit the rocks after a couple of mediocre singles and she disappear into the annals of pop history...

I wish she had agreed, she was a defined artist at the time and although the prince bimbo perception was prevalent in the mid 80's by the early 90's it wasn't as strong.
