The Question of U / Gingerbread Man

Did the 'gingerbread remix' of Question of U start with the Welcome 2 America tour? Definitely vibin' on that lately.

He also incorporated the song "The One" into it as well, according to others who were there that night. It was an awesome performance that captivated the MSG audience that night. He kept the whole place standing and in awe during that performance. He basically, musically seduced them with that song. headbang

I could picture him singing it in the 80's for some reason, and I was hoping earlier versions might exist. Definitely cool, wherever the idea came from. Thanks for the responses.

Is it "Question of U" or is it "The One"?

I thought it was using the melody of "The One", but I don't have it handy right now.

It was the "Question of U" combined with "The One".

For the performance on 29 December, the opening bars were from 'The Question Of U' followed by the underlying musical accompaniment to 'The One', over which he delivered the words of 'Gingerbread Man', interspersed with two guitar solos and a keyboard solo by Renato Neto.

I kind of hope there isn't a studio version, it has a certain magic live.

yeahthat Gingerbread Man is totally mesmerizing; the way he sings the lyrics and the music kind of makes time stand still.

There were other W2A/21NiteStand concerts where Prince sang GBM, what were they?

According to www.setlist.fm, they have it listed for the 4/29 Forum show.

On these three dates:

29 December 2010: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA

29 April 2011: The Forum, Inglewood, California, USA

25 May 2011 (Show 2): House of Blues Sunset Strip - Restaurant, West Hollywood, California, USA

More recently he has tended to perform the tentatively-titled 'U Will Be ... With Me' in a similar style, occasionally using the same musical arrangement ('The Question of U' / 'The One'), but more frequently during the performance of 'Shhh!'

I thought of Ginger/MaryAnne - from Gilligan's island when he mentioned those names, lol but on a serious note, yes the song was very mesmerizing. When he sang it for the first time at MSG in NYC, I was in awe at how he lyrically seduced and captured the arena with that performance. He basically "owned" us in that moment.lol It was definitely an outstanding performance.

I do hope he includes this live version he first sang at MSG on a future album, it's too good not to be heard. I found the lyrics from another thread that an orger post. Not sure if these are the exact words, but at least an example of it:

Gingerbread Man Lyrics -Prince

Once upon a time
these old hands put some dough 2gether
and made a Gingerbread Man
emeralds 4 eyes
cherries 4 buttons once they were open
she made them 4 nothing
if u can c me holler as loud as u can
C if u can catch the Gingerbread man
Now, eye love me some me
but eyem sick of the island
eyem looking 4 Ginger
eyem tired, eym tired of Maryanne
if u got what eye need
holler as loud as U can
C if U can catch the Gingerbread man
(eye Need something GOLD)
(Guitar Solo)
Ain't no drought about it
eye can make the weather change
when eye make u "ohhhh"
there will b rain
if ur standing over a puddle
eye say
if ur standing over a puddle
if ur standing over a puddle
jump on my hips
and hear this guitar go...girl.....
make ya make ma ya take a trip
sometimes its snows
sometimes it rains
do u no how 2 catch the Gingerbread man?
sometimes its snows
sometimes it rains
do u no how 2 catch the Gingerbread man?
sometimes its snows
sometimes it rains
sometimes it rains
sometimes it rains

Oh yes, that was another rather enchanting song...U. Will. B. With. Me.

Do you happen to know which concerts that song was sung?
