'The Cross' is for me something absolutely cringeworthy and SHOULD'VE NEVER been in a masterpiece album.

Musically is very very poor and you better don't get me started on the lyrics.

Despite not caring about the lyrics, I love the song. But I'm a rocker, so that probably explains.

But seriously, I can understand why you hate it even if I consider it to be a masterpiece. It sounds like christian rock.

Well, I AM an absolute atheist (and proud of it).

I can forget about the lyrics as I do with the overtly sexual ones (which I find stupid), but two lame chords put together just don't do it for me.

Add to that the fact I hate rock and you get the full picture.

do u realize that most of prince work is just based around a chord or 2 maybe 3 with a few minor embelishments thrown in? he usually doesnt jangle it out like on the cross .. he usually keeps it more sparse and less obvious but they are all still very simple song structures .. in fact prince music usually gets worse the more fancy stuff he throws in to make it sound like its got more going on than it does

Of course. Many funk efforts have a couple or chords or even just one.

But building a song with E and A sus2 just doesn't do it for me.

Add to this 'rock' + 'god' and you've killed me.

I think the point of many tracks on SOTT is minimalism, not only in the mix, but in the composition. I think that's why the album didn't hit as hard as a full listening pleasure to high school kids or young college crowds in 1987. It's too artsy a concept, and made some tracks seem sparten, even lifeless.

To better illustrate, all you have to is compare the live movie version of "Play in the Sunshine" to the studio album version. The movie version is more conservative, a more standard arrangement and intended to feel like a warm full rocker. The album version is some weird opposite of that goal.

There's a very strange unique attitude to the way most of this album sounds.

Sign is definitely better. DF has some good tracks of its own, but Sign feels more cohesive, and it's own songs (are we all forgetting Adore?) really are stronger than Dream Factory's.

there is no way i would want a record without Adore and If i was your girlfriend. Those are two of the finest compositions from Prince. Heck they are two of the finest compositons from any artist. DF is good but not as good as sign and it had that horrible Movie Star song.

If i had to make an album combining both of them, it would be:

SOTT

Play in the sunshine

Housequake

The Ballad of dorothy parker

Last Heart

Slow Love

Starfish and Coffee

Hot Thing

Forever in My Life

U got the look

If I was your girlfriend

Strange Relationship

I Could Never take the place of your man

The cross

Train

Adore

I Actually like its gonna be a beautiful night, but i think "train" is a bit more unique and i like it more. "It" is the only song on there that i do not like so i'd replace it with last heart. But overall, it would be almost the same as sott, i'd only make two changes

I'll never understand all the love for Adore.

It's a by-the-numbers ultra-average soul ballad.

What would your fave Prince ballad be then? I think Slow Love and Adore are awesome.

i am an atheist as well but i dont see what thats got to do with it...it is what HE BELIEVES that is important to the song....not what i think...you must have problems with a lot of his music if you have a problem with his beliefs...i dont agree with his beliefs but i can understand WHY he wants to believe in whatever...his lyrics only annoy me when they are too simplistic.....no more war...stop dropping bombs...those lyrics annoy me more than anything religious

.

as far as the song goes...i love it because its soo diffirent to what he had done before...i love the fact it is very simple and i love the way it builds and i LOVE his vocal...the version he does in the sign o the times movie is even better...the passion he sings it with also makes it a great track in my mind...

.

and the number of chords means nothing in what makes a great song....what about the beatles great leap forward with tomorrow never knows on revolver....how many chords did that have ?.....

.

ONE CHORD..one chord all the way through... two chords is plenty in the right song...

.

.

Not only the religious stuff. As I said earlier in this thread, overtly sexual lyrics seem stupid and childish to me.

I've learnt to forget about Prince lyrics. I just enjoy the instrumentation, the vocal melody and the way that melody is sung.

English is not my mother tongue and that helps a lot to withdraw yourself from what he's saying.

I don't have a problem with funk stuff being based on 1 or 2 chords. But no tin a song like The Cross, even if he was singing about my favourite subject.

I hate rock. My favourite genre is jazz. That means I pay a lot of attention to the harmonic (and not only the melodic) side of the music.

Why would anyone choose Dream Factory over Sign "O" The Times? Many of SOTT's greatest tracks aren't even on Dream Factory.

"Train"?? Ugh. I'd definitely put "It" back on there, but take "U Got The Look" off and put in "Rebirth of The Flesh", or simply add it without omitting UGTL.

Dream Factory is kind of interesting and weirder than Sign. But for a collection of songs, I might go with the more no-nonsense approach of Sign.

With Prince, editing is often a good thing. But In All My Dreams and Crystal Ball are pretty awesome.

No one has an official Dream Factory Playlist so there really is no comparison

Dream Factory probably has over 30 outtake considerations

Sign o the Times is a combo of 2 Revolution era album releases Dream Factory & Camille

If I had my way I would prefere a Dream Factory + Camille release in 1987 2 albums

Dream Factory: Sign o the Times, the Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Slow Love, It, Starfish & Coffee, Forever in My Life, Strange Relationships, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, the Cross are most Prince fans favorites

Camille: Housequake, Strange Relationships, Shockadelica(B-side) If I Was Your Girlfriend, Rock Hard in a Funky Place(Black album)

I prefere the 2nd configuration which I feel is awesome probably better than the SOTT release. Especially with songs like Crystal Ball Power Fantastic & In A Large Room With No Light

As a concept album it works, it flows it just makes sense,

A more adult mature feel

the Camille album has a more fun playfull feel, I could easily see songs like Play In the Sunshine, U Got the Look, Hot Thang etc as B sides or something

Adorecream

Its too hard, they are both brilliant, neither have any filler, and both are very strong, but I will be boring, because SOTT has Adore on it, and thats why I would choose that.

Still I think Dream Factory is essential listening and the L and W moments make it even better, especially their version of Strange Relationship. If I give SOTT 96/100 Dream Factory would be around 93 or 94.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

that is the way mine came way back in '87.

It's just two discs, one above the other in separate cases instead of together in the thicker cases like they do nowadays
