Blame it Thank it Fight it Hate it......

or accept it. Took me 38 years to do, but today the connection became so frightingly obvious that I can't deny the notion any longer. It shocked me with inspiration to start this thread. Sit in with me for a sec please while I share witcha.

I've been a psychotically obsessed Prince fan from the moment I heard his cover of Just My Imagination on the Small Club 2nd Show boot back in '88. Been going to Prince birthday parties on June 7th for about 20 years now and that's all I ever have conciously planned to do on June 7. But surprisingly especially because it wasn't purposely planned, I got married on June 7 in 2003 (since divorced). And today, I came to the realization that although I am a successful MD at Cedars Sinai Medical Center (arguably #1 most revered hospital in the world), for numerous reasons it wasn't meant to be. Today I announced my retirement from the field of medicine. I spent all of college majoring in premed for it, I moved to a different state to go to medical school for 4 years for it, I was a resident physician for 4 years before working as a private MD the past 5 years with it--all the time, energy, money, sacrifice, etc. of devoting my whole life to getting it and wearing it--and today, June 7, the same day my "superhero" was born, I officially hung up my white coat. In essence today is the 1st day of the rest of my life. And trust me, I never once had the conscious thought that I would retire on Prince's birthday.

Fate connected me with Prince's music. Fate married me on June 7th, 2003. Today Fate gave me the courage to retire from a profession I devoted 20 of 38 years I've been alive for to follow my life's true passions. I accept I'm just a card in Fate's hand and blown away by the wonder of what major life changing events are going to happen to me on June 7 in the future.

I'm eager to read if you guys have June 7 stories that have caused you to question just how much of an impact June 7 has had on your life. Holla!

It's called Self-deprecating humor. I use self-deprecation or making fun of myself to try to put the reader at ease. I didn't mean to offend.

Hey Phunk...

Once again, I admire your unbridled expression... fellow Orgers may be tempted to fuck with you because you expose your emotions, but they don't even realize that it's this freedom of expression that attracts us all to Prince & his music...

Funny story about that '88 boot of "Just My Imagination"...

If It's the version I'm thinking of, me & "Bronzefunk" we're basically leaning on the stage at the Palace in Los Angeles when Prince killed that song... After that song was over, he handed me, bronze & the person next to us guitar picks & said "7 bucks a piece."

One of my fondest Prince memories....

If I'm not prying (too much wink), may I ask if you have any specific plans as to what to do next in your life, now that you've retired from the medical profession?

Good luck to you. rose

Oh, and as to the question in your post, unfortunately nothing of importance has ever occurred in my life on June 7th.

Ahh, I've been waiting for Bronzefunk to tell me that story. He said Prince gave him one! Dang, I just got my first one at the House of Blues Wednesday night 5/26 but not directly from Prince but I still love it.

Phunk, the only thing was my grandmothers birthday was on June 8, the day after Prince's bday so I could never forget Prince's bday.

Congratulations on your retirement! Enjoy!

Not prying. I think the better question is what am I not going to do cause for numerous reasons being a doctor blinded me with tunnel vision. It's as if I just made it through the tunnel and now I'm overstimulated by opportunities that were in my peripheral vision but I couldn't see them when I was in the tunnel. Let's see, so far I've thought about launching 2 websites, writing a book, becoming a soccer coach, using my M.D. to give inspirational talks to high school students to encourage them to follow their passion, starting a clothing line....in essence, I don't know where life is going to take me but those are all things I'm passionate about and I am going to really try hard to not resist anything Fate throws my way. I'm 38, made enough money to support me for the next few months without having to worry about making money tomorrow so I got a little freedom with time to figure out what I'm going to do, but the most important thing to me is freedom from feeling unfulfilled.

thx 4 asking butterfly

Do you think you'll die on 7th June? That would be somehow funny (that date, not the event).
You are pure, you are snow.

On the 'Old Friends For Sale Lyrics breakdown request' thread you said:

Well Nouveau Dance, I'm proud of you! At least youre rolling your eyes instead of keeping them closed like they were almost 3 years ago to today when you responded to the thread above. Or is ignorance bliss Nouveau? Cause you sure were talking as if you knew or had "knowledge", and I guess it was based on.....nada..... thus exposing how little you care to open your eyes in search of the truth; rather just stay in your own world, lie, and make fun of others who put in the effort you don't.

Hopefully you can learn to accept fate and allow it to not just open up your eyes but enrich your life...but congrats on rolling them smile

I roll my eyes when people start talking as if they were there when the reality is their "knowledge" is based on.....nada thus exposing how little they care for finding out what the truth is; rather they just stay in their own world, lie, and make fun of others who put in the effort they don't.

I got married on June 7th, 2008. Didn't plan it for Prince's birthday, it was an outdoor wedding, and had we known it would literally be 100 degrees that day we probably would have planned it for a less sweltering day! Still married, still in love, went out for Thai food in celebration. Thai good, you like shirt?

I'm just saying...

Forget the retirement, Dave, I'm blown away by your story of witnessing Just My Imagination worship

Thanks for the congrats antoinet. Its weird hearing that because it wasn't like I worked for 40 years. But I think you are congratulating me on the difficult, slow 18, confusing years it took me to understand and then to muster up the courage to stop doing something I'm not enjoying. I get upset it took this long, but I was reminded about a few other docs that took them much longer so it It could be worse. I could have gone another 10 years before ultimately coming to the same decision.

thx dave & antoinet!

Doggiesrflyingalloverthemtrees with that post!!!!! I guess the lesson I learned from your post was that at my wedding we should have had some of that Thai food--cause it would have looked nice on our shirts and maybe we would still be married smile

But that's major bro if you're like me and didn't plan it. Thanks for sharing! And even if you did consciously plan it, it still is a relationship. Let me ask you, imagine you weren't as into Prince enough to even know his birthday. Do you still eventually got married on June 7??

Or has Fate played you in a different hand??

If you're the kind of dude who thinks you can do better than being an MD at Cedars Sinai, then you must know what you're doing. I hope.

Godspeed.
