Same as always... I think there are 3-4 gems on every album. Well, maybe not the first one.

For You, Soft and Wet, Crazy U, I'm Yours.

there are the four gems

I expect the new music to be much more of the same boring stuff...so rather pessimistic if you want to call it like that!

I guess for me "For You" and "Soft and Wet" are the best, but they're not up to the standard of unique or personal new territory that Prince soon was trying and is still trying (in my opinion).

Sure, but despite what Prince did with Pepe Willie For You was very much a debut album from a young and inexperienced artist. A good case can be made that it is his "worst" album and it is certainly not the place to start but I think it has a naive charm to it.

I quite like "My Love is Forever." I wouldn't mind hearing him try that one in a new arrangement live. I don't think it will ever happen but it would be interesting to hear him play the whole album live. Even a song like "Baby," which for me is probably the weakest track, could sound quite different live.

Optimistic! He is the only artist to never dissapointment me with a new set of songs. I love all of his music. Sure some is better than the rest and of course some songs are not the best. I put 2010 on the other day after not listening to it for about 2 months and thought wow what an awesome collection of tracks. I dont understand why a lot of people who hate on his new music so much even come here. If I disliked music that much I would just find something else to listen to. Why spend so much time discussing an artist you guys think is washed up?

Of course optimistic.
Whats the point of listening to him at all and following him if everything new about him is viewed pessimistically. What a miserable existence to live in.

Always optimistic but usually thoroughly disappointed as a result .. he has just enough good ideas for me to think that he could still write a good song if he wanted to, but never enough good ideas to make ONE SINGLE GOOD SONG that can stand next to his classics. And unfortunately he tends to ruin his good ideas with lyrics and arrangements that make me cringe and embarrassed to be a fan.

Prince has become more of a production line than an artist. It's sad that he has become the thing he railed against when he was fighting for his rights to the masters. He has become an the employee the record companies saw him as, creating product to sell. Put this beat here, these chords there, try to sound kinda like this guy who made great artistic music 30 years ago, throw in an uptempo rockabilly song with an r n b song .. a slow sexy song a few funky songs and clearly nobody cares about the lyrics anymore. Master it to sound like it was recorded with a casio keyboard drum machine in an alluminum can and thats good enough. prince record number 137 is now complete, on to the next one.

And for those that say he's making better music than anyone else his age, I say bullshit. If Bob Dylan can make new relevant music so can Prince. You all cut him too much slack as fans because you still buy his music because you think he still looks good. Thats the reason a lot of pop music sells, cuz people think they look good. Cmon .. does he have to get ugly before you will tell him the truth. You know pretty girls aren't born dumb .. they just stop learning because they get cut so much slack and get by on physical appeal.

Actually that's not true. You can polish a turd but it can get awfully messy. wink

I am always curious about his releases. The only time I considered quitting being a fan was during the ´Kirk J years´. But then, TRC made me a happy fan again.

Sometimes I feel like he is in auto pilot just like on those days, but at least he is playing more guitar and released an ´artsy´ album recently (Lotus).
