I can appreciate the message and sentiment Perry would like to express... I just think they'd be more effective if incorporated into stronger well-written stories. I believe he has a sincere desire to identify with and support black women but his good intentions do not disguise the fact that he's a terrible filmmaker.

They have effect they just dont have to be Zora Neale or Eves Boyou. He is just one playwright and film director telling stories in his manner. There are others making movies out there too...they unfortunatley arent doing enough though and that's not Tyler's problem.

Precious was a good one..but since then other than Tyler Perry's movies and plays there havent been any others getting any kind of recognition.

confuse wha..?? lol

a) that is not a racist remark (some of folks here need to get [and use] a dictionary); there was no prejudice or discrimination involved what-so-ever... Prince is light-skinned. Tyler often has a light-skinned black guy in his films in some central role; if P likes his movies that much, why not be in one of 'em...? shrug or not? it's not that serious. I only made this thread b/c I thought it was funny that P likes him so much -- and so many of the fans here have a rabid fit here regarding anything to do with Tyler Perry (I don't care much either way; a couple of the movies I saw were ok, but, I can't relate to a lot of southern stuff.. and some of the characters are offensive -- in my humble opinion)

b) you made 2 posts on this thread, prior to this one, and nobody criticized you for either of them - what are you talking about??

c) what does Tyler catering his movies to a black audience have to do with Prince.org existing?

Did any of you happen to notice that Prince appeared on Lopez just 5 days before the fictional character Madea's birthday. Madea was born on April 26. She is 16 years older than Prince.

sigh They warned me about this forum.....

No... You are not getting it. Instead of perhaps asking for further clarification on what I meant, you just jumped to conclusions. You don't know me, and you took no time to try to comprehend what exactly was said - just flying out of your mouth (fingers) with incorrect accusations of racism.

You remind me of the ppl who went ballistic on NPGMC when "Black Sweat" came out, calling Prince a racist b/c they didn't get the song lyrics. hmph! neutral

1) Color is important--if the role specifically calls for a certain complexion or "race."

Example: that little girl who starred in last year's version of "True Grit," Hailee Steinfeld, is black, Filipino and white. If she had been darker, like her mother, she wouldn't have gotten that role.

Your posts suggest that you are a fan of Perry's movies, so, one would think that you'd know that "light skinned dude" is a type of role often cast in TP's movies (and movies like his); how you twisted what I said into all o' that above is beyond logic and reason. sad

2) The dictionary would be for getting the correct definition of terms like racist/racism; not your spelling (though your post does include a major spelling/grammar error, but I'll get back to that).

That's a hell of an accusation to make when you don't know ppl---or what they are talking about neutral ~ but that's a common problem here; ppl always jumping the gun and not taking a minute to really read and comprehend what others are actually saying.

http://www.merriam-webste...ary/racist

Definition of RACISM

1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination
rac·ist noun or adjective

Did I say or infer that Prince was superior, or inferior, b/c of his color? No.

Did I say or infer that I didn't like Prince b/c of his color? No.

Did I say or infer that Prince should not get a job (role in a Perry movie) b/c of his color? No.

I made no racist remarks about Prince, I made no racist remarks about anyone, real or fiction.

~ and, as a woman who is the product of many "races," I know the full spectrum.. you don't have to "school" me on that.

3) What I did say was that I don't care much either way about or for Perry/his movies; like a lot of ppl, I think some of his stuff is ok, I think some of his stuff is bad b/c of the way it portrays [some] black ppl shrug ...

I also noted that I posted this b/c of the other ppl on org who rant and rally so much against Perry ~ here is an account, on film [video], showing that Prince -- the exalted, almighty, purple one on high himself -- loves Tyler Perry and his work.

I was curious as to how the Pro-Prince Anti-Perry ppl would react to that earth-shattering, mind-blowing news.

4) Did you pay any attention to the string that brought about my comment?

You know, because P just happens to BE a light-skinned dude -- and b/c it [him being in a Perry movie] would also cause "all hell [to] break loose" here--which ties in to what HG and T84 were talking about.

As it was stated earlier [various threads, here and elsewhere], some of Perry's movies seem a bit.... formulaic; one of the oft-repeated characters in movies like Perry's is a specifically light-skinned dude (or gal) in a role that's integral to the story line. So, if Prince likes his stuff so much, maybe one day he'll be in one of Perry's movies. (I know some of y'all just cringed.. sorry.. lol )

So... U Tell Us: what is racist about acknowledging that somebody could fill the role for a recurring theme [a theme that also isn't racist]?

Nothing.

You misunderstood what I said, you did not have a clear grasp of the true definition of racist/racism, and you blew it out of proportion. You insulted me for nothing. Not very 'love4oneanother' of you, now is it..?

If you don't understand something, or there's even a remote chance you're taking something the wrong way, ask somebody.

5) As for your errors [What does being lite skin have 2 do with Tyler casting a role? Black people come in all shades and colors. Being lite skin or dark skin has nothing 2 do with it.]:

Pay attention to your verbs; one is not/cannot be "light/dark skin," one can only have light/dark/whatever [complected] skin.

I was in the "nerd" class and/or attended "special" schools my entire academic life, beginning with Kindergarten. As a little girl, there were times that I read the dictionary for fun. By the time I was 10, I had the reading comprehension and writing skills of an adult. As an adult, my written works have been published in anthologies twice. So far.

Getting a B in English is not bad (* unless you took English as another language, spelling isn't a separate subject ["English & spelling were my top subjects in school"]; spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, diction, penmanship, etc. all fall under English [Language Arts]), but nobody ever says "bring your B game."

The correct wording is:

What does being lite-skinned have 2 do with Tyler casting a role? ... Being lite-skinned or dark-skinned has nothing 2 do with it.

Don't leave off the -ed when you write, be sure to enunciate it when you speak.

and this is why Madea is funny and an earlier poster was told by friends that he doesn't get "black humor".

I also had a Madea in my family. Madeas were in black churches when we were bad ass kids... with the pistol in the pocketbook and the mustache (facial hair). That is why the movies are so popular. It is nostalgia at its best.

[snip - Mars23] He pretends he's all sunshine and light and then he starts typing and his viciousness shows. He likes every single thing Prince ever does and he barks like a psycho whenever someone calls Prince on his shit.

That's kinda harsh isn't it? Maybe I just don't see it. I'm prolly considered a [snip] to some... but hey... whatever.

Why aren't any of the Tyler fans here citing specific moments in his "art" that are innovative or even slightly clever? Just because Perry is wealthy and popular doesn't really win the argument that he is not a ham-handed hack.

I like when he talks about how the music is not the same as it used to be (followed by singers on stage doing very good renditions of old school classics).

Madea talking to the audience about disrespectful people or just rapping with the audience about life...sometimes he will just talk to one person (as Madea) about what they did in the audience.

His plays deal with very dramatic themes yes but are handled through the love, religion, forgiveness and comedy.

another good one is when as Madea he is talking to a woman who is involved with a man who is no longer a good thing for her. He is either neglectful or abusive etc.

anyway Madea talked about how some couples are meant for life and others are meant for a season. And the woman he was talking to was trying to make a season into a lifetime... it will not work.

I personally found that enlightening in my own life. Some people are just for the season... an opportunity to learn a life lesson, or test of character etc. It doesn't mean that just because it WAS good, that it means it is meant to last forever.

I wish I could find that clip.

Still waiting for Tyler to come out of that glass closet.

No need for that. See just like most black families have a "Madea" most every black church has a Tyler... usually the choir director.

I'm just sayin'. boxed
