Well for me - I always thought it was just ok with me - I can only listen to it like once or twice a year. If Purple rain comes on the radio I turn it - sorry [Edited 3/31/11 12:30pm] Um... let me warm up my vocals

I just don't see how people can say that this is his #1 song out of everything he has made 
Only b/c of the movie? COME ON MAN!!!!! and it makes me 
to see people crying on this song... Again, I'm sorry again but I heard more beautiful words on his other songs.
"Blue" material is considered inappropriate. In comedy and music it refers to material with bad language, sex talk, etc...
A good example is the documentary about the most disgusting joke in the world, "The Aristocrats".
Porno films used to be referred to as blue films. So if "she" likes IT in the dark, but Prince likes a "blue" light, I would imagine he's trying to convince his lover to have sex with him while watching a porno, (the TV projecting a "blue" light).
Or he could just be talking about screwing with some blue neon on in the room.
It's about sex and how his lover-of-the-moment has a different set of tastes.
Now you know. It's actually one of the better songs on that album. Different for him musically and lyrically no different than his usual sex stuff. | |

i cry sometimes just listening to it. usually if i watch the movie though. but its not because of the words, its because of the music.
i havent heard it a billion times though.. purposely, so not to wear it out. same thing with the beautiful ones, but because i love that song more, i listen to it even less often. that song makes me cry just about every time i hear it. beacuse of both the lyrics and music. and especially the screaming. | |

I think to me it's less about the movie and more about seeing the work pay off for him. Up until Purple Rain (movie and album), Prince was brilliant, but not yet widely recognized. That album was his turning point, and that song symbolizes this transition (for lack of a better word). Just my take on it. But all that said, yes I do still skip the track for the most part, but on the rare chance I hear it, I am reminded why it is so great. Also I think that it is the emotion in the lyrics that makes it special. He conveys the feeling that he has given up trying to fix it because every time he tries, his efforts are misunderstood. He tries to explain himself, but in the end, He gives the task over to a higher power to provide the intended understanding, the "Purple Rain." I can't say it's my favorite, but I have to give it its props. | |
