Yeah, it was kind of jarring at first hearing Janet sing in her lower register. "Get up off that grey line"

Yeah!...and what's more, what kind of decision would it be for her to leave a controlling father...go to another who controls everything...to produce an album with her wanting 'Control'...lol... She would've become a protege...

On the album "Design of a Decade" Janet admits she wanted that Prince sound and thats why she worked with Jam and Lewis. She says she was rebelling and that while everyone was listening to her brothers music at the time, she was listening to P. - she makes it very clear she was influenced by Prince's sound.

I wonder whether she is still rebelling given her onstage antics...
She wanted the 'Prince' sound?...huh?...what about all this 'strong' 'independent woman', 'don't need a man', meme I keep hearing in society?...(ok sarcasm / off...lol)
Create your own sound Janet.

I will have to go back and listen to WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY? to see if I hear any of 100 MPH in it. I do remember thinking that I could hear parts of The Time's COOL in it around 4 mins or so. Does anyone else hear that at all?
That would make more sense because it was a Time song (Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis played it a lot in concert) and it was written by Prince.
Prince saying "who wrote that?" during the Nude Tour makes more sense now. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. No. Jam and Lewis wanted to work with Janet and when Joe Jackson heard about it he told Jimmy "I don't want my daughter sounding like Prince".
From my knowledge Janet never expressed a desire to work with Prince and was actually contemplating working with Jam and Lewis because of their risqué music/sound.
In regards to Prince and Janet:
-She has always been hugely complementary of Prince and said during a RN interview how she loved "soft and wet". She even once said in an interview that growing up you're either a Prince or Michael fan - and she said she was a Prince fan.
- Prince was rumoured to be playing bass in disguise during Macy's "Love will never do" tribute at the MTV icon show - He was apparently listening to "Damita jo" when it came out a reporter noted it in his CD collection when she/he was interviewing her in 2004). - And we all know he's played WHYDFML quite a few times - And his "sister of a genius" quote was Prince being Prince - awkward.
I don't think there is any truly bad blood or dislike between them.

I doubt Prince dissed Janet or anything and besides Janet WANTED to work with Jimmy & Terry since she was a bigger fan of The Time.

Well, I always said there was a period where they shared the same hairstyle. They're kindred spirits
I remember when "All For You" first came out, critics were saying "Would You Mind" was her "Do Me Baby".

You know what?...some of Janet's dancing reminds me a lot of Prince's dancing...

Whatever might have gone on between them in the 80's doesn't seem to show. I saw Janet at the Target Center during the Velvet Rope Tour and Prince sat alone in the roped off soundboard area during most of the show. If there was any bad blood between them, she wouldn't have allowed him to sit there I'm sure. Only a friend would have let another artist sit in their soundboard area. early janet is very prince influenced.the first 2 jam and lewis lps.and it should be.jam and lewis was fresh from the time so all their productions sounded very "prince " and "time" like.which isnt a bad thing.

The only bad (or snarky) thing I can remember him saying was live during a perfomance of Get Wild. I can't remember if it was Astoria or Emporium. Where he says "who coming in here after us Janet Jackson?" Then Morris Hayes plays a sample that says "Oh no Muther Fucker not today" he then laughes and says "We'll leave that one alone"
It's probably just a light hearted joke

Jesse's own version of Fast Girls is so much better than Janet's though.
