2elijah is right on point in her remarks above. I really respect and like what she said above. This race and percentage stuff is really holden humanity back. When I was at Princeton, I took a class with Dr. Cornel West and he was one great professor. I loved the way he broke down the social constructs of racism, classism and sexism in America. This was one of the greatest classes that I've ever taken on African American history, religion and culture. In fact, Dr. West even attends P's concerts sometimes.

Of course, are you 2 acting out some skit for Black History month?

You have white guilt, everything you say is suspect

Thanks for reply. and thanks for the picture. I imagined Sheila's mom looking more average AA and not so exotic looking. Her "Black" mom looks more racially ambiguious than Sheila herself.

Right because her mom isn't Black, she's Creole, she's from a line a mixed race people from Louisiana. Beyonce Knowels mom is Creole too, and so is actress Lynn Whitfield mom. It's considered a different ethnic group.

I agree, from the time i first saw her in the Glamorous Life video I always saw Sheila E as a 'mulatta' Sheila actually to me, has a look that I see as discernably of africa/other admixture, where her brothers have a more stereotypical 'latin' look

^

Yes, it is funny how siblings can take on very different looks even though they are of the same 2 people. look at the Debarges. Bunny Debarge always looked like a light skinned black woman with "good hair" where some of her brothers look down right Mexican.

That was a big shocker to me. I always always thought the Debarges were either Mexican and Black or Spanish and Black.

Also when I saw an interview of their mother... I was surprised that she looked and talked just like women of my family. I thought she would be a real nutjob staying with an abusive man who also abused her babies... but when they interviewed her for Unsung... I could understand why she stayed so long. Nothing pathological .... just a woman who had too many babies and no job skills.

nod I have older aunts who endured the same sort of family environment... for the same reasons.

BlackandRising

I heard a comedian tonight discuss how Barack Obama, when he decided to run for President, was described as a black man running for president. Then, when he won, he was suddenly "multi-racial". He then joked that, in reality, if Obama was out stealing your car, you wouldn't go to a cop and say, "hey, there's a multi-racial guy stealing my car". You'd say there's a black guy stealing your car, because, well, he looks black. And that is what matters, in matters of race, especially with Black people.

And there it is. Halle Berry's mother reportedly told her young daughter to look in the mirror .. "What do you see? I see a beautiful black woman. And that is what others will see when they see you."
So Halle identifies with Black because she appears to be a member of the black race
Now people can go through this whole I'm multiracial or I'm only 1/8 black but if your make up makes you APPEAR black to everyone else then you are going to waste a lot of time and energy constantlycorrecting people. I'm sure if it is something important likefor medical reasons (is genetic dieases) or marriage and children discussions being exact is important. Butfir the casual everyday o coccurences, does it really matter. No matter how much tiger woods protest, if he was not a celebrity he would be viewed as a black man because he LOOKS like one. Likewise if you are black but can really pass for white Do you go around all day telling people " you know I'm really black" to the people you meet at thebusstoo? Intbe produce section? Just keep it moving. Society will fit you in a box. Wehether you like it or not.

^ and for my biracial daughter that is how I'm gently guiding her. She looks like a light skinned black girl. Even though her father is white and her aunts and grandparents whom she is close to are WHITE white (freckles blond hair etc) she cannot be white because that is not how God wanted her to be.likewise her hair is brown and CURLY not "yellow" and straight like her first cousin. How you appear to me has a lot to do with your perceived race classification.
