Autographs

Where some people get Prince's autographs?

I would like to have one, but I don't feel comfortable stalking people.

How could I get one?

I am somewhat embarrassed to say - I think I bought one that is a fake .

I have "casually" been researching it ... over the years ... whenever someone on here posts autographs that they swear are REAL ... in person ... etc ....

Now I am more confused than ever about it ...

Mine looks like it was "faked " by a girl ... however someone posted one that they said was definately real that looked alot like mine ! (I think mine is from a reputable dealer ... a member of UACC etc .... but then again ... like i said above ... i still felt it was fake ...

I felt it was fake largely based on an "Autograph" magazine that posted a REAL autograph that looked more like a guys handwriting ... you could make out the word PRINCE but it was somewhat elegible... sometime I will try to post it ...

(I am not good at posting pics or scans etc lol )

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

And where dealers get those autographs? I don't think Prince will ever do something like that just signing stuff for dealers to sell. Prince has a huge ego and don't like to be used by any1.

I doubt that he ever signs anything, maybe in some occations he signs stuff directly to his fans.

But I might be wrong.

I brought this up a month-ish back cuz a friend of mine was trying to buy an autographed The Future vinyl and I am always super skeptical.

There truly is no actual way for the buyer to prove the item is legit. Even Certs of Authenticity can (and likely will) be faked by a seller who is selling a fake autograph. Additionally, Prince stopped signing autographs around 1993 and his autographed changed in a few variable ways over the years. Sometimes you would see "Love God, Prince prince" or "Love, Prince prince" or "Love God, Prince" or "Love, Prince <3" etc.

So far, I think the biggest way to indicate a "reasonably close" signature of Prince's, you need to look for the distinctive P (he tends to swoop it forward and then back in a similar fashion to the font used on the 1979 album) and to make notice of how he greets people. Prince is typically not a "Thanks for everything Jane Doe!" type of guy.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for responding. I wouldn't buy his fake autograph from dealers.

Plus, even if its real, it's going to be nothing special, because it makes more special when he signs it exclusively for you. Lucky people who work with him...

The only way to absolutely be sure a singular Prince autograph is real is be being present at the signing. It seems there are more fakes than real ones in circulation. And, yes - his signature varied drastically through the years, which makes it even more difficult to research authenticity. Seeking second-hand Prince "autographs" is a wasted endeavor in my opinion. The guy put his "Love God" sig on guitar picks for years, so copying that to larger items would not be difficult.

That said, proven authentic handwritten Prince lyric sheets and other pieces of similar memorabilia were recently auctioned off by a reputable house which had the appropriate chain of provenance. These came from a tour bus driver's notebook which was given by Prince and broken up for the auction. But this was high-dollar stuff.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Thank you everyone for answering my question....

Unfortunately, all this means I'll never get his autograph. Or maybe I will take the risk and buy one if I see it on ebay.

(I've always wanted his autograph signed on his photo of his hands only, playing his guitar, I think its the best Prince's feature-HIS HANDS, although he is good looking everywhere)

I guess you are American.

I never understood the need to collect artefacts and scribes, idolising someone in the process. Do you somehow feel "closer" to the artist if you create some form of minor link?

I bought an autographed copy of the 2004 Rolling Stone cover for $40.

Of course, I knew it wasn't really Prince's autograph. I just bought it as a joke for my daughter.

But the seller was a lady from Ohio, and she had like 500 positive sales. And the autograph is EXACTLY like Prince's.

I'm still very doubtful he signed it, but you know I haven't seen any other Prince autographs floating around, which is something you'd think an autograph forger would be doing.

And I swear, that autograph is PERFECT. If Prince didn't sign it, someone is one helluva a talented forger.

A flower? Well, there is your problem.

You should have given him a cassette of one of his songs that you'd "made better".

Or wait - a starfish. Yeah, you should have given him a starfish. That works every time.

Oh no, I heard that he gets mad when some1 remakes his music, he almost beats this people up, not sure if it's true.

And what about starfish? What kind of reaction he has? And who even came up with such crazy idea like giving his a starfish? This is nuts.

Same thing with flowers. If that was me, I would feel very uncomfortable when people all the time say to my face "you are the best, the greatest, the most talented" or giving all kind of lame gifts.

I would not know how to react every time or what to say. I would run away and hide from all those crazy fans.

He doesn't want to collect all this garbage and dust collectors like gifts, and he certainly doesn't want someone butcher his music. I would feel so violated and would love to be left alone.

But I might be wrong.

A lot of things wind up in the hands of autograph collectors for any number of reasons. Old promotion photos that he'd sign for promoters and DJs, albums and singles signed for fans, eventually someone needs cash and if they have a few of his autographs are either going to hand them off to someone as a gift, or put it up on Ebay and see if they get any bites.

With older record stores going out of business, with radio stations sending their promotion records off to the Salvation Army, sometimes signed items pop up in unusual places.

But if you do wind up with an autograph, you should get it authenticated and check it up against the autographs people have posted in the forums.

I don't see why you shouldn't write a letter and send something in the mail just to see if it comes back signed, or get a response. But don't send anything that you expect back.

Everyone has a different attitude about signing things, some people enjoy it, some people feel they're going to turn around and make money later that day, and some people absolutely hate it. Some people want bragging rights on having met him, so having that piece of signed memorabilia means a lot to someone who has bought all the music.

But they also know the less they sign autographs, the more value they have.

Odds are he signs as little as possible in his day to day life, including legal paperwork, and has someone signing on his behalf.

And if you did actually meet him, odds are you prob. wouldn't be asking him to sign something for you, because you'd prob. be at a loss for words. There's celebrities that wind up tongue tied meeting him because they grew up listening to him. And I'm sure he's declined autograph requests from celebrities, too, but if someone was helping him promote something, he might have sent a thank you.
