Prince "Altered" on Youtube

It's nice to see the plethora of Prince videos now up on youtube. But I don't understand why Prince "altered" videos are being posted up on youtube. Every "altered" video is sped up or viewed as if u're looking in a mirror. I can't stand this! Can someone explain to me why this is?

Prince did not "alter" anything. His fans who are uploading the video alter the video to avoid the copyright issue

I'm well aware that it's not prince that's altering anything.
I didn't understand that the reason the videos were being altered was because of copyright issues.

Thanx!

These videos need to come down because they SUCK!!!!!

I still don't get how "altering" the pitch gets it past Prince's people. It's not like you're creating a whole new song by speeding it up or mirroring the already copyrighted video. I'm just curious what kind of technology Prince's people use that they can detect a song/video that's copyrighted and not catch the same song or video that's "altered".

what hhhhdmt means (whether he/she knows it or not) is they alter the pitch or speed or tone of the audio as to avoid the auto detectors of those songs. Some also flip the video (like a mirror image) as well.

But it is still a copyright violation. In fact by altering and admitting to having altered them they are showing that they MEANT to violate copyright! Which may be a crime. (Under the DRM laws attempts to circumvent copyright violation measures is a crime) when normally copyright is just a civil matter.

Another legally worthless attempt is the 'fair use' notice. Something dumb that the clip is being posted to educational reasons. Well even a school has to get permission from the owner of the copyright to use any more than a small portion of a work. (something like 10% or 30 seconds which ever is shorter).

Students have more leeway for a project but NOT schools and not teachers. And even then they can not make it publicly accessible outside the scoop of the class.

it only tricks the bots used to search for copyrighted music that compares the song posted to one on file. And it is not prince that is doing it is the web site.

But if it were the website, then wouldn't ALL artists' videos need to be altered to get past copyright infringement? I can watch just about any artist's video on YouTube except Prince. His people have 2 be behind it in some way.

well of course Prince has asked his lawyers to do that.

The thing he doesnt understand is that anyone who wants to download a free album can easily do it. There are so many filesharing sites where albums are uploaded and removed everyday. You cannot keep tracks of hundreds of sites. I doubt there are many people who go to youtube and convert each prince song to mp3 to get the album. They can easily use torrent to do so.

Ofcourse i strongly believe that you should support the artist you like by buying the actual album. But people who download illegally will get it one way or the other. Blocking your videos on youtube isnt going to stop people from illegally downloading stuff.

Youtube is a great advertising tool. Prince's stuff on youtube will expose his music to a whole new audience, especially the younger ones who may not be very familiar with his work. It will actually help him sell more and gain him more fans. Besides most of the all time great artists are on yoututbe, Prince should be there too.

i admit that I will sometimes (not often) listen to a few songs on youtube. And I would not really consider buying the songs. Some of them I have had at one time. (some I have on vinyl) but others I do not have and would not buy ('don't fear the reaper' by BOC for example).

So there is some argument that people that listen for free do not buy. but then again I would like to watch some videos that I would buy if they were released (concert footage. some of it really not very good quality. but still better than nothing)

the problem is that he is not legeally releasing them. He makes his stuff so hard to access. He removed the revolution rehersal for songs like 17 days, when doves cry etc (thank god i got them before he had them removed) If he put them on a dvd, id buy it in a heartbeat.

Isn't it scary that there is programming that can detect the image and sound and identify the music to check if it's copyrighted?

No you can't, there's plenty of blocked videos on you tube from all kinds of artists around the world.

Most all big name musicians signed to big labels have the same policies in place for YouTube these days unless they've agreed to Googles royalty scheme.

I think this is what the OP was getting at, but I stopped reading before your post because the discussion went a bit off track, so I'm not sure if anybody else explained it. This is the reason why they are altered. There is very advanced software now (with more being developed all the time) that can reach out to a website and identity a song or video if it's being played at it's original speed or in it's original "look". It's only a matter of time until the software will be able to identify the songs and videos even if they've been altered.
