Can I Play With U? Alternate version?

Okay, So I'm listening to an alternate version of the classic Miles Davis/Prince recording, "Can I Play With U". It's much longer and as different vocal and instrument parts and the quality is pretty damn good, the song sits at 6:31. After further listening I've noticed Prince's lead distortion guitar is pull WAAAAY back on the chorus parts, it's got Miles tumpet more up front and short adlib by miles. Also, I have to say it again, this is much longer, more parts.

Anyone know where this came from and/or why this all of a sudden surfaced? Much better than the already circulating awesome version. It could very well be "the extended version" if you are so inclinced to call it that. Love it!!!!!!

This is the coolest Prince thing I've heard in years!!!! It would have made a nice addition to the Box O' Chocolates Boot. Simply amazing, I gotta listen again for my 20th something time.

An extended version was supposed to be released on the 6-CD version of "The Last Word" by Miles Davis:

So I guess an engineer had to prepare the track for release at some point in 2001... Maybe he's not working for WB anymore... biggrin

It's not circulating as a lossless file, unfortunately... But I guess a 320-kbps MP3 is good enough.

Is NOT fan made, More vocal and instrument parts, as I stated above. An extended version of the song.

Fantastic.

It's the sound of prince at the height of his creativity.

So funky.

I'm off to put together a new disc of 1985-1986 outtakes.

Again Miles trumpet playing style doesn't fit the song at all...

It probably works better on "Sticky Wicked", but I still think "Can I Play With U?" is a highly enjoyable song. Now neither the short nor the long/extended version would have fitted on "Tutu", but that's another problem.

wow!. just shows that the '86/'87/'88 horns were such an integral part of the classic P sound. As for Miles , well he's was just amazing.

Now how the hell do i save it and get it onto my pod! -

Amazing.

The arrangement reminds me a bit of the complex arrangement of Crystal Ball. Prince put a lot of work into this, and it's great to finally hear the track at it's original speed.

I first heard this song on the Crucial CD, which I bought in Davis in the early 90's for something like $85! I love that I now have pretty much all those tracks in much clearer and in this case extended versions. I really was shocked by how funkier the track sounds with this version.

I played it for a friend who thought Prince must be behind the release, but that's not logical. The noise reduction and hiss would never let this see an official release. As good as this version is, it just makes me want the official release of this track.

I would buy it.
