and how do I know I'm getting an official disc and not a bootleg?

I'm practically begging Prince to take my money for his music he won't sell it to me, but to others.

I know it's not the most convenient thing, but when I ordered mine, I requested the newspaper also plus it came in the cardboard sleeve.

I really don't see the difference between downloading something and buying it off of ebay when it is not available either from the artist, the label, in a brick-n-mortar stores, online retail outlets, or for sale digitally.

When he releases it in a manner in which I can purchase it myself from any of those outlets, then I will buy it.

Until then, even if I buy it on eBay, he's still losing out on MY money.

Well, that's true in these types of cases where he's getting paid up front. I just don't agree with piracy of official items, Prince's or anyone else. Hell, I even told my cheapskate older sister to go buy her own copy of some CD (non-Prince) she wanted me to copy for her. It's like if I can fork out the money for it, so can she. I just don't go with the 'I'm entitled to everything for free' attitude that some people have today and then they bitch because folks are out of jobs, but that's a whole 'nother topic. lol

lol. You've got to be kidding me.

Prince has given his fans the finger for decades.

Decades.

who started it?

when was the very first instance where prince gave his fans the finger, entirely unprovoked?

when were his fans sitting round doing nothing illegal at all, and prince just decided to give them the finger?

we could say, 'well he deserves to be treated that way cuz thats karma for the music he has stolen from other people, the musicians he has ripped and credited himself with all the work, the disrespect with which he has treated many people throughtout his career, what goes around comes around and if he's too stupid to figure that out then what difference does it make what we do?'...

and we could say that and have half a valid point. but it would be totally beside the point.

everyone here knows there is no law stating that it is OK to bootleg his work, breach his copyrights, alter his artwork, use his image and likeness, without his consent, or slander him.

some might say he doesnt sell as many records as he could because he's been forced into a narrow corner of release methods, and he's been forced into that corner by his fans. forced to localize his releases and get paid up front, to ensure that 1. he receives proper payment and 2. his music gets into people's hands, in a legitimate way.

i will happily retract everything i've said if you can provide me one instance, the very first instance, where prince just decided, for no apparent good reason, for no good legal reason, to give his fans the finger.

Why did he close the npgmc after promising "lifetime membership". And no forewarning...just one day, the site doesn't work.

Until it's officially available online as a download or in a store in my country, then I have no desire, motivation or need to buy it. I don't feel like I'm entitled to it for free. But if I'm buying it off of ebay, how is that any different than buying a concert ticket from a scalper? And we know he doesn't like that.

Anyway, I never really meant to get into a debate about the ethics of illegal downloading. My point was only that Prince's strategies for releasing his past several albums does in fact promote illegal downloading, because there are places and people he choses not to sell it to.

i dont know if it was ever made clear but i think it had something to do with a trademark fight with a company using the same 'name'.

****

to people who believe they are automatically entitled to access prince's music simply because it isnt in shops and he hasnt made it available to you in your area...

there is no law stating you simply MUST have prince's music, and therefore are entitled to acquire it illegally.

there is no such thing as 'promoting illegal downloads and bootlegging'. that's called 'passing the buck'. that buck stops here.

there is no law stating that slander is justified either.

but some folk never learn, even in the face of direct cease and desists, no, they have some warped justification to continue spewing vile filth about prince on the internet.

i made sure i learned, that no matter how much i might disagree with him on varying issues, or whether or not i like his music, its actually wrong and illegal to slander him.

everyone can put their point across in a diplomatic way, its not that hard if you really try. and sometimes, but rarely, maybe he does deserve a little kick for being remiss on some things,

but ultimately there is no legal protection for any of us who resort to outright vitriolic slander.

we have no point of legal recourse for bootlegging and illegally downloading his music either.

no point of recourse for releasing soundboards without his consent, and no legal recourse for altering his artwork and using his image and likeness without consent.

there's a reason those laws were put in place and no amount of dodge and weave justification, will change that.

if anyone has a problem with the laws which state we are not allowed to bootleg and illegally download and outright slander him, then i guess we can take action to appeal to have them changed.

good luck lol heart

p.s. i dont support the current music legal system. i cant stand copyright and i think once music is made public it should become collective property. so i'm not on some kick here defending the way things are, i'm simply trying to add some insight into why prince might be doing things his own way, now more than ever.

i also believe people should be free to say whatever they like however they like, and learn for themselves, without being harassed by lawyers. but prince was raised by the old-world system and he was hardly ever respected for using it to protect himself and still isnt to this day by people who continue to abuse the privelege of being alive in the same era as a musical giant such as he.

this too shall pass

if you tried telling me that I wouldn't have a Prince album months after it was released. The fact that I have not yet heard 20ten is crazy. This is Prince, my favorite. I never thought it would come to this!

when fans bootleg his music, use his image and symbol without consent, trash him and his websites on the internet, what do you expect?

granted, that may have nothing to do with his recent business decisions, but i dont blame him for doing things his own way,

through media that gladly accepts him and his work, without all the harsh negativity and blatant disregard for his rights as an artist.

he made a choice to make his money independently from his fan-base. he got paid what he wanted, without all the gripes, he got his music into the hands of a lot of people, without having to listen to any disrespect,

and now he's doing a tour to support all that, to crowds who are enjoying themselves without complaint.

when he first hit it big as an artist, he sold records. people bootlegged his music. then he went on the net and tried releasing music there.

his internet endeavors invited all sorts of degrading criticism, violation of his rights, and an almost constant slew of harassment from all angles.

he retaliated legally on all counts and was critisized for doing so. he was called a 'tyrant', a 'small and pathetic man', a 'sheister and con-man',

and told repeatedly that his music 'sucks', is 'garbage', that his websites are 'hideous', and that 'all he cares about is money'.

he has every justifiable right to localize his music releases in whatever domain he likes and get paid with respect for his artistry.

he has every right to hold off on a US CD release until the mood and timing is right to co-incide with his upcoming shows.

he has every right to not have his CD in shops, every right to do as he pleases, every right to walk away from his fan-base, and every right to return to it when it pleases.

what he does with his music is the only aspect of his life in which he has any true freedom. let him have it.

none of which has anything to do with Prince's lack of inspired output in recent years, which was the point of the original post.

Why are you putting something you made up in quotation marks?

And when it comes to giving his fans the finger? Let's see - Controversy, Housequake, Uptown. And I'm not talking about the songs.

I suggest you do some further research on your chosen subject before polluting the internet any further.
