Prince still has PLENTY of magic. He uses it differently now and not everyone digs the same stuff, but at least once an album cycle there's some moment, recorded or live that makes people just stop and say "DAMN".

That's that magic coming through. You're not going to see that from a Taylor Swift or even a Lady Gaga or whatever modern artist you wanna use as comparison. Prince never lost any magic, he just uses it more sparingly now.

Maybe you can explain to me where i can find these 'magic' moments in his music these days? I'm craving to hear an interesting drum beat, bass line, guitar riff or cool lyric in his new music, I'd even be happy to hear a well recorded studio track with great choice of drum sounds guitar sounds.

The idea of hearing a well written song that actually sounds like it's been worked on for longer than a day in the studio seems to be a pipe dream now. I blame the whole 'jam' era that has clogged up his live shows for 15 years. Jamming on a groove for 10 minutes is ok, but a great song is WAY better. Too much time hanging out with Maceo Parker, Larry Graham etc, these guys have never written a great song in their lives. I'm sure the 'fams' well say all of his new songs are great... but if they really were that good the setlists would not be 25 year old songs (i thought the last time he was going to play these hits was about 7 years ago because of all the new music?).

Why is Prince always compared to the latest teen acts on this site? Justin Timberlake, Lady gaga, Taylor Swift etc, why not compare him to his own age group?. The guy has his finger so far off the pulse in regards to what kids listen to now, he's so out of touch it's embarrassing.

He tried to do the 'retro soul' thing with tracks like 'Satisfied' or 'Chelsea Rogers' but he ends up in this horrid middle ground, take a listen to the job Questlove and his team did on the last Al Green album ... thats how it should be done.

20 years ago Prince seemed like an unstoppable musical force that I really thought would always remain interesting ... boy did i get that wrong !! At best he's a 'greatest hits live act' in 2010.

Unfortunately the material doesn't get any stronger. There are no real magical moments or standout tracks on those albums.

Stop releasing music, if you don't have anything musically or lyrically interesting (compared to your highest standards) to say!

I know that's pretty tough for an artist, but the higher the standards the better the results...if any at all...lol

Prince is still very good and 20Ten is a clear example of this. One suggestion to become even better is to focus a little more on quality and a little less on quantity. High prolificity is admirable, but too much prolificity can delute the quality, especially if one has been very prolific for many years.

One way to go could be to skip releasing an album one year and keep recording but at a somewhat slower pace with even more thought going into each song. Then release an album the next year. The result could be a number of very, very good songs on one album instead of a number of very good songs on two albums.

i agree with the second part. If prince releases a mediocre album next year, i'll be disappointed, but if he releases something good in 2012 then it'll be worth the wait

Second question, yea, I compared him to modern popular acts because often people equate "recapturing the magic" to being popular.

To compare him to his own age group, even his 80's peers? Well I get in trouble for that stuff, but what the hell. MJ is...nah not going to do that one, so let's say Madonna, she goes to dance clubs has a producer steal the beats she likes and talks over them. Who else? Is even Stevie Wonder held to as high a standard as Prince? Which of Prince's contempories should we look to for the example?

I would say what's up with bemoaning Prince's jam band mentality and then using Questlove, leader of the modern jam band as comparison.

If you don't think there is anything worthwile in his recorded output of late, try the live stuff and if it's not there for you, you'll always have your Dirty Mind CD to jam while you complain on the org. That's why we're here.
