My impression:

Prince has gone from his heyday of it being about the (excellent) music to today, where it seems that he uses new music as a pretense for financial ventures that rarely deliver on the promise of a return to excellent music.

So, he leaks new songs from public radio stations and other websites. His website fails to deliver what many of his subscribers were led to believe they were buying. He airs a song while announcing tour dates and referencing his "legendness" and legacy-act status.

The music becomes the gimmick propping up sub-par publicity events.

I miss the days when the music was the prize.

Welcome to the dawn.

It´s all about ego and money. The lyrics of his songs like this one, go to show for it. Prince values getting paid over getting great art out. Ain´t no deal with Prince unless you pay him at aleast a million in advance. He feels the internet is dead because he can´t make money that way on there. He tried it with the clubs and lotus, getting paid first but obviously you can only con your fans so many times untill they stop joining your little money makers. They say Prince changes his ´creative mind´ every day and that that was the main reason for all the constantly broken promises. We should just accept that and live up to that ´fact´. But that isn´t the case. It isn´t a case of a ´creative genius´s quarks´. It´s a case of a gigantic ego never ever willing to admit that its wrong and a terribly devastating drive to make money and have the lifestyle of an Arab prince, a French king or an Egyptian pharao. That´s what drives Prince much more than putting out quality music.

Get a grip on reality. You have had so many artist in the past who at P's age were living in the streets without a nickel to their name. If P can get someone to give him a million dollars a show good for him. He will not be getting that kind of money too much longer as he is getting too old so he might as well enjoy himself.

Go watch the Unsung espoide about George Clinton who is 70 years old and still touring because he needs the money. You are the type of person that would love to see P struggling. Very sad

But that isn´t the case. It isn´t a case of a ´creative genius´s quarks´. Prince is pissed off by justified criticism and if Prince doesn´t get paid, Prince doesn´t release. It´s that simple.

See e.g. the release of 20ten , a turd that cost him probably one week of real work producing it and that could qualify as an insult of his 80´s work. This gets released only in Europe through a newspaper and only AFTER getting paid a million or so. Then he follows up by the END of 2010 with a ´deluxe edition´ for the American suckers among his fans. See also his ´return to form´with Musicology and 3121, sell outs to today´s sound of popular music. See the latest tour with the enormous prices and the concert in Dubai. See the Vegas shows etc.

It´s all about money and a gigantic ego that is never ever willing to admit that its wrong and that is suffering from a terribly devastating drive to make money and have the lifestyle of an Arab prince, a French king or at least an Egyptian pharao.

That´s what drives Prince much more than putting out quality music. He doesn´t care if 20ten is shit. He feels people, especially most of his fans do not deserve better music and he probabaly thinks the music is prety good himself. At least better than much out there, which could in fact be true, but which doesn´t take away from the fact that Prince isn´t Prince anymore and ´the dawn´, whatever he wanted to say with it, but most at least expected a lot of great music, is in fact one great big lie.

If you think me or anybody takes your posts seriously lauren richardson then its you who needs to get a grip.

The fact is, Prince is only about ego and money not about great music anymore.

Deal with it.

Is it me, or has Prince finally figured out how to slow down piracy and make you anticipate a new album? The site must be being hit pretty hard, I'm having to hear it in bits and pieces.

Naw, that's just the radio station's own website, they are also streaming other stuff besides Prince's new song. If you go to the usual places to listen to it you will not have any bandwidth issues. It wil be all yours.

i disagree, with all due respect and no offence intended, its not 'well put'.

its possible to tell it like it is without being cruel and slanderous. yes prince does have a huge ego and he does love money. he got that way from 30 years of making it his business and his job to prioritize those things. without either of them he wouldnt have a career, imo.

he's among the mega performers of our era. money and ego go hand in hand with that status. whether he wants to drop both of them or not is up to him, but if he doesnt, let him be what he wants to be.

he likes his cake and eat it too, makes his own bed and he lies in it every night. if there's anything about his life he's not happy with he can change it anytime he likes, but you have to remember he's conditioned to be this way, so its not as easy for him to change as we might like to think.

re the music: i'm under the impression 20ten is the album 'we' asked for. so many fans requested a return to all the old sounds, the old funk, the linn, the synths etc, the old style vocal performances...

whether we feel he delivered or not is one thing, and maybe up to personal taste, but imagine how he'd feel, if he gave us this album as an answer to our requests, and we turn around and trash it? is it any wonder he throws his hands up in the air, surrounds himself with yes-people and those who give him 'peace', no matter how good or bad for him they are.

why should he listen to his fans if we cant uphold some kind of respect for him whether we like his current output or not? would you listen to people who thrash you for giving them what they want? or at least doing your best?

yes, there are parts of prince that i do not agree with, like the money and the ego thing, but in my simple mind, there's no point riding him for it. not to say we're not entitled to voice an opinion, but maybe think about WHO ur speaking of and what kind of life this man has lived for the last 30 years, before lacing our opinions with so much derision.

IF prince is in some kind of karmic debt, dont worry, what goes around comes around. his ego will get slapped about by much bigger dogs sooner or later, and his money wont give him the one thing he really, really wants, so ner prince.

in the meantime go easy on the guy, he's 52 going on 16. live his life for 30 years and see how you come out the other end of it. if ur not addicted to attention and cash by then i'd be very surprised.

he might be able to change ways, but he cant change his nature. "rich friends" is an ok song. its not terrible, and its not super fantastic. to me it shows how mentally isolated he is, and that deserves some compassion imo.

even though he can be a prick, its not easy being prince. heart

this too shall pass

It's easy to agree with somebody's point but then criticise it for being 'slanderous' while you end it with much 'love'.

Get real robinhood. Prince has a very easy life, hates anybody that dare criticise him and wants only yes men around him. He is on a money and ego trip like never before. There is no real quality in his music anymore. Listen to Everybody loves me. It has just become a joke. What he produces these days he makes and forgets within a day. There is no soul in it. No real effort and he uses his music as a vehicle to crticise his fans (no more candy 4 u, P funk etc.).

You may not like or agree with the way I put THE FACTS out there but that doesn't make them less real or less pressing. Prince used to be about really great music too. That used to be his TOP priority. Now he is all about ego and money and music is just the means for him to satisfy them.

By the way, I didn't call any names, yet you called him a prick and my post 'slanderous'. Please...

With so many "fans" who are totally disgusted with Prine and his new mature music, would you not be willing to make more money if you can? As far as his new music is concerned: If you don't like it, leave it to others who do. Rants and whining by the usual suspects here are not going to stop many of us from continuing to dig Prince.

As far as him making music for money, what do record companies do with these young acts? They push them for a certain sound or image. Remember Dr. Dre used to wear makeup and the balloon pants. wink

Funny jab. Not. Prince has never been a commercial artist that didn´t care about the quality of his output.

That was one of the great things that set him apart from most other artists. Always real quality music. Now he just sells that all out while sycophants cheer him for it.

That´s sad and depressing. Not just for most of his fans, but also for him and music in general.

And that needs to be said.

I'm listening to Splash right now, and I always feel so shocked by the obvious difference in quality between his older and newest tracks. Old Prince would find new Prince appalling.

It´s sadly all about ego and money. The lyrics of his songs like this one, go to show for it. Prince values getting paid and being right over getting great music out.

Ain´t no deal with Prince unless you pay him at least a million in advance and let him call all the shots. He feels the internet is dead because he can´t make money that way on there. He tried it with the clubs and lotus, getting paid first and doing whatever pleased him, but obviously you can only con your fans so many times untill they stop joining those kind of money makers.

They say Prince changes his ´creative mind´ every day and that that was the main reason for all the constantly broken promises over the years. We should just accept that and live up to that ´fact´. But that isn´t the case. It isn´t a case of a ´creative genius´s quarks´.

Prince has always been a commercial artist. Great that you finally realize that as well. Better late than never.

Funny jab.

How does the fact that you don't like Prince's current music prove that he doesn't care about it ?

I´ve asked myself the very same question and also posted it on a couple of threads over the years. lol

It´s one thing for Prince to have lost the "feel" and the ear for how his music sounds today and how it used to sound, even if he used the very same instruments, but what I don´t get is why some of his longtime bandmembers don´t feel what the fans feel. Seems to me that it´s not because they´re "Yes" men, but because they genuinely believe that the music is great when they´re in the studio and the music is blasting from the loudspeakers.

The same goes for those music journalists and certain fans who first hear his music during a press conference or even in his studio and write about how it is " a return to form" when it´s actually pretty forgettable and bland after a couple of repeated listening sessions.

Really....how would 1985 Prince feel about 2010 Prince´s current output? And shouldn´t Prince himself know best that just using an old Linn drum computer ( or a plug-in Linn sound) does not equal his brilliant ideas and creativity and magic that he used to come up with in the studio in the past?

To be honest, there are a couple of songs on 20Ten that I really like, but some of the songs are so embarrassingly bad that it´s hard to believe that they are composed by the same man who gave us 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign of the Times etc.

Sure, many artists before him lost their spark after a certain point in their career but this is an artist who still delivers great shows with passion and energy but who, despite being a musical genius, genuinely seems to think that his recent use of the old tricks is on par with the masterpieces that he created back in the day.

For some reason, it's not working for me.

You're not missing much. :-/

there are some parts that need filling, love the guitar, I hope this isn't the finish cut though, it drags a bit. Could use a touch of something, maybe some linn, maybe some background sound like people eating out at a posh restaurant or something...

Excuse me but you are the one who is imagining how he must feel and how hard life must be for him. You constantly blame me doing things you do yourself because it hurts to let the truth sink in.

I think it's a good attempt at turning a bad idea into a song. To me, it sounds like he started recording before he was done composing and writing. neutral
