I was a bit surprised when i saw him at #7 on the vh1 greatest artist list. Not that i think he doesnt deserve it (because he does), its just that he is generally an underrated artist. His stock will continue to rise.

I was surprised too! I had only recorded the last hour of the countdown since it was so long and I was sure he would atleast be in the top 20. But after i saw the artists from 20 to 10, I was worried I had missed him. I was impressed that he passed up Madonna, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. Only the all time heavyweights were ahead of him.

I was however disappointed that Alicia Keys only put him 4th on her list. Nina Symone was 3 and Michael Jackson 1. Nina Symone?

It always amazes me how all these so called "experts" rank MJ ahead of Prince. Dont get me wrong, i like alot of mjs stuff (off the wall, thriller and some songs on bad) but he wasnt the overall musician that Prince is. Sure he sold more, then again sales dont mean a thing. His record company spent bucket loads of money promoting his work, he had other songwriters work on his albums, his music videos were often the most expernsive of their time and he had celebrity guest stars in those videos, little wonder he sold more.

Lyrically he doesnt compare to prince. His lyrics (the ones he wrote) were catchy and effective but simple. I dont think he ever wrote a song as lyrically good as When Doves Cry or If i was your girlfriend. He made six albums ina 22 yr solo carrear, 2 of which are masterpieces (OTW AND TH) two others which are good (Bad, Dangerous) and two of which were mediocre for the most part (history and invincible). Prince on these other hand made atleast seven albums which received generally great reviews from critics and three of which are considered masterpieces (1999, PR AND Sign). Plus Prince has written so much great stuff for other artists (manic monday, nothing compares to u, songs written for the time)

MJ needed guitarists like eddie van halen, slash and carlo santana to play on his records. Prince is such an amazing an underrated guitarist himself. Just listen to the end of lets go crazy, begining of WDC, Gold or other amazing solos he has done over the years. Plus he plays over 20 instruments . I find Princes ability to play so many instruments so well far more impressive then MJ's moonwalking. And lyrically prince is on another level

MJ -7.5/10

Prince-10/10

Unfortunatley, a lot of the music videos that I searched so hard for were only on there because they were altered slightly by added borders or pitch differences.

Other than that, other footage is just there because no one has snitched haha.

I hope Prince eases up on the whole Youtube thing though, I feel that he'd be more successful if he let people listen to his music on there. I mean, face it, how many new fans or going to buy an album just to check him out? People always resort to Youtube unless they already know the artist and their material. He'd have more people discovering his music, a lot of the music I listen to now were random finds on the site.

So, I agree with most of you. Prince would have more recognition if it was easier to access his material.

And together we'll stare into silence.

I'm sorry, I had written a reply, of course, but something went wrong and only your quote showed up. (??) So I'll try again:

What I said was that I agree with you 100% ... I like MJ's music and he was without any doubt a fantastic entertainer, unique in his own way! BUT Prince has such a diverse style of music, he can play funk, soul, rock, jazz - anything - and make it sound great! Plus he plays all those instruments, especially the excellent guitar work!! Michael was always a huge star, Prince is underrated in general, in my opinion.

I don't know how these things are getting on there. I've tried posting some of my videos and they immediately get canceled for "copyright violation." And I'm talking about concert footage!

Right now, so much stuff of Prince's... tv appearances, concerts, bootleg videos, unreleased official videos...

It's all over youtube. And it's really working towards creating an awareness of Prince's potential and legacy of creative muscle.

I'm in Los Angeles right now, and there's this funky old audiophile shop in Santa Monica called Optimal Enchantment run by an older gentleman in wood paneled room filled with vinyl and monolithic speakers.

In the middle of demonstrating $20k type audio equipment for my friend, the proprietor stopped and said "check this out! A friend sent me this link to Prince performing at a George Harrison tribute, and it's incredible. I don't even like Prince. He's a genius"

And the 65+ year old man proceeded to play the clip of this on youtube. (One of the few clips of this).

If you look at comments and views, I think that these relatively unknown gems and the sheer mass amount of material is finally coming to public light. And Prince's credibility is forming into something of legendary proportions... and to new people on a big scale.

I think it's a great thing.

Until now only the die-hards knew about these goodies. The largest part of these vids (the entire concerts) were already available on the internet (illegal ofcourse) but very true, Youtube is an easy way for normal fans to get a chance to watch this great footage and to let new people get acquainted with his talent and diversity, I think it will give him new fans. Around 2006, lots of Prince's stuff was already on Youtube, the same vids as we see now, until he had them all removed. Hopefully he won't do it again, such a shame.
