Everything changed, I guess, after 2001. The jazz era was so weird, controversial and puzzling that everything explode and the fanbase started a civil war.

Before 2001, Prince fans were surely more or less similar; if they disagreed, it was about the overall quality of the new album, and the criticism was OBJECTIVE/CONSTRUCTIVE AND PRAGMATIC; ex: "Love Symbol is truly strong, a new classic" --> "hmm yeah it's good, but I don't like Tony M and the raps, it's too much" or "Batman rocks man!" --> "well, it's a silly pop album but I'm glad it's selling so well!"

Nowadays there are a lot of different kind of fans: the 2001-2003 freaks/nerds, the ones who claim that Prince lost it forever after TGE, the ones who can't stand the 04-10 era, the ones who dismiss his pop albums (Batman, D&P, Rave, 3121...), the 80s radicals ("Prince lost it after Lovesexy"), the "hey the late-90s were not that bad after all" ones, etc. and of course there are some fans who will buy anything the man releases and who will tell you that Prince has never released a bad song...

2001 was the turning point, as I'e said; after that there has not been an united & strong fanbase anymore...the civil war destroyed that unity and multiple kind of fans appeared...

I think it's for a number of reasons. Not in any particular order.

It's normally a sport thing. Football club opposing teams hate each other or the competitor club. That kind of fan hate is about winning and losing. When it comes down to Prince in this light, some fans think that Prince has made them lose. Either in terms of money or in music of his they own.

Secondly, on the board we have Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Jehovah Witness, Buddhist, Zen or other beliefs. Most people with some aspect of belief in any religion/God/good/evil etc believe that people shouldn't be judged but forgiven and accepted for and with their faults. Atheists, complete non-believers or agnosts, believe people should be judged. So religious beliefs influence opinions too.

This is not true.

True. I should have said "believe it's ok to judge people" and as far as Prince goes on the forum. Judge harshly.

There isn't a Christian on here who doesn't judge. Goes for any other religion too.

I can't even take you seriously beyond this point. Stop filling people's heads with poison and misinformation and get your shit together.

You're hilarious. Telling a person online what to do lol Who are you? My parent, God, my partner, friend, lover or my shrink? What a joke you are.

Besides, did I ask you to take me seriously and I am responsible for what people fill their heads with? Your posts are so beyond belief, I stopped reading them after two or three. Perhaps you should do the same. lol

Not everything Prince touches turns to gold, or is anywhere close to being a hit, radio friendly, or something that the general listener is going to be interested in. It means you have a brain, an opinion, and Kaunas to say so. Prince's biggest problem has always been having too many yes men around him. He doesn't need yes-fans as well. We are his only real voice and feedback of true reason, balance, and critique.

Implying that if someone doesn't agree with all the critics they don't have a brain?

You have a way with words Ernest. And it's not very pretty. I do love the way you're always fathering Prince though. It's as if you always know exactly what's best for him. lol Yeah. Prince definitely has a lot of parents on this board. lol

well, this Prince person is known for causing a stir so it makes sense that the same controversy would be prevalent among his fanbase.

we can point the finger at how judgmental we can be, but Prince can also be very judgmental too.

in my opinion, we are not his one and only true voice of reason, and i'm not sure he'd know it if he heard it anyway.

for me the question is more about why we get hostile or petulant if Prince does something we dont like.

maybe its just easy to take out our frustrations on someone who isnt here, and is apparently as nebulus as a nebula (did i spell that right?)

seems to me no matter what we say Prince will do as he pleases anyway, so it might not be wise to presume that our views count for anything much in his purple bubble.

he might deliver the funk we ask for, or the rock, or he might get an over-all view of the general concensus and work his next album about 'consumer demand',

but other than that i dont think the harshness some of us display turns him on.

has Prince lost it? i dont know. he may have lost a bit of this and a bit of that, or maybe he just has a broken heart. boo hoo.

maybe he just does what it takes to get through the days doing what he loves and all he really expects in return is a little appreciation and respect. (and an advance lol)

doesnt seem like he's asking much, but if its too much for us to handle then so be it i guess.

either way, as long as he gets paid then i guess that's at least one less thing for him to sulk about lol

this too shall pass

umm.."yes-fans" is a bit of an oxymoron. A fan is a fan is a fan...

anything else is..well, everyone is a critic. I WOULD SAY 99% of his music is highly acceptable. the 1% is still better than most others. I can only say this about a few other artists..very few.

What is healthy is a quote that speaks the truth, heres a sample; I love Prince's music, I AM A FAN..there are some songs I'm not entirely crazy about, but as a whole...I AM A FAN.

Thats healthy.

sorry but...Everything else is just baiting, critiquing and judging. save that for American Idol. please.

Again, great post. Loving is so much easier and healthier than hating. A fan is here to give love!! Critics can do the rest..

And just because the music is of a different genre than you personally don't like, doesn't make the music crap!! Everyone has different taste...the great thing about Prince is that he can successfully create so many different genres!

Yes maybe. And I'm not religious.

But I'm not here to tear Prince apart. I'm a "fan" and you can define whatever your own conceptual or associative meaning is of that word. My meaning is I respect and admire someone for what they do. Doesn't mean I like all the music though and also doesn't mean that based on my subjective opinion "that the music is bad" it just means "I" don't like it. As for the members on the forum. They are just a name behind a screen.

Here is the reality of the situation to me.

Listening to older Prince stuff takes to a place that most musicians can't me to. There was a cool rebel attitude to his early work. No one else could have made his LPs from Dirty Mind - Come(many copied but never hit the mark) PERIOD. After come his music was a bit by the numbers I KNEW what I was going to hear for the most part. Which is not a bad thing.

However with any music for anyone. There is an era that you will love and that will be what you will listen to for the rest of your life. Like a person who grew up in sixties will always tell "real music died with Motown" or "Stax". A person who loved 80's "Hair Band" will say "Nirvana ruined all rock music with grundge" Its all a matter of taste. Everyone is entitled to like whatever they like and in turn dislike what they dislike. It does not mean I am not a true fan because '2010' for example doesn't appeal to me.

cool I agree whole heartedly! When I see people on here..who are suppose to be members of an online "fan" community, "dissin'"...my Prince..I wonder. I love Prince. Sometimes I don't like a song on an album, but I know someone else will. I pretty much love 20Ten except for Everybody Loves Me...but Prince just felt like doing that one...so cool...he's the man..he can do it. Anyway, all I'm saying is that I thought we were all real Prince fans...just lovin' the man and his music. Just disregard a song you don't dig and move on to the next. I'm Sticky Like glue on PRince!!! biggrin

I have no answers for you, but if my understanding of what a bait thread is coerrect (and I had one of my threads locked because a mod said it was one), this is a bait thread and will probably be locked. Maybe not, I didn't really think mine was bait. It's all OPINIONS. There is no right or wrong ones. My problem is when people present opinions as fact. That's just ignorant.

I'm just saying...

Really?

As if taking something out of context to misrepresent facts makes any sense.

That goes for your second post too. Go back and read in original context. Implying that a poster without an opinion, criticism or the balls to say so, means they have the semantical feature of being not only -animate and - human but a +plant.

Semantics aside, if someone thinks brain usage can be measured by being a critic of Prince then lol please, share the next joke.

You seem to be biased when reading posts and interpreting them. Backchaining is something else then reversing a proposition. Maybe if you let loose a little you might not feel threatened or offended by posts that weren't necessarily meant that way. Peace.

the crowds in europe seem to be enjoying his shows, apparently he's performing really well too. seems he's succeeding in bringing some happiness to people to this very day.

he may or may not be clinging to yesteryear, or perhaps he's just paying his bills doing what he loves, but either way, he's making people happy and he's getting something out of it too.

if you dont like his records, then you dont have to buy them i guess. he might not care a hoot what you do with your money, when there are thousands of people all over the world who still respect him.

thousands of people who never clung so tight to his every breath so as to become obsessed with the imaginary sense of authority they feel their opinions must have over one of the greatest music legends of our time.

i guess their just grateful he's still around and they can go see him in concert. seems a reasonable attitude to me.

I dont know why people are attacking prince for his recent output. Name me one other artist in their fifties who's still making hits and groundbreaking music? And no Madonna doesnt count, Prince too could work with some bi producer, do a duet with a britney spears or someone like that and get a no 1 hit.

The fact is that most artists are at their best in their 20s and 30s and thats when they do their best work. Prince is no exception

Granted between 1996-2003 Prince relased too much music with no quality control, too many songs etc. But his output from 2004 until now is solid and respectable for an older artist. Quite frankly, if you havent liked a song he's done in the last six years, then maybe its time to stop being a fan and stick to the older stuff.

Prince still makes a song once in a while that i personally like- black sweat, chelsea rodgers etc. Thats why i'll want to buy his future records as well. There's nothing wrong with what he's done in the past six years. No great artist his age is still making their best music. Prince's work in the 80s and some of it in the 90's is more then enough for him to be one of the greats. Anything after that is just a bonus
