remedial musicology: name that instrument, voice, etc...

Hey

Often i'm listening to prince music and don't know what instrument i'm hearing, so it would be nice if some musicians or musically literate people would enlighten me concerning some things... i'll show my bliss (ignorance) if u show your power (knowledge) smile

for example, in the song 'come', theres a load of lovely horns playing, but i don't even know what kind of horns they are. do i need to be more specific?

also wondering who sings the intro for that song 'everywhere' on rainbow children.

that's all i wonder at the moment, but anything anyone wants to type about music details would be mighty interesting.

many thanks!

I hear trumpets, muted trumpets, and saxophone in the song "Come". Love that song. Love that album. Not real sure if there is a trombone in there or not. There is a woodwind sounding instrument, too. Either clarinet or soprano saxophone. Although that could be an electronic voice used there. Not real sure though.

"Come" - NPG Hornheadz - trumpets, trombones (muted and open), saxophones. There's also a clarinet solo presumably by Cathy J (or is it a soprano-sax?... hmmm)

The female vocals on "Everywhere" are by the vocal group Milenia.

^Haha. Yeah, I'm fairly sure it's a clarinet but sometimes I second guess myself. I'm more a brass person. Any woodwind specialists out there who can confirm?

^^Hey, toejam. I have played B-flat and bass clarinet and a bit of tenor and bari sax. My sister plays alto sax. All I know is that the sop sax and B-flat clarinet can sound quite alike sometimes.

thank you toejam and rubymoon53 for your lovely help! if i may ask about specifics, just want to see if i can identify which is which, going by the time that each instrument enters the song, so...

0:19 A: the first horns sound i hear -- more than one -- is this trumpet and trombone together or??

1:25 B: a new sound comes in -- is this the muted trumpet?

2:09 C: is this the saxophone?

6:44 D: so this solo that goes thru most of the rest of the song is the clarinet or soprano sax?

i loooove it....

while we're on the subject of horns, in the song mountains, i'm thinking that the horns throughout are the same as the first ones heard on come, it that so?

Certainly soprano sax.

0:19 - Trumpet, Trombone and Saxs... if not more

1:25 - Harmon-muted Trumpets and Saxs

2:09 - Tenor Sax

6:44 - Harmon-muted Trumpet

7:05 - Trombone

7:14 - Alto Sax (playing over the other horns)

7:37 - Clarinet or Soprano Sax. Chickenman reckons Soprano Sax, so I'll go with him.

"Mountains" is primarily Tenor Sax and Trumpet
