Pheremone is like Peach???????? eek

not exactly a carbon copy, but for me it was a "Peach sequel": similar drum line, repetitive rhythm, funk/rock sound etc. When I first listened to Pheromone I thought: "oh, ok, another funk/rock song in the vein of Peach, I'm gonna skip this"...I do admit, though, that Pheromone is darker and nastier than Peach, which was light and poppy.

I think that Peach is still the blueprint of rock songs like Pheromone, So Far So Pleased, half of Chaos & Disorder, etc...

I don't hear rock at all in "Pheremone" which was originally used as an instrumental for a BET music video show credit sequence. Holy shit! I can't believe it sounds like upbeat blues rock to you (which is what Peach is). We must hear music in a completely different way.

I actually made joke cover version of Pheremone called Guinevere back in 1994 on a cassette recorder... it can be found on the myspace link below.

Well everyone interprets music differently! I think those songs I listed from New Power Soul are as strong as anything from any album he has ever done.

That's the whole point of these threads, to express your point of view on the music and let others express theirs. In the exchange perhaps we can open our ears to something others have heard, where others hear brilliance in songs we dismissed and vice-versa. vica

I was thinking the same thing. Pheromone is in a crazy purple crack head league of it's own. Nothing sounds quite like it. I think it ranks right up there with anything he did in the 80's. Completely original head bobbing greatness.

Come ranks pretty high on my list for pheromone alone.

I remember the first time i heard it as the instrumental on BET. It stopped me in dead in my tracks! "WHat the hell is this funked up badness?" I asked myself in astonishment. And for an entire week i would tune in to that sorry ass BET video show just to hear the opening and closing credits.

Prince had fallen out of my graces by now. This was the 90's. I hate just about anything Prince related from the 90's. I remember thinking to myself that, that was the type of music that Prince would have made when he had his shit going on.

I didn't realize till much later that it was in fact Mr. Prince responsible for this out of this world groove that I couldn't wrap my head around.

This was around the time Prince had gone into the "walk don't walk" "Daddy pop" "Most Beautiful Girl in The World" "Jughead" 90's bubble gum phase that he has never quite recovered from.

yes

Maybe my favorite CD single period...hmm....maybe Gett Off, but anyway. Space (acoustic mix) is always on my Prince-troduction mixes for friends...especially the females wink

Definitely agree with someone earlier that Lovesign should have been on Come. I was in L.A. at the time and it received a lot of airplay at the time.

Title track is a sho'nuff classic Prince song. Went to a Prince vs MJ party in NYC after Musicology (East Rutherford)... Come made people lose their minds! Despite the lyrics, I think it's a very accessible track for non fans.

Pheromone...lol, this one will filter out the true freaks from the wannabe's, going along with

Dark works very well, I think its aged fairly well too. The sound is great, but the vocals are a bit too weakly delivered to rank up their with his best ballads. Maybe it's by design, though, sort of a wistful but "F-it" kinda mood.

Loose! I know it's just a matter of personal pref, but ...eh.

Solo was better...it gradually grew on me. "The angels they watch in wonder...." Someone mentioned TTD's Neither Fish... and I kinda get what they mean, except I don't think it's a bad thing. Especially like the change-up and sonically and lyrically in the sequence, it's a nice set up for Letitgo.

Letitgo. I can literally mix this with anything in the top r& b tracks today and it'll at least hold it's own. The deeper lyrical vibe coupled with that nice rhythm pushes it into the upper echelon.

All in all, a shame this one didn't get a chance on the radio. Come and Letigo were top of the R&B chart worthy, and with smooth videos, Letitgo might've been top 10 pop and Space could have been a nice pop charter.
