Prince - Purple Rain Purple Vinyl Question

Is there any way to tell on a sealed copy of the original Purple Rain LP if it is the black vinyl or purple lp? I saw a dealer with one and he had it sealed. He said he thought it was the purple vinyl but was not sure. I would like to buy it but only if its purple. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Check to see if any of the purple vinyl (LP, Pur) catalog numbers in the above link are printed on the album. Discogs isn't always 100% correct, but that should help.

So according to that page the Purple Vinyl was only released in Japan and Scandonavia? This one was USA so I guess it has to be black then. Thanks. I did not know that the purple pressing was not released in the US. That makes it much easier to recognize

Actually, I think it was released in the US, but that doesn't mean it wasn't manufactured in a different country. The site luv4u posted appears to have much more complete information, though. I'd play around with that for a bit and see what catalog numbers you can come up with. I'm finding this number for the US colored vinyl; 925 110-1

You could always just ask the guy to open it. No guarantee it's the original shrinkwrap anyway.

I have both, and the only indication is a sticker on the front. The UPC codes are the same. 7599-25110-1. Although my purple vinyl copy is a promo copy and has the gold promo imprint on the bottom right of the front cover. I know that the 7" of "When Doves Cry", the promo copy, was purple vinyl. I don't know if all PR albums that were purple were exclusively purple vinyl or not.

Purple Rain was recently re-pressed on 180 gram vinyl, but it will be black. I find it unusual (but not unprecedented) that that dealer still has a sealed 1980s copy. The US promo was on purple vinyl and it will have a gold foil "Promo" stamp on the bottom right hand corner - these promos were never shrink wrapped if I recall correctly.

But as Cerebus pointed out, do a little homework on the link Luv posted and match numbers and countries to the LP in question.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

an anniversary/deluxe edition would be cool in either of these variations

or these printed on vinyl for a new special edition would even be better

Mine is as well. Do you know if there were copies of the PR album on purple vinyl that weren't promo? I don't ever recall seeing them in stores at the time and I would search for everything Prince high and low at the time. lol

That's a really good question, but personally I have no idea. I just know I paid $25 for mine quite a few years ago. Paid $7 for "When Doves Cry" on purple 7". (Dollar an inch I guess LOL)

$25? Good deal. A friend of mine bought me one for my birthday several years ago at Let It Be in Mpls for $100.

I have two. I bought the first one at a record show...

I got the 2nd one at a garage sale for $3.00. No lie. She was selling all her vinyl.

Whoa...thanks for those pictures...That Purple Vinyl is just beautiful to look at..It would be so great if we could get back to the days of these being the main source of Listening to music. It just adds that extra dimension of collecting music, which is in non existence at the moment, unless you like to collect that type of thing wink

I know this is slightly off topic but there is also a USA only 12inch single purple vinyl, with the gold stamp....nice.

I think it's the 1999 remixes which has a BEAUTIFUL shade of purple vinyl, it's deeper than the PR one and it's absolutely gorgeous!
