prince and heavy metal

Just wondering if any heavy metal artists or bands have given props to Prince? Given the macho posturing many hm artists display do you think there are some closet Prince fans among them who are ashamed to admit their admiration?

So wait a second, you have NO CLUE if those bands ever gave him props, but you're going to list them as if they did?

Stop. This isn't fantasy prince play-along land. Ladychel is not going to marry Prince and "Sea of Everything" is not written about Tame.

Ozzy and Robert Plant DEFINITELY have given major props to Prince in the post.

Not sure about KISS or Metallica.

At least 3 former Guns N Roses members that I know of cite P as an awesome inspiration and talent.

Slash and Duff especially. As I recall, "Rocket Queen" was Prince-inspired.

I definitely read, or saw, Ozzy mention him. And I know Kirk Hammet has, but I'm not so sure about the rest of Metallica. Kirk is a bit more open to all kinds of music. James listens to other stuff, but it's like, Bob Sieger and shit. lol

I remember seeing an interview with Lemmy from Motorhead stating Prince was one of his favorites. If i remember correct it was from one of those vh1 countdown shows.

Strange because Slash referred to Prince "... looked like a fag" in a Rolling Stone mention covering an awards show back around 1990.

But maybe he just didn't like the outfit or the fact that Prince may have cold shouldered him.

oh yeah here is is:

"The fu**ing music awards . . . What happened was I got this phone call the day of the show asking if I wanted to go. We were nominated for two awards, and someone from the band needed to accept if we won. So me and Duff and our girlfriends all got drunk and flipped on down there after a stop at Carl Jrs. When we arrived, it was mass confusion, the whole paparazzi thing. I really didn't give a shit; I just wanted to hang out and have a good time. Anyway, we had third-row seats, and the show was real cheesy and boring. We were smoking and drinking wine, and all of a sudden we won this award. We weren't ready for it. I don't know what I said onstage, but it was short and sweet. I don't think there were too many "fu**s" in it. Then we went backstage. I met Lenny Kravitz, which was cool, but Prince blew us off. He and his entourage just ignored us when we walked by. He didn't say anything, and he probably didn't know who we were. I don't think we're what he'd call good company, and I really didn't care. He looked like a fag that night anyway. Afterward, we went back to our seats, and when the second award came, it was totally unexpected. I got up to the microphone and started to thank the people who helped us out over the years. I said "f***ing" again, and I knew it was live television, so I said, "Oops." But it just slipped out again and again and again. Once I started, that was it. It was just like using an adjective.

I'm not defending his statement, because it wasn't necessary to say Prince looked like a fag. However, 1990 was super fucked up out of his mind and probably on heroin, Slash. He's a totally different person now.

Are Josh Homme and Dave Grohl metal? If they are, they both admire Prince and have both covered his songs.

Somebody else did around 96 too...pretty useless fact as I can't remember any details. I just recall I was in a band and our guitarist didn't like Prince but was into The Manics, Sepultura...anything guitar heavy but he'd heared of Bambi because one of his fav bands had covered it a few weeks before

Didn't Slash play guitar on Rod Stewart's version of Peach. And according to Rick James' book he & Rod didn't really care for P as a person but liked his music.

I saw that show. Those two came off like a couple of drunken, 'Beavis and Butthead' idiots. Milli Vanilli swept the awards that show too, as I recall. Bad scene all around.

Also, I heard that Tommy Lee talks about his admiration for Prince in his autobio. Apparently, he even felt kind of bad that Mayte hooked up with him after their marriage broke up.

Josh Homme cover It on one of his Desert Sessions albums... Grohl did Darling Nikki as a b-side to a Foo Fighters' cd single.
