LOL its cute and the "from the heart of Minnesota, here comes the purple Yoda" line is classic but lets get real.

Your friends like it because it imitates dirty south hip hop. Not exactly cutting edge here. Could have been written like ten years ago.

Exactly. If people that like current music like it, that's reason enough right there for me to hate it. They have the entire radio to satisfy their dull taste. Prince needs to remain for those of us who still like to throwdown because someone has to satisfy our good taste and when he sells out on tracks like this, that's one less jam for us and one step closer to him completely selling out in the future if the thugged out Romper Roomers should happen to like it. Shit hop will never go out of style if even the older artists sell out to it. Someone has to be an alternative for those of us who have rhythm and taste and when Prince is gone, there's no one left because everyone else that jams has either retired or sold out.

I don't listen to or like any of the current music, nor hiphop/rap in general. So maybe that's why I love Laydown, since I haven't trashed my auditory system with crap off the radio.

When it comes to hating shit hop, I'm extremely smart. Unlike country or classical music, which are other genres I don't like either, I have no problem with having a "live and let live" mentality when it comes to those two genres because they've always had their own little stations and have never killed off jams and never were even a threat to jams. Shit hop, however, is the very reason there are no jams on mainstream R&B radio anymore so it is definately an enemy and deserves to be hated. I want to see the bullshit die and I hate even the slightest thing that helps to contribute to it. evillol

Great song...too short though....could have been a dance floor staple.

Now it will only see the light of day on some obscure Prince party dance floor.

there is the Laydown (Dr Fink's Purple Yoda Remix) avaliable, which is slightly longer. google is your friend.

on a related note, anybody no anything about that track?

Oh PLEASE!!! If he did release this song or Beginning Endlessly, no one would be paying attention to it but the hardcores. And even then, most of us wouldn't be diggin' it either (well, at least me anyway)!

So, no! This shit would NEVER be a hit!

I havent got a damn clue whats on the charts since about 10 or 15 years. Still, new CDs are virtually stacking in my rooms. What has so called current music got to do with me, with you, with anybody whos not into it? Whats your problem?

When was the last time Prince said "layin in the cut" in a conversation?

C'mon Boo.

[Edited 9/16/10 0:17am]

eh?

when did prince last say in conversation

" shoo bee doop'

or

"if im working at my jobba.."

or............endless list

Shoo be doop would not be used in a conversation - it is clearly a musical line. And "if I'm working at my job-ba" is all fine too. In those two examples, Prince is not trying to use "cool" words or phrases.

When he says 'layin in the cut" or "c'mon boo", I don't believe him. I call it being "age appropriate" - which does not mean he can't use cool words or slang. It simply means - that if you do use cool words or slang - you better be believeable.

In this case, my ears hear Prince trying to be something he is not. It sounds like an uncool Dad trying to impress his 19 year old son's friends with an established urban saying. The joke is on Dad of course as the son and friends immediately downgrade his credibility for trying too hard.

For me - the same problem occurs with Sticky Like Glue. I actually liked the song enough to manually edit out the "rap". The song works so much better without it.

Didn't care for Jam of the Year either. I never go back to it.

...I was "jammed" out by 1996. Newcleus' Jam on It (a full 12 years earlier in 1984) preceeded a slough of radio stations who beat that term into the ground.

Wow... i don't even know where that "shit hop" blah is coming from. Have you lot ever actually listened to any hiphop? Laydown ain't got nothing to do with rap music. It's a prime example of what Prince always was best in: Nasty, sticky FUNK. Just because he sings "rap style" in the song doesn't make it "hip hop" or anything. Or was Annie Christian a "shitty shiphop song", too? Damn, learn some stuff before you talk crap about it...

This discussion is classic .org: it's almost free of knowledge, totally overloaded with prejudice and completely ridiculous. Congrats.

It's always the same stupid blah.

"I think Laydown is a good track" is an opinion.

"I think Laydown is a shitty track" is an opinion.

"Laydown is a hiphop track" is not an opinion.

"I think Laydown is a hiphop track" isn't an opinion either.

Do you really fail to see the difference?

While the first two are opinions, the latter are not. So what are they? They could be called "statements". The difference is this: Opinions can not be "true" or "false". You might "like" them or not, you might agree or disagree, but you can never call somebody's opinion "false". Know why? Because an opinion doesn't state anything about an object (about the track Laydown e.g.) but about the speaker's attitude (exactly: opinion) towards it.

On the other hand, a "statement" is nothing to "like" or "dislike" (only in a much broader sense). It's either true or false - to keep it simple. Mixing those two concepts up is a common yet unnecessary mistake, here and in other places. You simply can't say things like "all humans are female" or "snow is green" or "elephants are smaller than ants" and justify yourself by saying "well, you might not like it but it's my opinion and opinions are like assholes everybody has one"... That's utter bullshit.

Sorry for me sounding wise ass, but maybe this helps.. peace.

There was no such thing as shit hop when "Annie Christian" was recorded. Shit hop didn't come along until the 1990s. Yes, there was rap in the 1980s but it wasn't shit hop. There's a difference in hip hop and shit hop. It became shit hop when it became stripped down, slow to midtempo, and with an ignorant thug attitude. In other words, when it became dull and stupid.

Thanks, Mavis Beacon, but I'm aware of what an opinion is and there's tons of them flying back and forth in this thread.

Oh, and the term that vainandy so wisely coined (shit hop) is an opinion in and of itself.

ANYWAY, people talking about "Laydown" being an hip hop song are incorrect. I don't know what "Dirty South" shit you guys are listening to, but "Laydown" would never be a hit single unless Lil Wayne or Nicki Minaj were guest rapping on it or something (and even then, only because of the duet). It's not a rap song.

Sticky like glue, Act of God and Lavaux are my fav's of the 20Ten album.

Lay it down is a song that doesn't fit on the album like the rest but...I love it a lot!!

It's been awhile since I heard Prince doing this: a strong beat, balls & fun!!

I know Vaiandy doesn't like shit hop but this is something else.

I also like funk, rock & pop

but...there also is good hip hop/rap : Outkast, Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, De La Soul,

Snoop Dogg (Doggystyle was filled with funk samples & grooves!).....

I know no one will convince U, just as I don't like regea music wink
